    Flood, how much

Just wondering what some of the people here have lost from the flooding. What has it cost you for the loss of and or damage beyond repair, plus the cost to fixing things that could be repaired. How much for the cost of staying elsewhere during the flood?

I know I'm getting close to the 200k mark and have depleted any savings I had. Just keeping my head above water but we'll get through it.

First of all, I feel for all who adversely impacted by the floods from last year. The economic, social, and mental impact on the country and individuals was and has been horrendous. There is nothing I can say that relays deep sympathy for those affected. I would just hope that all have gotten their lives back together and are on the road to full recovery.

On a personal note Khun Eliminator, consider your blessings for your lovely wife who provided guidance and stability to the recovery process and to your friends who offered and provided assistance during the major impact period.

Wishing you and family the best.

But, any plans to leave the affected region? Or is that not possible?

ST, of course I can't thank my friends enough that helped me so much during this whole ordeal. LT is one of the best people I know and helped not only my family but many others out during this time.

Ned, thanks for the well wishes and hope we can hook up the next time you're in town.

Pat, I really can't see getting out of the area any time soon as I don't think ANYONE is buying in this area right now. O would have to sell up to get out.

Lost a few items of furniture that had been stored in my Father-In-Laws place in Saphan Mai.

I wrote an article on the aftermath of the Thai floods for an American publication earlier this week. This is an excerpt....this paragraph is derived from a comment made several months ago on TD. It occured to me that a lot of these property owners whether foreign or local were no longer receiving much media attention.

'For residential property, especially for owners, the outlook is uncertain. Most owners have little option but to sit tight and see what happens this year. Re-selling properties at a decent price that were in the path of the floods last year is extremely hard, and repairing properties that may be affected again has led to some ‘Farangs’ (Westerners) with the chance to move elsewhere simply upping and abandoning their properties.'

I am cutting down my wassana trees today, and taking the stalks and re rooting them. We still have to lay sod as well. Well over 150,000 so far. It was nice meeting you mate, and hopefully it will be under better circumstances next time. Thanks for the update.

Main problem is the heat, as all my big shade trees died.

I suppose if you add up all the furniture we have had to replace we lost about 200k and consider ourselves lucky compared to others.

Sorry to hear about your ongoing bad luck eliminator but your a good bloke with a great family and it will only be a short time until you are back up on your feet.

    Just keep on keeping on.

My ex-wife has a few one room gaffs in Bang Bua Thong, I recall she showed me when we arranged to meet amicably sometime 7 years ago. Many were buying at the time, she said. Huge new development it was.

These things are sent to test us, and I'm sure you'll get through.

I skint myself helping a couple of family members last October and even had to bail out of my Bangkok hotel to stay at a family place in Pattaya, I was that broke. (Although I have been fully repaid now)

The floods had a serious knock on effect on many people, and I sure as hell hope it isn't any worse this year as I'm due in town again soon.

Personally fortunate here in Northern Suphan with no losses due to the naam phuem. Nevertheless, tried to help out a few less lucky. My crystal ball says no repeat this year of what we saw last year.

Driving up to CM the other day saw a great deal of levee improvement south of Nakhon Sawan. That area was heavily devastated last year.

We were very lucky. At our old house two kilometres away, the water in peoples living rooms was chest high !

In our new home the water in the living room topped out at about 1 foot deep. As I had already moved everything upstairs damage was minimal and as I did all the re plastering and painting repairs myself the total bill came to less than 5000 baht.

However, we were obliged to evacuate for a fortnights holiday which cost about 15,000 in hotel bills etc, but it could have been worse.

I understand the OP lives in Bang Bua Tong just over the road from Bangyai. I know it was very bad over there so I extend my sympathies to you.

At the time, the pervasive opinion here was :

    " Surely , it can't get any deeper ? "

This caught a lot of people out including ourselves. Had we known how deep it was going to get and for how long I would have fled the scene earlier. As it was it quickly became impossible to drive out so our car was marooned. Luckily I jacked it up above the water level before we left otherwise it would have been totaled.

In some places , Bang Bua Tong for example , the water was so deep it became impossible to lift the cars above the water level.

As for property prices, everything on hold this year. Fortunately, Thais have short memories and if there is no serious flooding this year things should get back to normal.

Its also worth remembering that the previous year, when the Democrats were in power, there was also serious flooding in many areas that up until that time were reported as being the worst for a couple of decades.

Personaly, I don't think we will see floods like last year for a long time for the simple reason that Thailand cannot afford a repeat performance. If the same were to occur this year it would just about cripple Thailands economy.

I was very luck, probably cost me 50k or a tad more; caused problems for 3-4 months only.

Many folks lost much more, are still feeling the pain now and will continue to for a long time to come. This year, if the flood comes again as predicted by many to be worse...

Predicted to be worse but have my doubts. After Katrina, all the weather prognosticators were saying we're in a cycle of severe hurricanes. Guess what? There hasn't been a remotely significant storm to hit the GOM since.
