    London: The Shard

It's apparently the tallest building in Europe and designed by an Italian.
The official opening is July 5th I think and there will be lasers and fireworks probably.
One thing I am sure of is that the hordes of foreign happy snappers can't miss it, it's massive.

    Fokking gash innit..

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

It looks unfinished or broken at the top. Should be called The Shards.

If it was in a city that is blue skied most of the time and reflected that, it might be ok. But London is mainly grey and having been up close to the thing and seeing it from afar on a typical London day, it just looks like grey sludge. Probably pretty at night.

Looks like it was designed by a "Blue Peter" entrant. Odd to say the least, but then, you couldn't fill a stamps area with what I know about modern design.

Personal view, I think it looks good.

The individuality of the design and presence make it
    kind of special.

Mind you HRH Prince Charles, may just refer to it as a
    caruncle on the skyline.

He's not quite as good as his Dad with the one liners though.

    Not just yet.

Its a fine looking building, but london has its own unique skyline, mostly lowkey, lowrise and low profile, and it is all the better for that.

Due to its extreme height and unique shape, what this italian designed and qatar financed building does is to force everybody to look at it, it shouts and attracts attention, the design, although interesting doesnt have the class, awe inspiring impact or staying power of the empire state building, the chrysler building or even of some of britains mediaeval cathedrals and churches.

Londons skyline is defined by the dome of st pauls, not an in your face, upstart, look at me skyscraper.

In twenty years time it will look passe and old fashioned and will be regarded as a blemish.

I asked Renzo Piano how he’d respond to the accusation that the Shard represents the architecture of ego and arrogance ‘It’s quite true actually that tall buildings and towers are arrogant presences,’ he admitted, ‘That’s quite true generally speaking because they’re a symbol of power and money . And somebody said they’re phallic symbols, that may be true… But this isn’t a good enough reason to blame all tall buildings.
