    Retiring In Bangkok

Bangkok has great medical facilities like Bumrangrad Hospital. Been there a few times and always impressed. Lots to do in the city and one could easily fly off to many places of interest.

If one were to retire in Thailand as a single person, where would you live though to be away from the hustle but still get to Sukhumvit quickly?

I’m not great on what’s where is Bangkok, but I have a friend who lives out Soi Muban Panya in a relatively uncrowded area. It was fairly easy to get to his place in and out of the Thonglor area when I visited last year. Still, lots of traffic down there in Bangkok!

And, sorry, I must inquire…you are single now?

Probably Suphan Buri, great area, great people, great food, quiet way of life but not too countryside and with good access to Bangkok. Access to the mountains and many temples.. Cheap

Was in the opposite position, after living in Bkk for 10 years it was time to retire somewhere else. Researched and went to stay in Rayong, Sattahip, Pak Chong, and decided on Chiang Mai. After 5 years bought a place in Phuket and ended up not leaving.

Unless needing regular medical work I wouldn't base one's golden years on being near a hospital. When it's your time it's your time. Live out yer life in someplace nice.

If in the city i would look at Sammakorn (Ram 112) or Bang Na somewhere, or if on Suk Punnawithi areas. Plenty to do, eat, see. no need of a car, public transport access and medical facilities etc.

personally, outside i'd choose Chiang Rai, but a mate of mine is enjoying the slow life in Khanom which is very nice too.

Kanchanburi is nice, but hot as balls

    Congrats on your retirement. :-)
Tomcat is retired and living in BKK, so it works for him. AO also lives in BKK and is semi-retired(?) but I think his wife still works full time. Different strokes for diff folks.

That said, if I were to retire in TH (hypothetical, since I wouldn't do so) I'd choose Chiang Mai (among the places that I've visited). It's near mountains (good for hikes & nature trips), has a city & airport nearby. I can understand why Misskit & Harry chose to retire there.

To the OP: I hope you find what you're looking for.

I don't think he's looking for somewhere with poorer air quality than Bangkok

BKK is London compared to CMs Manchester. A wannabe compared to the real thing.

True, though he prefers only seeing vegetation and the colour green on a plate in a mall.

So Hua Hin is Eastbourne, to extend that utterly pointless claim.

    Both correct.

The number of backpackers and westerners coming through for the bridge and history etc means a lot western amenities - restaurants, book shops etc for a medium sized town.

Used to go on motorbike rides there a few times a year when based in BKK. The hot season is absolutely brutal there, but it includes the sugar cane harvest and they burn lots of shiz, so the air is around 97% ash. Nice place outside of those seasons though.

A poster built a little house there. SBF, slimboyfat.

...right on both counts. As long as the OP is living near a BTS or an MRT station, getting around bkk (and going to Bumrungrad) is relatively easy (the hospital has luxury courtesy vans that shuttle to and fro from Chidlom BTS station). The MRT stations closer to Cambodia (e.g., Minburi) offer many quiet neighborhoods...

Asking for a friend that needs to get a life as he is getting to the age where medical needs are coming up.

I wouldn't recommend Chiang Mai after living there for 9 years unless one can escape the smoke as it is horrible for 2-3 months. Medical care there is indeed very good, but you need to escape the smoke. For older folks, that can be a challenge. I have heard Huahin is a great place to live but don't anything about hospitals there.

Bangkok might not be a good choice in thinking about it. I have never experienced bad smog there but I guess it does happen.

Hua Hin is indeed a good place to live. The air is mostly clean, especially near the beach and it is usually a few degrees cooler than BKK et al. Local restaurants are plentiful, especially to the north of the centre, and western food is widely available in the tourist areas in the town centre, the hinterland and to the south. There is a very good government hospital there and a branch of Bangkok Hospital, which without insurance is wallet destroyingly expensive, there is one other hospital, San Paolo, but I dont know anything about it.

Off season there are very few tourists, but it gets crowded December to Feb. with westerners, especially families. Not so many bobbleheads or chinese thankfully.

Easy 2 to 3 hour access to BKK by road and the new high speed train is supposed to start operation shortly.

Your friend, does he have any other stipulations aside from not wanting to die in a rescue pick up on the way to A&E?

Honestly Thailazer, It will really depend on budget and what conveniences you are looking for. I have lived in PinkLao, Bang Na, Pathum Wan and Pathun Thani. Each had its own upside/downside. I think of the 4, I preferred PinkLao with Pathum Wan a close 2nd.

If you are going to move here light, then I recommend staying at condo's on short term leases. Check the areas out you may like. If not what you want, pack up the suitcases and go.

I lived in Sukhumvit Soi 11 and Soi 19. Both were perfect for me at the time. Feck living further out and needing to brave the traffic.

Does he need white company, western restos, does he play, is this his last booking, how far from a BTS or MRT station, what price band, how many bedrooms, does he like PM 2.5 and 10, any hospital preference .... there's a lot to consider.....

I lived on Sukhumvit 77 for a year or two.

    On Nut BTS nearby.

Far away enough from the madding crowds...but not too far.

    Loved it.
