If I were living & working in Bk, I would wear something appropriate for someone living and working there. As a 'suit', it would not be appropriate for me to be seen hanging around in seedy tourist venues wearing the obligatory Singha vest, baggy shorts & sandals- except perhaps in my immediate local neighborhood.
When I visit Bk, my time there is a little schizoid. When I'm out with ex-business mates still working there, I dress neat casual and go to 'nice' places. But when I'm just hanging out, or with other visitors, I dress down like the typical tourist slob that I am. So two different Bangkoks really.
Cargo pants, T-shirt, trainers.
Job done.
What's up with this general popularity of cargo-style pants/shorts?
Quite unseemly and gauche, as well as being a little heavy for comfort.
A lot will depend on your background and where you grew up / live...
Us colonial lads will always tend to go for what we are most comfortable in, whilst giving at least a nod towards what is deemed acceptable. Hence in my case, lightweight clothing.
Not big on cargo pants myself as they are not that breathable.
What ever makes me feel good at the time ( its not woman cloth like Socal)
Reminds me of a piece of fashion advice I received competely unsolicited from about a 12 year old girl at a wedding.
A daughter of a friend or relative of the happy couple I suppose, who told me that shoes and belt should match and I was making a big mistake with brown belt and black shoes.
To this day I make sure the belt and shoes match.

Shirt (with proper sleeves and buttons) and trousers. I never go out in shorts and I don't own any polo shirts or (God forbid) short-sleeved shirts.
Any Farang expat sterotypes here?
I'm somewhat of an old fart and have the belief (however misguided) that I am a ambassador/representative of my homeland so I attempt to dress appropriately when out and about.
In general when in BKK: docker shorts, Hawaiian shirt, dress sandles.
When visiting the FIL in BKK or when going out in the evening with the spouse to a nice restaurant or event : docker style slacks, Hawaiian shirt, dress sandles.
Around the SEA Traveler Villa: boxer shorts or Thai massage pants without a shirt
Out and about outside the SEA Traveler Villa compound: shorts and T shirt or Hawaiian shirt.
Appropriate attire when golfing, swimming, or bicycling...
