Olympic boring bast#$s just me ?

I had a mate over for a few beers yesterday afternoon. We sat getting pissed and dipping in the pool whilst the wives ate Issan food and talked. He then said he had to go as he was wanting to watch something on TV at the Olympics. When I said I hadn't watched a single event or had any inkling to do so in the near future he was amazed. he said I must be a right boring bastard for not wanting to watch any of it.
Am I the only one that has no interest at all in the games ? I think that the only thing I would watch would the beach volleyball and it would only be for the totty and not the sport. I think I would rather watch paint dry or the Thai soap operas the missus watches
When does it all finish by the way ?
Ho Hum, must be time for a beer
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

^ You are not alone. I havn't seen any of it either except about 5 minutes of the Thai girl playing badminton. My excuse is that I never watch television at all unless there's a decent film on which is pretty rare. The TV is for Ms Bangyai whilst I tend to be on the computer or reading.

Same here, except for DVD movies and the occasional TV series on disc. I have a 62" TV in the bedroom, but have never used the TV part of it in three years. That said, I got stuck in a bar two days ago for about 90 minutes waiting for my wife, and they had an 80" TV with the Olympics on. Quite interesting. I wouldn't go out of my way, and it's not even on cable here (you have to do a pay-to-view thing), but some of the events were pretty cool. I can see how people could get hooked.

I think it's boring also. Perhaps I'm getting older. I used to enjoy watching the competitions more.

Also, there is a lot of hype and hoopla over the Olympics today. Moreso than when I was younger, IMO.

Marketing, $$$$, PR campaign, celebrities, etc.

I still respect the athletes and like watching competitions, but I do not go out of my way to see the anymore.

    No, not alone Big Fella.
I haven't seen any of it, and have no intention of doing so.

I recommend you download Grumpy Old Men and watch that instead of the Olympics.

I live on Samui, drink fine wines and mainly deal with tourists so have no idea of the culture you hint at.
Just because I don't feel the need to watch overpaid, overindulged wankers running, jumping or pretty much anything else against other people doesn't make me sad.
Go and play in the kiddies section if you must !
It seems that it is you here that is the sad wanker !

What makes you sad is coming on here feeling the need to whine about it. Get behind your country FFS

BTW, they are all Amateurs, well most of them and none get paid for taking part in the Olympics, apart from endorsements and sponsorships I guess

    Anyway enjoy your Thai soaps

Have not watched any of the last five Olympics except for news reports.

As boring as watching any sport.

Playing sport is healthy and fun. Watching it is a waste of time.

Get behind your country? Bollocks. BILLIONS of OUR money is being spent on this obscene indulgence which mainly lines the pocket of big business sponsors and corporate wankers.

In a time of austerity when genuinely disabled people are being kicked off the sick, nurses pay is being cut 5%, police and military are being cut back etc etc etc it's a fucking extravaganza of a piss take. Same goes for the Jubilee, the Royal Wedding and all the other shite this year we're supposed to get all dewy eyed and patriotic about.

Fuck the Olympics and the horse it rode in on. From the building of the stadiums which employed legions of foreigners to the bans on local businesses trying to make a buck from the passing parade the local people haven't seen the slightest benefit from it. Support my country? I am, by boycotting the whole fucking shambles and its sponsors.

You carry on waving your poxy little plastic flag mate, I'll have no part of it.

^^ that's called social issues/problems. It is not the Olympics per se. I can understand your point, and agree with some of it, but one must take care to delineate social issues, from corruption, from sport, from ideals and icons, etc. They do move and merge, in part, but they are not the same thing...

So Khmen, is it just this Olympics being held in London, or do you still boycott when it's Beijing, Greece, or Brazil footing the bill ?

^^ I understand what you're saying but the fact remains that the country is deeply in the shit and something like this is a totally uneccesary waste of money which could be put to much better use.

^I don't give a shit if some Johnny Foreigners want to waste their money on hosting the Olympics, it's not my tax money they'd be wasting. They're not during these times of austerity, we are.

There are foodbanks being set up in every main town and city across the nation to feed families who can't afford to put food on the table at the minute - I saw a news article the other day where in the Athletes village they have 24/7 access to high quality freshly cooked food, cuisine from all around the world, to fuel their ever so important running about for no real reason.

Your money has been spent on it, whether you like it or not Khmen.
This event on home soil will be the best medal haul Team GB will have in a long time.
I agree with all you say about the huge cost, but it's done mate, all you are doing is cutting your nose off to spite your face.

We are not the only Nation to splash out

The New York Times reported that the 1992 Barcelona Games left Spain with a $6.1 billion debt. Athens estimated that the 2004 Games would cost $1.6 billion, but in the end it was $16 billion. It took Montreal nearly 30 years to pay off the $2.7 billion it owed after the 1976 Summer Games. And Britain is more than $10 billion over its original bid.

Again, though, that back-end payoff could be huge. Tony Travers, the director of the Greater London Group at the London School of Economics, who has studied the effects of the Olympics on the city, told The Times that “The advertisement for British planning, architecture, design, project management and building is extraordinarily good. This will undoubtedly send a message that Britain is good at delivering big projects on time.”
