^ What people tell you and what they get, in reality, aren't necessary the same.
As for working hard on an oil rig. Give me strength. What have they got to compare it with if they've done it all their days? Go join the military. Work 18+ hours a day for months on end, no R&R for 6+ months. Eat shit food. Get shot at. Shit in a hole etc etc. Then come back and tell me life on a rig is hard work.
The next think someone will be telling me football is a mans game.

I have worked on boats for a while, when there was a transition period of computer design and satellite comms were not so good

6 or 8 weeks in some fairly comfortable vessel just gets tedious; after the first week there is little to talk about with most of the crew, most of the books you have read or are crap, the food is fair but also boring, esp if fresh produce has been delayed

when you get back onshore, there are green trees everywhere and life is good again

if you have a family it is more difficult, of course
    I have reported your post

my dad worked the rigs in the north sea while i was growing up. only got paid when he was working so he worked as much as he could. he did a year in the US too I think. Must have been hard for him and my mom, and probably why I'm such a girl now.

Exp is everything in that game imo. He works in Singapore with a house in Thailand now.

As is usual, the people getting the most are usually the people doing the softer jobs as well. There's a guy I know in Malaysia who is getting $3500 NET a day, working in an office in the towers, working 9-6 Monday to Friday and is clinging onto that gig for dear life. The Philippino's get paid a fortune compared to their average wage at home, but they are bringing the rates down. A 10 yr experienced Thai working in production operations for a service company will be usually have a base salary all the time (think 45k that kind of mark) and 90k baht when they are off shore. Over the next 10 years with the guys getting paid less gaining more experience, we will see a significant decrease in the big money boys as they become surplus to requirements.

The farangs on 1000 a day, pissing it all away when they not offshore in Pattaya, are in for a rude awakening I think.

I've been offered a couple of jobs over the year with varying rotations, KZ, NIG.....

But I work in an office in Bangkok and go home to the family every evening, I'm not giving that up even if it is to double my money.

Once I get kicked out here which isn't that far in the future, it may be different.

Frankly though, I think I'd rather return to the UK at this time.

35 days on- 35 days off, food OK, air miles build up quick flying exec, no taxes on income, 1400US a day when working in office on site ( not offshore), therefore put some away for retirement. Not a bad gig for the last 12 years.

There are a lot of my friends rotation-working on oil / gas assets in places like Iraq, Nigeria, Libya, Algeria, etc. These guys get paid mega-bucks due to the dangerous, unstable environment and countries they are in.
Conversely, lot of guys working in places like Saudi and the Middle East say that the money they are getting isn't all that good these days. Ditto offshore oil platforms, depending on the experience and skills of the staff.

    A tax-free US$49,000 every 70 days makes it easier I'm sure.

A mate of mine was earning around US$130,000.00 clear in his Hong Kong bank account for a 3 month stint and he was put up in a hotel overlooking the Casino in Melbourne.

As someone above rightly said the administration people seem to be getting far more return for their work then the people out on the rigs.

I also know some lads who are on similar money doing seismic work in Northern Africa and they question whether the money is worth the dangers they have to confront almost daily.

I wouldn't think so, the stress alone must be horrendous.

Money is nice but I'm not sure I could ever be paid enough to go through certain things.

In north Iraq quite a few firms have removed the Ultra Harsh Posting rating from people based there.... the reason being a queue of people waiting to go there from the African pits.

They in reality feel pretty safe as the private security firms pick the eyes out of the government funded special forces army staff and to employ them to take care of these guys.

    Interesting thread L/T.

Some of the boys are making massive money and it would be nice to see what they do with that money?

Big houses, Flash Cars, A harem of top dolly birds maybe.

    Spill the beans then.

Most of lads I know (Brits, Aussies) have happily made Thailand their home and yes have purchased nice homes and their families are well taken care of.

The blokes without families do live the high life though and certainly let their hair down after a long stint on the rigs. You can hardly blame them and it is great for the Thai economy.

I now understand a bit more concerning punters buying huge homes in Thailand without any real security over them compared to the West.

When one is earning such large incomes it dont really matter if things don't pan out on a relationship level and one does there dough.

Not an issue really. The guys on the rigs are earning there big money, I say well done to them and I'm sure there enjoying the fruits of there labour.

You have hit the nail on the head Terry.

The oil and gas boys, especially those with long contracts can make enough money in a month tp pay cash for a car or over 5 months pay the progress money to build a very nice home.

Hardly a financial hardship for these boys and if their marriage goes west.

You know L/T, I always thought a punter was insane to by a house in Thailand considering the potential risk involved but I now totally understand why these guys with the readies do it.

Jesus, if I was earning that sort of money I would buy a massive fok off gaff and a fleet of Maybach's to cart all my girlfriends around.

Anyway, I'm not earning that sort of money so that's me foked innit.

Love Teakdoor as I learn something new everytime I log on.

Right I'm going to raise the point. And it's all about 'when the cats away, the mice will play'. Fcuk the money side of it.
I see wives/girlfriend of people that work away and, in the majority of cases the mice are having a nice time. A woman has her needs and being as she's now a lady of leisure she gets bored with the cat being away and seeks attention. I'm sure you get my drift. For me i wouldn't trust a Thai woman as far as I could throw her. So, do shift workers trust their partners?

    Nasty lol

It would not be uncommon for a Thai lady to have two sponsors working the rigs hoping their schedules do not change.

2 mates work in Saudi, oil/gas engineering office. 12 hour days, Sunday off. Make approx. $au 25000/month tax free. 2 weeks off every 3 months, return plane ticket anywhere in the world.
I declined the offer to join them, family would go off the rails if the bull elephant
    is not around.
Each to their own as they say.
