Try to take your pics before sundown (or sun up) when the sky is still lit.

I don't know what kind of camera you have but here's my settings for shooting the moon:

    Aperture at f/11
ISO 100 (you don’t want any noise on your photo and it’s so bright there is really no need to go above 100)
    1/125 – 1/250

Before sunset it's nice to do:

    This one was

    1/500
    f/5.0
    200 mm lens
    ISO 400

I signed up for the notification, but not a single pass over Chiang Mai yet. Any steely-eyed-missile-men out there that can tell how often the space station passes a particular place?

edit... Weird. As I post this, I get an email notification....

It passes over you all the time. But usually you cannot see it. It can be during the daylight hours then it is not bright enough to be seen. Or it is in the night and it is not lit by the sun and again cannot be seen. You can see it only when it is dark at your location but the ISS is in the sunlight. This application gives you only the passes you can actually see.

I am still waiting for a notification. But I will probably need many notifications because usually it will be obscured by clouds as happened so many times in the past.

Yeah, I know all that, but it still doesn't help us know what the frequency of sightings is. At any rate, clear in CM this AM so will take my coffee outside to give it a look. Haven't seen it for about seven years when it was quite a bit smaller.

EDIT: Success! Thanks again Big Fella.

There is a heated discussion among space geeks about that. Some, like me, are of the opinion it is worthless as a base for the next jump and of some limited interest for science. There is probably some water on the moon, so you potentially could produce LH and LOX (liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen) for fuel. But liquid hydrogen is very hard to handle and even harder to store. IMO probably not suitable as fuel for long term exploration flights.

Others are of the opinion that it is a worthwhile step on the way out. Many simply want the moon again to see ANYTHING happen.

No, it is not, there is He3. You can potentially use it for a variant of nuclear fusion that produces no radioactive waste at all. The kind of fusion presently researched on earth will produce some mildly radioactive waste with short half life. But fusion with He3 is even much harder to achieve than fusion with hydrogen, which we cannot do yet.

    M'Kay,

What is the therory I am thinking of? What is it... the Morris law?

For every year today... our computing power jumps ten years...

You wanna know why it is slow? Because someone won't make money on their patents.

I don't get what you mean. You think fusion is solved but the process suppressed?

The most likely scenario for a Mars trip would be ~6 month flying there. Then over a year on Mars, waiting for the return window. Then ~6 month back.

There is another scenario. I am not sure but 9 month sound right. But that would be going 9 month to Mars, staying only a month or so there and 9 months back. It is not that much shorter over all but only a short time on Mars and very long time in weightlessness with the resulting health hazards. That is why the other scenario is the favorite.

They linked to this site that has a nifty little sign up so you can get an email or SMS when it is due to pass over where you are. I can't wait to get my first glimpse
    The link is here

    NASA - Spot The Station

iPhone app - various astronomy app will show you augmented reality view of the sky. Just hold it up, and it shows you the night sky, which everything labeled. Including the space station.

Got three notifications over the past two days and we saw the pass you post here. It was a cool one as when it got overhead it was as if the lights were turned off as it went into the shadow of the earth. I was wondering why the notification said a south disappearance.

Got a lot of notifications but like always the sky was cloudy. Presently clear skies but no passes.
