A SpaceX rocket is on collision course with the moon after hurtling through space for seven years.
The booster launched in Florida in February 2015 as part of a mission to send space weather satellite on a long-range mission.
The spent Falcon 9 rocket stage is on course to hit the Moon in March.
The rocket’s second stage was high enough that it did not have enough fuel to return to Earth's atmosphere.
It also lacked the energy to escape the gravity of the Earth-Moon system, so it has been following a chaotic orbit since February 2015 and experts have now revealed it is on a collision course with the moon.
Space object tracker Bill Gray has said he believes the four-tonne object will strike the far side of the moon, near its equator, on March 4.
It is expected to impact the Moon at a velocity of about 2.58 km/s - over 3,500 mph.
The details are unclear and there will be slight alterations to its orbit. Mr Gray wrote: “These unpredictable effects are very small.” He said the precise time and location of the impact could change.

Four-tonne Space X Falcon 9 rocket on course to hit the Moon 'in March' - LBC

    https://twitter.com/SciGuySpace/stat...-asfLUV6SWxEqg

It turns out that a rocket on course to strike the Moon in March is NOT a Falcon 9 second stage. Astronomers now believe it is highly probable that the impact object comes from a Chinese rocket launched in 2014.

Exciting news on manned private space flight.

Remember Jared Isaacman and his Inspiration 4 flight with Dragon?

He has now contracted 3 more flights with SpaceX. Two more flights with Dragon. The third flight will be the first flight of Starship with people on board.

    Polaris Dawn

It sounds like SpaceX is building up their own astronaut corps. 2 of the 4 people on the first flight late this year, Polaris Dawn, will be SpaceX mission specialists, Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon. They will do EVA activities using SpaceX space suits, an improved version of the on board suits used by NASA on flights to the ISS. This version will be tethered to Dragon and receive life support. Later there will be further improvements and independent life support.

    Space News thread-polaris-1-jpg

For broadband communication this Dragon will connect with Starlink sats through a laser link. We can expect high quality coverage.

See also a video by Everyday astronaut, an interview with Jared Isaacman.

Remember this graphic from an early Starship render?

    Space News thread-violinist-jpg

Sarah Gillis could be this person. She comes from a family of artists and was raised from an early age to be a violinist. But when in University, she was talked into studying aerospace instead and became mission specialist at SpaceX.

Thai students win international award for space technology

A group of engineering students from Thailand’s has won an international award in Japan for their space technology project, which aims to develop a special drug to protect human DNA from cosmic rays.

Their space project was called “MINERVA CubeSat for demonstrating DNA damage mitigation against space radiation in C. elegans by using genetic modification”.

Their objective was to put small living animals in the MINERVA CubeSat, travelling to low earth orbit, and to observe how C. elegans (Caenorhabditis elegans) with Dsup Protein (Damage Suppressor Protein) can stand against space radiation.

Sumeth Klomchitcharoen, a doctorate student in Biomedical Engineering explains that CubeSat is suitable to release them in low earth orbit. While living roundworms like C. elegans are very small and 83% of their chromosomes are similar to humans, they could easily add Dsup Protein through genetic modification.

Pisitchai Tachavises, a bachelor degree student in Biomedical Engineering, further explained that “MINERVA” consists of six aluminium cubes, 30cm in height, 20cm in length and 10-12kg in weight. C. elegans are about 1mm long. Their method was to add Dsup to them through genetic modification. The special protein Dsup is from “Water Bears” or Tardigrade, which scientists found are the world’s strongest and most durable animal in any temperature or radiation environment.

If the trial with C. elegans is successful, the next test will be in humans.

The project won the award at the 7th Mission Idea Contest, in Tokyo, Japan, which was held by UNISEC-Global, an international non-profit body for space science and innovation for peace.

OneWeb: Russian ultimatum over UK satellite launch - BBC News

Oops - Oneweb satellite cluster launch by the Ruskies looks to be at extreme risk of being aborted, and they won't return any monies...

I have to question why the Brits are using Ruskies to launch satellites which by OneWeb's own admission, will carry security and surveillance capabilities.

These launches were purchased and paid for by One Web founder Greg Wyler before One Web turned bankrupt and was bought by GB and an Indian company. Buying One Web was plain idiocy by the GB government. The UK space agency warned about the purchase but was not heard.

Roskosmos said they will launch the satellites, if GB sells their stake and guarantee the sats will not be used for military purposes.

Given that one of their main purposes is GPS, the Russians can interpret that as having military uses no matter what.

But given that Russia's orders for satellite launches have all but dried up, Europe and China will be picking up the business instead. The UK will just write this off.

That's part of the bullshit. One Web sats are not capable of providing a GPS replacement. Even though this was given as a reason for the UK to buy into One Web despite warnings of the UK space agency.

Of course the UK cabinet member arranging the purchase being of Indian descent while the other half was purchased by an Indian company surely are two non related facts.

While it isn't GNSS capable, that doesn't mean it won't be. There are both benefits and drawbacks to using LEO satellites for this purpose, and now they have a platform on which to develop and test.

As of for the purchase, so a cabinet member of Indian descent managed to get an Indian company to share half the costs: Is that a bad thing or have you just got a beef with the jinglies?

I mean they picked up a company that had invested billions and run out of cash for a relatively small amount of money. They will probably get it back out of broadband profits.

I mean SpaceX expect about a $20 billion ROI on Starlink by 2025.

It's a peanuts investment for the UK to be honest and will almost certainly pay for itself.

Fuck them. Their bit of it is shit anyway.

Just tell them fuck off, Putin isn't interested in space anyway unless he can personally gain from it or use it to invade sovereign countries.

The british space agency does not share that view. They strongly advised against the purchase.

Sure, a major upgrade to the satellites could in theory provide a very basic GPS replacement. None of the presently launched and built satellites do. It is like sure cabbage tastes quite good if you filter it through a pig first.

Western sanctions could cause International space station to crash: Russia

Russia has been a target of several western sanctions after it invaded Ukraine. Amid all the chaos, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos has warned that all these sanctions could crash the International Space Station.

As per Dmitry Rogozin, the sanctions could disrupt the operation of ISS. The Roscosmos chief on Telegram wrote that the Russian segment of the station could be affected. This segment helps correct its orbit. If affected, it can cause the 500-tonne structure to "fall down into the sea or onto land."

The Russian segment ensures that the station's orbit is corrected (on average 11 times a year), including to avoid space debris", said Rogozin.

He further published a map of the locations where the ISS could possibly come down. It was unlikely to be in Russia.

"But the populations of other countries, especially those led by the 'dogs of war', should think about the price of the sanctions against Roscosmos", he continued.

The countries that imposed sanctions were deemed "crazy" by him.

Meanwhile, as more and more companies pull out from Russia over its war on Ukraine, Kremlin is reportedly easing its copyright laws and allowing domestic companies to steal intellectual property from “unfriendly nations."

Earlier this week, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development proposed relaxing piracy legislation to undermine sanctions imposed by the Western countries.

“The possibility of lifting restrictions on the use of intellectual property contained in certain goods, the supply of which to Russia is limited, is being considered,” the ministry said in a statement.

“This will smooth out the impact on the market of breaks in supply chains, as well as the shortage of goods and services that arose due to new sanctions by Western countries.”

It is a toothless threat by Rogozin. Roskosmos may or may not be able to maintain their own section of the ISS by themselves if they separate it. NASA however is able to maintain the US/Japanese/European part of the ISS. It would take some effort but is possible. Using a Cygnus supply vessel with larger propellant tanks.

Elon Musk has declared, SpaceX can do it. But I am sure, they will want to be paid. So it depends on NASA and Congress having the will to maintain the ISS operational.

Rogozin has also indicated that they may abandon Mark Vande Hei in orbit and have the Soyuz capsule that was supposed to take him down leave without him. Then he declared it was only a joke. But NASA would be able to get him down using a Dragon spacecraft on a private mission to the ISS that is planned for end of this month.

Edit: I am all in favor to kick Rogozins ass and get Mark down without Soyuz.

NASA’s Giant Moon Rocket Reaches the Launchpad for the First Time

NASA’s giant new moon rocket is finally at the launchpad, although it is yet to be determined when it might finally leave Earth.

For the first time on Thursday evening, a fully stacked Space Launch System rocket and its accompanying launch tower emerged from the Vehicle Assembly Building — essentially a huge garage for rockets — at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket, with an Orion capsule on top where astronauts will one day sit, was slowly carried on top of a giant crawler to the launch site more than four miles away.

“Rolling out of the V.A.B., that’s really an iconic moment for this vehicle,” Tom Whitmeyer, deputy associate administrator for exploration systems development at NASA headquarters, said during a news conference on Monday. “To be here for a new generation of a super heavy-lift, exploration-class vehicle, Thursday is going to be a day to remember.”

The journey took close to 12 hours. NASA announced at about 5:30 a.m. on Friday that the rocket had reached its destination.

Thursday and Friday’s scene was reminiscent of the Apollo era of NASA half a century ago when the Saturn 5 rockets used for moon landings made similar journeys to the launchpad. The crawler used on Thursday was the same one that transported the Saturn 5s, albeit refurbished and modernized for Artemis, the new NASA program to return astronauts to the lunar surface one day.

The rocket will sit for the next two weeks as engineers check out various systems on the rocket and launchpad, which is known as Launch Complex 39B. If all goes well, the tests will culminate with a countdown in early April with hundreds of thousands of gallons of cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen flowing into the propellant tanks.

But the engines will not ignite, and the rocket will not leave the ground. This will be what NASA calls a “wet dress rehearsal” — wet because it includes the filling of the liquid propellants — and will be the last major run-through before a launch can occur. The countdown will stop with about 10 seconds left, without the engines igniting.

After the wet dress rehearsal, the rocket will make the return trip to the Vehicle Assembly Building.

The next time that the rocket emerges, it will be for launch. NASA officials say they want to see how the rehearsal goes before they decide when that might be — perhaps as early as this summer.

The first mission will not have any astronauts aboard. The crewless test flight, known as Artemis 1, will first loop around Earth before its second-stage engine pushes it out of low-Earth orbit toward the moon. The Orion capsule will then separate from the second stage and, a few days later, enter orbit around the moon.

The mission, lasting about three weeks, will end with Orion splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

Both the Space Launch System and the Orion capsule are years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget.

In 2024, NASA has scheduled Artemis 2, a mission to send astronauts flying around the moon and back for the first time since 1972. Then another crew of astronauts are to land on the moon with Artemis 3, a mission that NASA has scheduled for 2025, although that timeline could again be delayed.

The moon landing mission will require the use of a separate landing craft, the giant Starship rocket built by SpaceX. Starship may also make its first test flight to space this year.

China's rover makes surprising water discovery at Mars landing site

China's Zhurong rover has found evidence suggesting that water persisted on Mars for much longer than expected.

Zhurong landed in a large plain in Mars' northern hemisphere called Utopia Planitia on May 15, 2021 -- where NASA's Viking 2 lander touched down in 1976.

The rover's primary mission, which lasted for three months, was to search for signs of ancient life. It has investigated the minerals, environment and distribution of water and ice in the plain, which is all part of the largest impact basin in the Martian northern lowlands. The rover continues to explore its landing site and send information back to the Tianwen-1 orbiter circling the planet.

Data returned from the rover's initial survey of the basin suggests that the Utopia Planitia basin contained water during a time when many scientists believed Mars to be dry and cold.

A study detailing the findings published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.

    Thanks for your concern.

More or less. I had spine surgery almost 2 months back. Still a lot of pain and severe limitations of what I can do. But getting better.

Some points I would like to share, but not with pointers to the source this time.

When Bill Nelson was appointed NASA administrator there was a lot of concern for SpaceX. He was always a proponent of the Old Space approach. Big supporter of Boeing, Lockheed Martin ....

So some of his remarks in a recent speech came as a major surprise.

He said Cost+ contracting is a plague. A position of Elon Musk for many years, he favors Firm Fixed Price contracts. Fought by Old Space with lobbying. They make a lot of money with Cost+. The longer and slower they work on contracts, the more money they make. Prime example SLS and Orion.

He also said, SpaceX has saved the tax payer $40 billion. That's not only lower bids by SpaceX. They also forced the competition to bid lower too.

Yesterday a big convoy with ambulances and a fire truck was seen at Boca Chica. There was speculation, some political big figure would be there. Now this tweet came up.
