I'm not one to try interpret song, art and the like. But this song has got me struck. It's been around for a long time, and every time I hear it, it reminds me of my first encounter with a Thai vixen as a tourist. I always just assumed it was about working girls from the perspective of men who fall for them.
I played this song on guitar at a gathering not so long ago and it sparked a debate about what it was about - a specific story of a girl Bernie Taupin knew, or of whores, or roadies, in general, and how encapture men.
For me the chorus says it all:"Tiny Dancer"
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows the tune she hums
But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Hold me closer tiny dancer - Obvious
Count the headlights on the highway - Reference to being stunned like a kangaroo in your headlights
Lay me down in sheets of linen Obvious again, a subtle way to say "fuck the shit out of me" - poetic because the starry eyed man factor. He's not say 'bend over on that short room bed bitch'
you had a busy day today Busy day - demanding customer who wants to be hugged and talk.
Wadda yas reckon?
