    no, never

even though I have lived in dangerous areas and wandered around at night

I usually dress in Levis and T shirt, quite simple so do not look as if I would be a worthwhile target

having said that, in Rio I always kept a bit of money ready to give to any guy with a gun; better a few dollars poorer than dead

but they never asked me for it
    I have reported your post

I had a pair of gold earrings snatched from my ears on a crowed street, in broad daylight in downtown Nairobi about 10 years ago. I have no idea who took them, but they came up from behind and held my head so I couldn't turn to see who it was. Then they delicately lifted them out of my ears and vanished into the crowd.

After seeing all the poverty in Nairobi, I didn't even get upset.

It was a .45 Desert Eagle.
Man, that's a heavy piece of iron to carry around. You expecting Moros?
I, and all of the guys I worked with, had come to the very negative attention of the NPA, who had just assassinated JUSMAG Colonel Nick Rowe in Manila the previous year. We all moved about in armored cars (Toyota 4-Runner) and carrying heavy.

In the many years I lived in Brazil, I was never mugged although the missus was, once. Happened in Botofogo getting on a bus to Leblon and three big Negronas surrounded her as she got on - lifting her wallet out of her purse. Noticed the flap of her purse was open upon sitting down and looked back at these women going thru her wallet with seeming indiference.

She got her money and wallet back...

I see. Makes sense- the No Permanent Address go around with more than just a kris.

And it was more than a casual interest. A computer disk with all of our names and addresses, as well as ppt. photos.

I think so. He could have ripped my earlobes through.

On that same trip, my husband and I bought a used pajero one morning to use for our work. We then drove it downtown to an Italian restaurant for lunch. We sat at a table right in front of the pajero to overlook our new purchase. As we sat there eating, a man in a trench coat came up to the car, took out a tire tool, and started taking off the lug nuts.

My husband looked at me, not believing what he was seeing and asked "Isn't that our new car?"

Hubby and the restaurant security guard walked out there. The would be thief looked up and saw them, said "sorry" and put all the lug nuts back on, then walked off.

Probably thought it was abandoned. Most new Pajeros look abandoned, and this was a used one.

LOL. He probably did think it was abandoned. This Pajero was particularly ratty looking. Bought that way with hopes we wouldn't be robbed driving around the outback of Kenya.

Well you were kind of asking for it walking around a place like that flashing gold.

Never again. In my own defense, the earrings weren't big or ostentatious and Kenya had not been a dangerous place up until that time. There had been a change of government and the place went crazy with crime.

It was a .45 Desert Eagle. I was parked in front of a bar on Del Pilar St. on the strip, and about 11PM my mate (Brit Hong Kong cop) and I, and two girls, left the car where it was, and walked a few blocks down, and then down a very long, dark alley, to a seafood place. About 1AM, we walked back towards the bar. Half way up the alley, two guys with long, glittering fan knives materialized out of a side sub-alley. They started coming towards us waving the knives back and forth. I pulled out my .45, and put two rounds into a trash can right next to them. They turned and ran like hell. We went back to the bar and carried on. Not much of a story. Sorry. Took like five seconds.
    Typical pussy behavior.

Any decent chap would have taken them on, disarmed them with a virtuoso display of wit and hyperbole and administered a sound thrashing using no more than two fingers and a raised eyebrow.

Trouble with you septics, you have no finesse.

Well, I was with a British cop, and I never heard him say much witty at the time. As I recall, it was something along the lines of, "Oh fuck...."

Sounded more like 'me' than 'off', but it was a wee bit noisy.

I've been to that area, and also Guatemala and throughout Mexico. Sorry to hear about your mugging, but you didn't get hurt and they got UNSIGNED? traveler's checks? Ouch. You gotta sign them.

I've never been mugged or robbed face to face. Just had stuff stolen when I was not around.

I was however, held at gunpoint once. Not a happy feeling.

Once when working in civvies by some cnut who should have stuck to old biddies... extendable baton to the side of the knee changed his mind.

The best one I know of though was one of my old bosses.. 6' 2", a bit professor looking, actually a senior officer in the RAF Regiment with lots of operational experience (and a brain the size of a planet by the way). He was walking home with a carrier bag full of chinese take away when some dope tried to take it off him at gunpoint... I kid you not! He took five rounds and still held on to the fecker until the feds turned up. He just tells it that he was quite peckish and had promised his missus her fave dish as a treat... He was not having some fecking oik walk off with it. A genuine legend that bloke.

A genuine legendary fucking idiot. Taking bullets for some Chinese? (which he wouldn't have got to eat with 5 bullets in him).
    What a moron.

A couple of smackheads tried it on me in a back street of Kings Cross, in the wee hours. One of them had a knife. I was not exactly one to kowtow to a junkie- it was not long after I had stopped playing rugby for the navy. I just told them to fook off, or they would never walk again. They complied.

Late at night in Lisbon leaving a nightclub. Was on a major highway looking for a cab. Saw the knives and ran like fcuk, foolishly in hindsight, into the road. Probably more dangerous than handing over my wallet. Flagged down a passing car and got a ride to my hotel from a very helpful Portuguese bloke.
