If you are going to work in Thailand you need Non B visa before you can apply for a work permit.
Also to get a Non B you will need paper work from the person that will working for.

So if you are coming to Thailand get a 3 month tourist visa this will help that you will have time to get a Non B with out leaving Thailand.

You need to leave Thailand to get a Non B as they will not issue or convert an existing visa in country.

Fondle you don't have to leave you need to have enough days on your visa left.
I know they say this every where you read that you have to leave Thailand to get a Non B.
You can do it we you flight into Thailand you get fill in your TM card 30 day T/V then you need all the paper work from the company or school that will employe you & to log this as long as you have more that 15 days left on your Tourist Visa.
There are may thing they say you can not do, A good Lawyer can do this for you as they know the Immigration Laws.
Many things they say but are not true.
You can not start a new job on your work permit. You can with the right paper work. ( 1 thing don't let any person or company to look after your work permit)
As if the Company that you work for are holding your work permit ask for it before you quit.
When you quit you have 14 day in which to return your work permit.( in this time you can get a transfer to a new Company if you have all the right paper work)
Also you can have more that 1 Company on your work permit.
As I worked for 2 companies at the same time.

PS If you would like my lawyers hone number PM me

Iam not basing my comment on heresy.

LOL @ company keeping work permit........... seems you must have been involved some dodgy ones as I hold the work permit that the HR dept here obtained on my behalf).

Good luck with converting a tourist visa to non b in country though.........

Fondles it is not converting a tourist visa, you need to have more that 15 day on what ever visa so you have the time.
Ask the Labor department about your work permit you are the only person is aloud to hold it as it is your work permit.

The only reason they keep your work permit as they think they own you.
I have been through this with a Thai company had my work permit & would not give it back when I quit my job.

I had to report it to the police that it was stolen & told then employer that I told the police that he had it.

He told me to come & pick it up my work permit straight away.

My Non B was legal obtained, you believe what you like Fondles OK mate

I'll believe what I have had first hand experience with.

Question, though if you can as you say easily convert a tourist visa to a non immigrant B visa (you need a non B for the work permit) in country why would one need to engage the services of a lawyer ?

Sucks that your employer held your work permit, I work for a reputable Thai company that trades internationally and worldwide have more than 8,000 employees of which more than 200 expats locally, they don't feel the need to "own you" by keeping your work permit.

In regards to my question about tourist visa to Non B I'll flick an email to the head of HR and ask why do they go to the expense of sending expats to Singapore for the Non B if it can be done easily in country (albeit with the use of a lawyer)............

Teflers have some loop hole or sort that works just as Rathaburi has described. But I believe this to be the case where employers who have a good relationship with immigration have an easier job of doing this. I have heard of it too many times.

But in all honesty I really dont know. I am on a permission to stay non immigrant O issued 21 years ago.

Fondles you can't convert T/V visa to NonB, but you have to have more than 15 day on a T/V
As in takes 15 day to get a Non B with out ging out side.
Would you like his phone number.
I only use him for the NonB only & it was not a back door job.
I Employed a friend 3 years ago, I had to send him to Sinapore for his NonB, as he had less than 15 days on his T/V

Teh fuck are you talking about, on one hand you say you cannot convert a tourist visa to non b in country (this is correct) but on the other claim if you have 15 days or more on your TV you can get a non B ???????

Which part of they do not issue non immigrant B visa in country do you not understand ?

Prove me wrong with an actual link to the immigration that says otherwise........ a number for your lawyer is nothing but a wank.

And why do you need a lawyer if it is possible to do so ?

Well technically you didnt but you keep saying you must have atleast 15 days left on your TV to get a non B........

The simple fact is they will not issue a Non Immigrant B in country........ you must leave the country to obtain this so what ever days you have remaining on your TV have zero relevance to the non B.

    Prove me wrong.

I did it. I was offered a job while I still had a 30 day visa-exempt stamp. I went to Penang for a tourist visa, went back to Bangkok and changed it for a non-imm B. Whole thing was absolutely straightforward. A number of my friends and colleagues have also done the same.

BTW, WPs are required by law to be kept at your place of work. It states this on the WP itself. Most companies don't insist but the law does require it.

    Whats the lawyer for ?

For what it is worth you can convert a tourist visa in country to a non immigrant O visa, just not a B visa..... you can however obtain a work permit on a non O.

But I digress to your superior knowledge, you have worked her for 4 years more than me so you must be correct..lets hope the OP's friend has the same lawyer as you............what is his function again ?

I always carried my work permit too, mostly so I could wave it at people when they tried the double-pricing routine on me. The fact is, though, that it is not yours - no more than your passport is yours. It belongs to the Thai Labour Ministry and that's why you have to give it back when you finish working in Thailand.

    What lawyer?

And yes, I worked in Thailand for 12 years with a non-imm B which I got in Bangkok based on my Tourist Visa from Penang. What's your problem with that? Are you yet another of those sad people unable to admit that they're wrong?

This is a forum for Expats and wannabe expats - information provided on here should be accurate. Many, many people have converted Tourist Visas into non-imm B and non-imm O visas in country. It's a standardised procedure, you must fulfill the standard requirements for any Non-Imm visa, have 21 days left on your tourist visa, and pay a B2,000 fee.
