    Are you futureproof..?

Let's face it, if you're not in the highly moneyfied stratosphere that Chairman Mao lives in there are some stark realities facing us all, that are yet so easily tuned out in the haze of a Chang afternoon.

So what's it looking like from your perspective..? Are you betting on an oil strike in your own back yard, or is self sufficiency an increasing part of your lifestyle..? Perhaps setting up a micro brewery may solve all your future needs.

One thing is certain, the lifestyle you may aspire to, based on a petroleum economy, is sure to be revealed as a chimera in the next decade.

So, are you prepared? Would a life of self sufficiency change your life significantly from the one you know now, or do you just have enough beer tokens to see you into your grave before they lose all value as a means of exchange?

    I heckle you not
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

This sort of statement of is part of the eco-religion's armageddon propaganda to talk the masses into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Nothing is certain; and the probability of such a scenario happening is (literally) debateable.

I reject the whole notion that it's the duty of citizens to clean up the world, and I will keep undermining the current naggy-state recycling programmes until the authorities crack under the pressure and put the onus on the corporate world (through taxation) to solve the problem by manufacturing less unsustainable crap (including the packaging).

A response so laughable that it's premise could only be interpreted as a cunning ruse or the poorly disguised alter identity of 'the gents'.

Always struck me as a whoremonger? working in Thailand. Nothing wrong with that, just saying like.[/quote]

Funny you mention that, as im trying all three. My money is tied up in the Falklands at the moment (next week, i`ll know if im gonna be rich), I come from a farming background, and brew some shit hot beer, and to top it all off, my area is fast becoming the micro brewery id the UK. Win, win for me.

If it all falls through with my investments, nothing will change, and I`d quite actively welcome self sufficiency as means equalising the population, and returning to a more simpler age. Lets face it, what has the interweb given us? More reason to be unhappy, and prove to us that we`ve been lied to for decades by our "superiors". I remain convinced our parents/grandparents were far happier when ignorance was bliss, just look at the reds in Thailand.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong
I`ve been dragging my heels with a bitch called hope
Let the undercurrent drag me along.

I'm shitting my britches in the thought of this group being able to be self-sufficient if ever such events caused them to be so....

So steeped and dependent on the system.

It wouldn't be difficult to become self-sufficient in the countryside of Thailand. As a matter of fact, I can't think of a better place to be if the system collapses. People here are still living relitively close to the earth. There's a huge crop of sweet potato growing just beyond my back wall. I can jump over and snag a few if needed. I do know how to make soap, a craft most people here have forgotten; something to barter with.

I'm with astasinim, simple is good and a better way of life. Perhaps we will all be better off for this economy to fail and it will, inevitably.

There is an exerpt from a new book, Wasted World: How Our Consumption Challenges the Planet by Rob Hengeveld, on Salon's website today, if anyone is interested.

The chances of an impending planetary crash are rapidly growing. Here's what the numbers really tell us

    I am ready for it.

I've got a huge Rambo knife with a built in compass on the end of the handle and everything.

I've got all the bits and bobs you need to survive in the wild. Cooking pots. Rope. Cam cream for the face. Worn in boots. Long Johns. German WW2 helmet. Sleeping bag. Tent. Porno mags. Radio. Dogs. Chickens. Baseball bat. Books. Bow & Arrow.

Bollocks, everyone knows the p2e divergent phugoid will superpose on the peak oil apex mid century - there'll be a final epic economic boom once this depression bottoms out, and then not enough resources for a WWIII. Just patches of anarchy.

I've got an allotment, but I've a feeling a flamethrower might be more useful to hose down all the killer zombie immigrants from nicking me brambles.

I was talking about this to a couple of chaps on Friday whilst looking over Bangkok from the apartment's rooftop. If the 'system' did fail, the 10 million or so in Bangkok would be fucked and it'll be the 'idiots' in rural Thailand who will get by. Funny that, innit?

I remember well the "Back to the land" movement of the 60-70's Still have a couple of books on how to plough with your own mule, build a log cabin, make your own cloths from rabbit skin....all kinds of shit.

The movement kinda fizzled when the hippies realized that this self sufficiency stuff meant working about 18 hours a day just to eat and stay warm. I think most of them ended up back in LA, NYC and places like that.....working as bankers and hedge fund managers. Valuable lessons to be learned trying to be self sufficient and off the grid for a while.

I could 'get by' self sufficiently- growing our own veges, plenty of mangy bush chooks around and bartering etc. More insects than the locals can eat.
I'm also developing a little brewing hobby, made a passable cashew apple wine last year, now I'm having a Press made up, and trying some mango & papaya nectar.
Come the apocalypse, one could certainly be in worse places than Isaan. But don't hold your breath.
