I've met stupid people all over the world!! Although sometimes I feel this place has a higher demographic of them..
Seems so because the world is an ignorant place. Problem is probably none of those people see themselves as ignorant, they'd just see you as an asshole.

But I get your point. One bad decision after another is no way of life I'd ever want. But I doubt the unfortunate are on the edge of suicide. In fact they're most likely happy.

RickThai, you're not being very Buddhist right now, but nothing new there.

    falong

That's an innovative way to spell it. We ought to have a contest to see who can fuck that up more.

    phaalung?

MakMak, no offense bro but you've pulled off the rare redneck double whammy coming from Florida and Isaan. Props.
Even the most devout Buddhists discuss social problems and try to effect change (Ever hear of the Dalai Lama?)

Many transliterations do spell "falong" as "farang". I prefer falong as it is more phonetic. In two of my Thai-English dictionaries it is spelled "farung" not "farang".

All are transliterations and thus there is no 100% correct way of spelling the word in a different alphabet.

Another "prissy little Missy" post IMO.

I don't hate anything. I've listed social problems that I dislike about Thailand. Others are free to love the same things I dislike.

I've never met a teacher in the USA (my country of citizenship) who had to pay a principal of the school $200.00 US to get hired at the school. Quite common in Thailand. Try and slip cash to the average State Patrol Officer to get out of a ticket and you will probably wind up arrested.

    Still believe what you will.

Sure in some other countries things are much worse (South Africa, Zimbabwe, etc), but this is not a forum for those countries. It is a forum about Thailand.

Your ears work differently to mine then. I've never heard it sound any different to Farang or Falang at a push. The "ong" sound at the end is 100% wrong. I have no idea how you think you are hearing that.

However I add in the same breath; "I'd hate living in the US more, so I stay in Thailand." It's usually a conversation killer.

I have become more tolerant of "these people" after 8+ years in-country. Mostly that's because I realized where else in the world are you gonna find Thais as "thick as ticks on a hound-dogs back" except in a country called THAI-land?

Now granted teaching myself to speak, read, write and type Thai has helped my acclimation. But believe me, you ain't gonna get the secrets to the frickin' universe or the keys to the kingdom from these people, even if you speak Thai just fine. Most of these people are about as dimensional as one side of a piece of paper.

Face it, as far as pissant shit-hole "developing" third world countries go, this one ain't that bad, and you could certainly pick one that's worse without too much effort..

I think the thing I dislike the most is the outright racism these people exhibit toward "their own kind" (as in other Thais). It's based on mostly useless criteria like; skin tone, education levels, earning parity, job position, what province you were born in, etc. I think that's why I'm happy to be a born, bred, corn fed American here. I don't fit into any niche in Thai society so can interact with the Soi side somtam seller just as easily as I can with the CEO of a major Thai company.

I also dislike meeting foreigners who have a Thai (in)significant other and who feels the need to tell me; "I didn't meet her in a bar" as their opening conversation starter. Honestly, I don't care if she was a "cheap Sukhumvit street whore", she's your Thai, NOT mine! If you think you're happy, that's all that matters.

As a rule I tend to dislike these people (the Thais) and foreigners equally. I like to think of myself as an "equal opportunity discriminator", I don't discriminate based on race, creed or color, only on stupidity. Not surprisingly, I've found in my world travels stupidity has no boundaries and that no country has the market cornered on it either. I've met stupid people all over the world!! Although sometimes I feel this place has a higher demographic of them..

The average IQ of the people of Thailand is somewhere in the high 80s. Just slightly below that of most European (and the US) countries.

Actually that is one I forgot to include. The sois (and markets) can be unbelievably filthy! That's one thing I always liked about Germany and Switzerland. The streets and sidewalks were spotless!

Most Thais (that I know) keep really clean homes, it's just the public areas that are so dirty.

It's a "non intelligent" post, but the facts are irrefutable and you agree with it all. I'm not even going to try and get my head around that.

I know this is a highly predictable question from me, but I feel compelled to ask it none the less. I seem addicted to asking questions I know people don't have an answer for. It's something I'm working on.

Why Todd, if the place is as grim as you say it is, do you even think about living there? I get the whole "The USA is even worse" bit, but that's just two countries. Did your atlas have lots of pages missing or something?

You've got one life and you're going to spend it somewhere you despise, among people you despise even more. What a fucking waste!

Annoys me too - you tell 'em not interested and 10 minutes later they're
asking again and who would buy porn dvds in Thailand anyway? 50 baht motocy fare from Pantip and you're at Nana/Cowboy and as much real flesh as you can cope with.

Only slightly below Euros (90 < 110)? Generous of you.

How about slightly above borderline mental function (71 < 84) at 85 < 90 (dull)?

Just like you've got an IQ of 140, eh Rick. Actually, the latest figure for a national average is 98.6. That figure is pretty much the same as America and somewhat below most European nations though since IQ is a load of bollocks - America, with its history of eugenics and racial psychology, is somewhat unusual in still caring about it - this doesn't actually mean anything much at all.
