Should deadly force have been used to stop the high crime of balloon-ery?

The BTS case seems to be a hot topic in Thailand and on TD. I, for one, am appauld that any civilized person would think the amount of force used by the Thai security guard was warranted. The whole thing boils down to a head strike which is using deadly force to halt the crime. Do balloons on the BTS warrant lethal force? Please!! This is was just another sad event to add to LONG list of injustices dished out to some farangs and scores more of to Thai people.

Maybe if he was in caught in a felonious act - armed robbery, rape, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping etc., but certainly not a balloons in hand crime.

    But balloons on the BTS?????

What say ye oh Teakdor judges and jury members?

I saw a video of him reacting to a savage beating.

Not reacting and then getting a savage beating.

ok I'll vote but I should not as you word the question in a pejorative way.
And wasn't he whacked before the video we saw ?
mainly for being a drama queen.
He looks ridiculous charging back and forth, likes he's carry a giant toy emu or something , for that alone ,he should have been tied to the front of the train and driven around Bangkok till all the balloons burst.

The BTS appear guilty of not giving adequate training to an employee who has been issued with a baton, and the consequences of striking another human with that weapon (or any other heavy object for that matter) on a vunerable part of his/her body which could ultimately result in serious injury/death.

This should be seen as a more important heath/safety issue than a popping balloon in a train carriage. Now, not wishing to lessen the good intentions of any H & S management decisions in Thailand of which there are very few, but if i were travelling on a train and heard a bang/small explosion i would immediately be looking in that direction before considering stampeding down the carriageway away from 'danger' trampling everyone in my path. However, I am not Thai so maybe i need reprogramming.

The fact that the police also seem to place more importance on investigating who was responsible for listing the video on YouTube rather than those injured in the altercation is another cause of concern.

It has to said however, that the incident took place around St Patrick's Day and the fact that the ill-tempered balloon carrier was Irish may not have helped his case. He seemed quite desperate to board the BTS possibly in order to reach his final destination with no further ado to sink a few dark ones. Like so many others of his ilk around that time of year, the confines of a hospital/police station comes as little surprise.

Yep, most .45 caliber submachineguns are a trifle gay, frivolous, flighty, spreading love wherever they point. Glad you liked the manly, studly beret - invented by the Frogs, don'tya know.....

You lot are having a laugh taking the side of that drama queen,
basically he lost the plot because he could not take a balloon on a choo choo train...
    to illustrate my point -

    once upon a time,
on the day of his execution a condemned man was allowed the meal of his choice
    he asks for scrambled eggs,
    poached eggs arrive,
he loses his temper big time, gets angry and upset
    his cellmate notes-
well if that's the worse thing that happens to you today , then you'll be having a good day....

The balloon man should have lamented at the absurdity of the red tape
and not allowed himself to be offended over a trifling thing and then let it ruin his day
better to leave the balloons behind or take a taxi.
If loosing a few balloons was the worse thing that happened to him that day , then he would have had a good day .

Excessive force. Would have been a fair fight if the Thai had used an appropriate weapon.

I am sending an email to the Thai consulate to complain about balloonery repression on the BTS.

I propose a day of protest. All farangs to wear balloon suits when travelling on BTS in support of this poor bloke.

As we have not seen the CCTV footage of the incident were Mr. Behan was struck by the guard it is hard to say if the “deadly force” (not sure a metal detector wand qualifies as a deadly weapon) was justified or not. Giving Mr. Behan the benefit of the doubt and saying he did not make any aggressive acts first then the answer is clearly no it was not justified.

My main problem with the whole incident is that through the entire time, Mr. Behan refused to give up the balloons and proceeded to the platform still carrying them. It would seem the entire focus of the BTS staff and their security contractor was to prevent that. Wouldn’t the rational thing to do when faced with such a situation would be to say “ok, here’s the damn balloons now get out of my face?”

Continuing to carry the balloons up the platform and attempting to board the train with them just seems to be extreme to me.

He has head wounds, abrasions and bruising. Any head strike can be deadly. I had a good friend who died after he was repeatedly struck in the temple with a closed fist. The attacker did time for murder.

As we should. Innocent until proven guilty is the norm....even if this is Thailand and we know that just the opposite is often the case here.

Why would he. They let him at the last BTS check point and it is not a BTS rule anyhow,

They should focus on the rules that ARE in place, not something that is not a rule.

He was allowed on the BTS at a previous check point. They were ballons for Gawd's sake, not bombs.
