    Have you ever been mugged?

I got mugged in the Mexican border town of Tapachula near the border with Guatemala. I asked directions during daytime and the bloke and his 2 friends pulled a knife out. I had the wits to dig out an unsigned $100 travellers cheque, which was easily replaced and not easily cashed without the signature.

I reported it to the police who drove me round to see if we could spot the fellas but I got the vibe from the police that they were more interested in seeing if there was an angle to shake me down again so I escaped their company at the earliest opportunity.

It was good value actually as it was near the end of the trip and coming back from my central american adventure without the ubiquitous mugging tale would have made it a bit incomplete.

I also think it is somehow more authentic to be mugged by a man who is not wearing a dress, high heels and lipstick.

That is the only time I have ever been threatened with violence while travelling.

Luckily no. Been is some very dodgy places as well. Caribbean, Africa to ame a few.

The latest was about 5 years ago when I found myself on the wrong side of the train tracks in West Palm Beach drunk as hell. I left a bar and walked the wrong way home and was totally lost. It was about 3am and eventually found a (white) guy so asked him directions. He asked me what the hell I was doing there and how I should get out so I asked if I could walk with him back to where I should have been. He was on his way to work close to where I should have been (intercoastal waterway).

It is amazing how you can be in millionaires row there one minute and a block away, crack alley.

I don't think I've been mugged, but I reckon a few taxi drivers have emptied my wallet when I've been paralytic - can't remember...

I came around on the steps outside my condo in Bangkok, with no phone and an empty wallet, I might have lost all that prior to getting in the Taxi though. The Taxi driver did get me back however, by puking all down my shirt and pissing and shitting in my pants

^^ that reminds me actually, wouldn't call it a muggin though, a few Somalians used to wait outside the underground station and ask folks for their one-day travel cards; once, when I told them to fuk off, one of them pulled out a knife and told me to hand it over (the one-day travel card, I kid you not); I took great delight in tearing it into little pieces then giving it to him, at which point a very minor scuffle broke out and the transport police came out of the station and started to give me grief! That was one of the last straws that saw me leave the UK...

It was a .45 Desert Eagle. I was parked in front of a bar on Del Pilar St. on the strip, and about 11PM my mate (Brit Hong Kong cop) and I, and two girls, left the car where it was, and walked a few blocks down, and then down a very long, dark alley, to a seafood place. About 1AM, we walked back towards the bar. Half way up the alley, two guys with long, glittering fan knives materialized out of a side sub-alley. They started coming towards us waving the knives back and forth. I pulled out my .45, and put two rounds into a trash can right next to them. They turned and ran like hell. We went back to the bar and carried on. Not much of a story. Sorry. Took like five seconds.

Might add that armed muggings on or near the strip in those days were unheard of, and the Hong Kong cop with me was about 6'4" of rugby player.
They had to have been drugged out of their minds. Came down quick, though.

I don't know how I would react to getting mugged. Judging by the responses on here though I don't see it as a new career path

    yep.
    my very first paycheck.
kaffir with a knife waited outside the bank in the alley where my bike was parked and took my money after i had cashed it
whacked him with the crash helmet and then his mates attacked me and put me in hospital for two days.
luckily they didn't use the knife but i came second when i head- butted the brick one of them was holding with the back of my skull!
..still have a bloody great dent and a scar there, and mostly the reason i don't wear my hair cropped short.

3 times, once on Cyprus got knocked out clean going outside from a small bar and round the corner to the toilet never even saw him, came to with friends shaking me, sore and with empty pockets.

Twice at gunpoint by armed Police I kid you not...........!!!, once in Marsellies together with 2 other sailors around 5 in the morning waiting for a shore boat, they drove up lined us up asking questions about who we where and what we where doing and at the same time searched us + body punched a bit when we protested, they stole whatever money we had in our pockets and just left.

Last one by Police in Argentina they just cleaned us out going through a checkpoint in the sticks on the way back from a crazy whorehouse some way from the beaten path, it was pitch black no street lights and no one around, no explanations just stuck their rifles in our heads and very agressivly demanded money.

Both those times pissed me off no end .

Every time was more than 35 years ago, several have tried since but not gotten away with it, we where quite young gung ho sailors believing we where immortal and we routinely roamed about doing crazy things in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods on earth, along the way I learned a lot from more experienced hands and got pretty good at situational awareness and discouraging the bad guys in similar situations and those early experiences came good in my later life and career and still works today... eh so-far - knock on wood

So far ive been lucky and not been mugged, though i have been n a couple of situations where someone has obviouly eyed me up as a potential victim and decided to go elsewhere.

Nearist ive come to a real mugging is the consular service at the ritish embassy, but hats without the threat of violence so im sure if it really counts.

To answer the OP, yes in Manilla 1983 i think when Aquino got assainated at the airport just a week afer my visit.
Clever con, led by a smart lady in uniform with clipboard, lamb to the slaughter to my taxi, 2 smiling thugs and me unaware of what next.
I was lucky to be offered the chance to pay $50 or go to the nearest hospital - these were nice thugs, that is a good deal $50 sounded good to me.

last time I got deleriously paraletic at a freinds party.
Last thing I remember was (vaguely) being poured into a taxi, they gave the guy my address and $50.
Next memory is waking up the next day at about noon in the living room sick as a dog with a massive hangover and a big assed diamond ring I had was not to be found. Sweated on it all day as I new the missus would be pissed.
Two or three days later she asks why I'm not wearing it, told her the cabie must have swipped it. Into the dog box for a few weeks for me. I did feel genuinly bad as it was a gift and I was dirty as on the filthy cabbie. Needless to say the losss of said ring was brought up at every occasion possible.
Bitch gave it back to me for christmas 4 months later....
