Have you ever been scammed ?

Up until last week I thought I'd done pretty well avoiding scammers for so long. Maybe too long , and as a result I got caught with my guard down whilst driving to the shops.

I was taking a slow drive to the Big C when a motorcyclist pulled alongside and tapped on my window indicating he wanted me to pull over and talk. He didn't look threatening in any way so I slowed down, parked up and got out to ask what he wanted.

" When you pulled out of that junction back there didn't you see me ? " he asked.

    " No....why "

" You ran over my foot . I was parked on the corner and as you went by you went over my foot "

He put his leg forward and displayed a foot with a black tyre mark runing over his toes . Seeing this ' evidence ' , I assumed he was telling the truth and maintaining that I hadn't seen him , I apologised. He asked what I was going to do about it. I offered to go with him to a nearby clinic and have it looked at. He agreed and we set off, me following him.
One hundred yards later he pulled over again . I got out to see why. He explained that had been on the way to collect his son from school and that he didn't have enough time to go to the clinic. Not wanting to waste any more time I suggested some financial renumeration and he agreed. Only having 500 baht on me , I gave it to him. He looked a bit disappointed but agreed to this and we parted company.

As I continued my journey I was naturally thinking about this. On the way home I arrived at the junction in question and remembered that there was a big pot hole on that corner forcing people away from the curb to make the left turn. How then, in making this avoiding manoever, could I have run over his foot. And if I had managed this, why didn't he shout out when it happened. Then I thought about the tyre mark on his foot. Too perfect. Just running over his toes would not have left such a black mark considering all the dust about. Then again, his foot would have had to have been sticking out a long way from his bike for me to have run over it ??

I told all this to Ms Bangyai. She was not happy.

" Oh...that old chestnut ! Lots of Thais have been caught out with that one. "

So....its easy to be wise after the event but it just shows....you can't relax for too long once you leave the safety of home or one day your number will be up

Yes, thats what I thought at the time ...... pretty cheap . Toooo cheap. If he had been genuine I'm sure he would have wanted more. Actually , as scams go , I thought it was pretty original until Ms Bangyai educated me otherwise.

It's only a 500 baht lesson mate, live and learn

I was at the ATM in the UK some years back, when some pikey approached me and asked if I wanted a TV that had fallen off the back of a lorry, I gave him 40 quid, took it home and saw it really did fall off, as there was no picture just a black line running up and down the screen.

I've never been scammed in Thailand but I did hand over 500 baht one time, when the girl I was with opened her door without looking and sent a Thai on his motocy over his handle bars. I found it quite funny, she cried her eyes out, he was OK though. Had it been me who opened that taxi door, I do wonder if that figure might have multiplied somewhat

When I was in my early 30's, and for the first time in my life had some disposable income, some friends talked me into joining with them in what I now know was a pyramid scheme. After making good money (on paper) for several months, I decided to withdraw all of my initial investment - just to see if they paid. They did. So, I got my money back ($500) and left my earnings in ($500). This quickly multiplied (on paper) into several thousands of dollars. I was getting ready to go abroad again, so cashed out - or tried to. Address unknown....company unknown....So, I guess I got scammed - but the paper profits I lost were all based on paper earnings from my initial investment - which I got back. Cheap lesson.

Back in the late 70's on my second trip to Asia I went down to Sri Lanka. There I was scammed. I lost $200 in a currency exchange scam. My own greed and stupidity.

A less intricate version was tried on me in Bali just a year and a half ago. But poorly done, easily spotted and stopped. Sri Lanka a whole apartment building. Bali, a 4 sq meter room.

Forrest Gump said it best. "Stupid is as stupid does".

Once I gave 1000 THB to a motocy instead of 20 THB, I was quite drunk, and he didn't say anything

only later I realized, and blamed the bargirl for not telling me, so I cut the 1,000 THB from her usual fees. She wasn't amused.

no, it is a good beer

One of my relatives was a great friend of a director at that company, so when I was in Bkk, I was given a grand tour of the brewery and a nice lunch

Impressive set up, and a good tasting beer

a few years ago there was a girl, a junkie by the look of her, who operated in khao talo, she was well known, anyway she followed me out the gate of the project and when i stopped at the bakery she pulled up to say hi, remember me i worked on your house

anyway after a bit of small talk she showed me her foot which appeared to be covered in blood and an old dressing hanging off, she then explains she needs 500 baht to go the clinic

the blood looked like nail varnish or lipstick, i made my excuses, wished her look and made a sharp exit

related all this to my missus who said oh yeh she is well known, loads of stupid farangs give her money, not seen her for a few years, might have had an accident?

Butters has never paid more than B800 for a girl/TV, so yes, it is a lie

I once checked my pockets after a bender in Patong and found a fake 500 baht note that I'd been given as change at some bar the night before- the size, colors, and numbers were correct, but it had a picture of Mickey Mouse on it.

Possibly- this would have been around 1995 or so- I might actually still have it as I found it very amusing (in an 'I'm an idiot' sort of way)- I should find it and bring it to the bank.

A better question would be "when have you NOT been scammed in Thailand?"
I have been lucky, I suppose. There have been many attempts but few successful and none were expensive. Comes with the territory.

Got a friend who got the new iPad from Singapore. Decided to flog it on Craigslist. German guy answered the ad, and arranged to meet him at the sky train. My friend met the German guy, who asked him to move down the stairs to a more quiet location. 2 plain closed Thai cops jumped him, claiming without a work permit he wasn't allowed to sell product in Thailand. He wasn't convinced of their authority, but they didn't relent. Thought it best to pay them off( as is usually the case ) , as did his lawyer. After getting his Thai wife involved, tables started to turn. He was able to get away from the scene while she got in touch with some people, the key one being the head of Tourist Police. Seemed like a big game of one-ups-man-ship till the right help came. He got the iPad back, and the 20k, and hopefully shed enough light on this Craigslist scam that it won't happen again.

Sounds suspicious already. Glad the tourist police were helpful . They've also helped me out a couple of times in getting refunds.

Bought a new Toyota from the dealer on the light side of Sukhumvit. When the license plates came, I decided to have them do the first oil/filter change at tge same time they put the plates on. Not trusting a Thai mechanic, I checked the oil when I got home, neither it or the filter had been changed even though I was charged for it. They also misadjusted the clutch. Since then Ive serviced the car myself.

this never happens to thai like me...scammers have better tricks than this to decieve thai people such fake gold, pickpocket and so on. this trick is for people who feel sensitive to people. when i went to Ireland and studied there, there were three men trying to sell me Macbook i was very interested to buy but i had no money so i borrowed mee friend 100 euros. they showed me Mac an i thought he put in the box already before he gave me. then i realized there was nothing in the box, but coke bottle. the weight of the box was not light i felt the Mac in there. THAT was the trick i learned To live in anywhere around the world YOU sometimes learn acidentally. it happens everywhere . Live n Learn. at least you lost your money no your life!!!! (thai people always make themselve feel better this way)
