Teacher fined $10,000 for allowing victim to punch bully

    Tuesday May 14, 2013
A third-grade teacher in New York was fined $10,000 after making an eight-year-old bully stand in front of the class while one of his victims ‘‘hit him back for all the abuse’’, causing the bully to cry. Department of Education officials sought to fire the teacher but because of her previously clean teaching record she kept her job.

    In the short term, perhaps.

It that will do is teach the bully to more carefully select his/her victims.

I changed schools a lot as a kid. One thing I learnt to do when at a new school was find the bully, get on his radar early and smash the fcuker at the first opportunity. Made life so much simpler.

This cultural PC aversion to violence led by communist lesbian 3rd grade teachers is not natural and is going developing whole generations of sniveling repressed socially handicapped dependants..

Violence and aggression and the proper application thereof are essential human traits. Teaching kids to both cope with, and apply both is just as important a lesson as any other.

    Agree Necron.

New school, boy a few years up thought he could bully me. Punched in square in the nose. He fell over and cried. Teacher told me to stand in the corner and as my folks were away, my gran was called in who advised the teacher that her attention should be focused on the bully, and asked me if I connected as she had taught me. She bought me an icecream.

I can remeber exactly the same incident when I was at Kindy. A nasty boy who was younger than me but also bigger than me kicked me on the leg. The Kindy teacher held the boy and told me to kick him back. I kicked him on the leg but I only did it gently because I was scared he would batter me as soon as the teacher was out of sight.

if she had made them kiss and make up she would be risking a sexual assault charge - so a bit of fisticufts was probably the safer option

Only one way to deal with bullies, beat the crap out of them. If they are bigger than you then just baseball bat the fucks, anything that works really. I once waited two years to batter a bully, well worth it and he had the surprise of his life.

    Got that right.

Turning the other cheek would be that much more of an encouragement to the bully.

I used to get picked on a bit at my old comprehensive school. One day after reading a bit about the H-Block prisoners, I decided to strip naked and cover myself in my own shit to deter the bullies. This seemed to work a treat, and I've subsequently used this method a few times since to pro-actively counter any possible aggravation.

Well, the $10K fine is a bit steep.

Put her on admin leave or something 'till the whole thing blows over.

Watch the documentary Bully. The crap some people go through these days and teachers have no way to stop it. The world raises bullies. Even here on TD, the bullies rule and inspire more bullying.

    Some interesting views on this.

Not true - you can also run away or hide.

My mum tells a story of how I was getting bullied at primary school one time and one day I came home with a smile and told my mum that today I did not get hit by the bully.

She asked why and I told her 'because I hid behind the school bins!'

I do not fully recollect this incident and I have some reservations as to its veracity but even if it is true good on me for making the best of a bad situation.

yeah it's funny all these pc knobs say violence isn't the answer then engage in violent protests. Humans are naturally aggressive wars keep happening but a kid who was probably bullied for years can't punch a kid once? fuck off

I hope the parents chip in and pay the bill!!!!!!!

10 years after the kindy incident he spat at me in the bike shed. Not a personal grudge against me, he was just violent and generally provocative. I grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him to the ground and sat on him. Not being much of a fighter I was not sure what to do next so I told him to fucking watch it or something and then let him up. He then went berserk and gave me one of the worst kickings of my life.

But he had only spat at me. Trying to hit him so hard that I knock him out would seem like an over-reaction however my decision to confront him turned out not to be the best outcome for me.

And anyway my point is that this notion that 'the only way to deal with bullies... etc.' is not really true. Some bullies are complete psychos and the best way to deal with them is to avoid them, or ignore them or in extreme situations run away from them.

I was so proud of my daughter a while ago, when there were a group other kids playing in a park.

A boy similar of size and age, blasted her water from a with a hose, My 5 year old walked up to him in the playground and give him a decent kick (not in the nuts but I taught her later in, to kick were it hurts).
He learn't a valuable lesson, Asian girls aren't as placid as they seem.

As a former-fat-kid, I had quite a few schoolyard brawls. It didn't help that my friends were mostly the nerdy, intellectual guys. The thing was, I never took any crap. If someone approached me and started picking on me or my friends, then we'd have it out. The outcome was usually that we all became friends afterward.

I don't advocate violence as a means of communication. However, when there is a communication breakdown and you find yourself or your loved ones (friends in my case) being the victim of violence, it is not an arena where reasonable discussion will resolve things. If you cannot remove yourself from the situation, you have to stand strong.

I will continue to be an advocate for children standing up for themselves at school, even if it means there's a fist-fight or two. As far as a teacher making a kid stand in front of the room while his victim punches him - well, that's very questionable, even for me.
