Good try by Chitown.
The outstanding replies so far to the question "is war ever justified"? are:
Rural Surin: The sound of one hand clapping
Butterfly: Everyone one should just surrender straight away.
Klarse.
For some one who relentlessly promotes himself as the "poster boy" of the alternative vision/viewpoint - you sure are an inflexible thinker.
It is always interesting to see some one in the process of reconsidering their beliefs. As Chi made it clear, he has undergone an evolution in his thoughts, that was bought home by a conversation with a guest.
As said, as someone who consistently promotes the "alternative" its funny to see you slam some one in the process of revising beliefs.
..or maybe you just simply are not smart enought to REALLY understand the consequences of the "alternate" viewpoint you promote?
.and I made a typo in the previous post. It should have read:
Rural Surin: the sound of one hand fapping
I'm a poster boy now?
How lovely.
Yup. here is the poster:
Is there ever a... (Is there ever a justification for war / military action?)08-04-2012 07:05 AMRural SurinChi's a moronic flag-waving naive [at][at][at][at].
and people who red with their repo turned off are dull f*cks......
RS is not smart. Anyone reading his one-liners can tell. He just hates the USA and everything to do with the American way. He can only form his one-liners on hate, not facts or reality.
I knew when I started this thread the usual suspects..trolls...haters would show up. At the moment he is the only member I have on ignore.
It is a shame about RS, because he could be a top notch, valued member here as I understand he was born here and lived here most of his life. I have heard he was born in a missionary family that served here. I have also heard he is luek kreung. Another person told me his father was an aid worker and that is why he lived here for long. I am not sure what the truth is, but it is apparent that he has spent more time in Thailand than most here. Sadly instead of sharing his experience, he posts hateful one liners. Instead of giving friendly advice, he talks down to people and tries to exalt himself as some perfected intellectual. It is apparent that he lacks the social skills it takes to build relationships and friendships with people that think differently than he does. A normal person can do that. A person with knowledge that belittles and insults others when he could enlighten and educate them is a sad thing. I would imagine he hurts and those hurts are deep rooted and inhibit these sort of idea exchanging social interactions. In the real world, if he showed some sort of humility and friendliness, I could probably have a genuine friendship with him. However, I am quite convinced he is a bitter and mean spirited person off the forum as well. I do not hate him. I have known many people like him in my life and my thought is always that they could be something greater, but ruin that possible greatness with their meanness and arrogance.
He does have some nice pics in the old Siam pics thread and although I am a history buff, I won't go there nor will I take him off ignore.
^ Interesting. Did not know any of the history. I asked him a while back if he was a native speaker (he did not reply) as he often uses words in the wrong context, and many of his posts are, when you actually read them, meaningless drivel of cliches strung together.
I was trying to work out whether it was a language problem, or early onset Alzheimers.
But, bottom line, I agree. There is something "broken" with RS, something that has made him a deeply embittered old man.
.....
One of my best friends has a very high IQ and is filled with knowledge about nearly every subject that you can imagine. His political, religious and world view is the complete opposite from mine. He does not have one other friend because he alienates everyone with his crap. I have know him for all my life and there have been many times where we have stopped communicating because of his argumentative and condescending behavior. But because of my thoughts concerning friendship in loyalty, I am still there for him when he needs me. I just keep it light and to small does of exposure. he told em the other day that he was going to be cremated because he only has me as a friend and lacks the other 5 required to complete the pallbearer's duties. There is nothing sadder than hearing a man 58 years old weeping about his life. He could be blessed with hordes of friends if he knew how to socially interact with people.
That's a common situation for those of high intellect.
That's a common experience of those of higher intellect.
Socrates drank the poison.
Aristotle and Plato were also isolated thinkers, yet 2,000 years later we are just able to achieve their levels of thinking.
Truly, the best are sacrificed on the altar of ignorance.
Glad we don't have those life's problems....
True, if you think like a clone.
A song of war.
First in Welsh, then in English at 2 mins into the vid.
Some words of war.

RS's comment about the socio-political bias in the framing of the question was very relevant (though to be fair to Chi, he wasn't denying this or trying to pretend otherwise). N's comment about the positive elements of a changing position were also relevant. Paps also touched quite acurately, if not kindly, upon the socio-cultural elements. Reconcillng these positions may offer a great starting point for this discussion; reframing/changing the point of view (contrual) is required for this thread to go anywhere at all; otherwise, like so many other threads (many of which I enjoy meself... hypocrisy is a virtue... ) it will just become a my culture v your culture argument. We have seen from so many of these that Americans and Europeans have very different cultural frames for war.
Interestingly, folks like Davis, who know about war and guns and death, etc, moved well out of the US propaganda machine's area of influence, and take a very different position from that of the blind flag waving sheep that proliferate the US take. No doubt the UK is the same. Cultures are cultures... Reframing is required before this discussion can even get under way, imo.
