Thread: To go, or not to go?

What to do. My missus has come up with the suggestion we go live in the UK with the kids. We have the money to buy a house there but that's it. Furnishing it will take time. She wants to do it for the sake of our children. She thinks they will have a better life being raised in the UK rather than here, educationally and socially. I don't know if they would?
I don't even know if she'll get a visa. She's been talking with her friends today, that live abroad, and they've done a good job in brainwashing her into thinking all is possible.
We have a nice house and car here and it would mean selling all. I'm almost sure that she'll get homesick, which would bring problems, and I'm a bit old in the tooth to be setting up a new house etc. If I agree to go to the UK and she doesn't like it I'm fcuked.
When I first came here I never had the kids and never thought of going home. But the children are priority. So what are your views as to my problem? Are things as bad as they say they are in the UK etc?

If they have passports (UK) and are studying English and getting a good education, I'd say they are better off here.

By the sound of it, you are quite content here.

I would be staying put if i was in your shoes, your kids still can have a good education in Thailand, but it costs.

You should really have thought about all this before having kids

Start explaining to your Missus about the cold weather, chocolate boys and price of Somtam

if i were in your situation i wouldn't buy or sell anything at this stage. i would try to be a bit...err...pragmatic.

why not rent a place in the UK for a year to see how it goes. you could also think about renting out your place here to help defray costs.

and by the way, yeah, the wife might not like living in the UK, but the kids might not like it either.

Do you have enough money for a good British education here? There are two very good British schools here and my daughters attend one. If your kids are bright and have dual citizenship scholarships are available.

I think dont go. You are so right 4 months of winter in the UK and that would be it.

Then funny thing is I am a Yank.

My kids are fine here with their education as I see it. I'm not worried myself on that score. It's just that we live in an area where outside of school events, for children, are few and far between. May be a suggestion of moving to a city here could get her to re-think?

maybe somewhere with more people would help!

I don't get the logic. To get my kids into a school that is of any quality I'd have to buy a house within the catchment area of that school. Obviously a quality school would be in an area where house prices are premium. Therefore I'd be at the limit of my finances.

Location, location, location. Check out schools, house costs and anything else you'd need to know before making a move. It could be a good move. It could be a nightmare.

but there is a great future in thailand, and other asian countries for western educated folk with the capacity to think for themselves, express their individuality and speak fluent english.

Lots of people rent somewhere for a year, and then move wherever they want when you have the school place. If you want to live whithin walking distance of the school, then that won't help obviously.

Make sure you move to a nice indigenous place in Britain , like parts of Yorkshire and avoid immigrant heavy shitholes like London , or their education will be terrible ,

The UK can be very expensive and cold for your wife! Education is free but that is a lottery

anyway, you could always rent when in the UK until you make any decision, furnished and all sorted

just keep your place in Thailand in case you change your mind

my own opinion is that Thailand education is good until secondary school age, then is not so good as the Uk unless you pay a lot (even then, maybe not)

You can educate them yourself. Most things learnt at High School like cos, tan etc are rarely used. Teach them how to save, invest and how to write and they are ahead of most. I can only remember about 40% of what I learnt at school and use very little of it.
