    Thai Dog Owners

Thai wife grew up with dogs and we got one last year. Figured she would know how to take care of it and I would do nothing because I've never owned a dog or grew up around them. The only thing she did was housebreak the dog. Aside from housebreaking, I had to train the dog to sit, stay, roll over, etc. Said that is stuff farang dogs do, Thai dogs don't do that.

Do Thais in general train their dogs? Was she just fobbing the dog training off on me or do Thais genuinely not train their dogs?

Unless it's a tiny dog, Thais generally seem to let their dogs stray farther from home as they age until they become semi-street dogs and stop feeding them or caring for them medically- training doesn't seem to be a priority.

    There are exceptions, of course.

A kick to the head, now and again, is about all.

Do Thais teach table manners to their kids ? Obvious reply expected. So why would they train their dogs.

All the dogs in northern Thailand seem to be fully well trained to shit all over the streets.
Personally, I thought the trade in exporting street dogs to Vietnam for pooch a la roast, was a bloody fine initiative.

Thai dogs are smarter than their owners, hence they never get trained. I've always said that dogs shouldn't be allowed to have Thais.

Nearly everyone in our street has a dog or 2 and they let them wander about a bit. One liked to come in our garden, but I have now trained him by slamming the gate on him.

My wife has three semi soi dogs. She trained them and has vet cards and shots on each one. She lets them run with the pack of soi dogs on our street, about 20 of them. They almost all sleep in my driveway every night. I never lock my garage or even close the door. I never worry about our vehicle. Only problem we have ever had is when someone new comes to visit - we must go out to the driveway so they can get in safely.

Geese are better for these applications....
And they don't need to be trained.

Once they establish their domain - they stay put. Yet independent to their being.

Peacocks are used as well...but like Geese they to would be found edible or preferred over that of the local canine. Thai's do have good taste...therefore no animal feels safe in the arms of its Thai owner.

round here no thai trains there dogs, every house seems to have 2 or 3 of the snappy bastards,
but they all seem to have more road sense than your average thai motorcycle rider,
they wait for the vehicle to pass before moving across the road.

    Too funny, and so true.

I once saw a dog on the telly that could count and I have a university educated Autocad assistant here that used a calculator to subtract 9 from 280 the other day.

Our house is right next door MIL house. She feeds dogs when we are away. One time I accidently left two main doors unlocked for two weeks while away. I also left a few thousand baht laying on the table. We left in a hurry because of a medical emergency in the family a ways away. So I assume that when I am away all is well. My money was still on the table when I returned.

I have always had dogs since I was a kid. trained many. I have never understood why you would trian a dog to roll over ?
Sit, stay fetch, attack yes but roll the fuck over ?
I have several Soi dogs that were left over from the house build. Managed to get it down to 3. They bark if anyone comes to the end of the driveway. Like a good doorbell.
One of the younger ones had some pups which are sadly still here. Now I'm surrounded by jungle yet the dirty little bastards shit all over the driveway.
Till these pups arrived I never saw a piece of dog shit ever.
They are going to have to go I'm afraid. Just finding a painless way if possible is the problem !
If not it may be time the wife took up clay pigeon shooting
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

All of the farmers I knew in yorkshire kept geese as farm yard guard 'dogs', noisy, aggressive and absolutely no sense of fear; from time to time they would happily go out and take on a lorry or car on the main road and end up as dinner.

My wife's family in Phetchabun had a cattle dog that was a good herder. The cows were scared of it, so he was good to have around in the fields. Strange about Brahmas, the cows are stroppy and the bulls are friendly. Anyway, very smart dog, so he might not have needed much training. Real badass, too, like some Thai dogs can be, and not overly friendly, but protective.

Bangkok people don't train their dogs properly, and do seem to more or less cut them loose.

Thais train dogs with big sticks. They throw big sticks at other people's dogs and beat the shit out of their own dogs with them.
