Thought y'all should read this in case you're thinking of installing an
electric fence! We have the standard 6ft. fence in the backyard, and a few
months ago, I heard about burglaries increasing dramatically in the entire city.

To make sure this never happened to me, I got an electric fence and ran a
single wire along the top of the fence. Actually, I got the biggest cattle
charger Tractor Supply had, made for 26 miles of fence. I then used an 8 ft.
long ground round, drove 7.5 feet into the ground. The ground rod is the
key, with the more you have in the ground, the better the fence works.

One day I'm mowing the back yard with my cheapo Wal-Mart 6hp big wheel push mower. The hot wire is broken and laying out in the yard. I knew for a fact that I unplugged the charger. I pushed the mower around the wire and reached down to grab it, to throw it out of the way. It seems as though I hadn't remembered to unplug it after all.

Now I'm standing there, I've got the running lawnmower in my right hand
And the 1.7 gigavolt fence wire in the other hand. Keep in mind the charger is about the size of a marine battery and has a picture of an upside down cow on fire on the cover.

Time stood still. The first thing I notice is my balls trying to climb up
the front side of my body. My ears curled downwards and I could feel the
lawnmower ignition firing in the backside of my brain.

Every time that Briggs & Stratton rolled over, I could feel the spark in my
head. I was literally at one with the engine. It seems as though the fence
charger and the POS lawnmower were fighting over who would control my
    electrical impulses.

Science says you cannot poop and pee at the same time. I beg to differ.

Not only did I do all at once, but my bowels emptied 3 different times in
less than half of a second. It was a Matrix kind of bowel movement, where
time is creeping along and you're all leaned back . It seemed like there
were minutes in between but in reality it was so close together it was like
exhaust pulses from a big block Chevy turning 8 grand.

At this point I'm about 30 minutes (maybe 2 seconds) into holding onto the
fence wire. My hand is wrapped around the wire palm down so I can't let go.
I grew up on a farm so I know all about electric fences... but Dad always
had those POS chargers made by International or whoever that were like 9
volts and just kinda tickled. This I could not let go of.

The 8 foot long ground rod is now accepting signals from me through the
perm-a-damp Ark-La-Tex river bottom soil. At this point I'm thinking I'm going to have to just man up and take it, until the lawnmower runs out of gas.

'Damn!,' I think, as I remember I just filled the tank! Now the
lawnmower is starting to run rough. It has settled into a loping run pattern as if it had some kind of big lawnmower race cam in it.

Covered in poop & pee, and with my balls on my chest I think 'Oh God
Please die...pleeeeze die'. But nooooo, it settles into the rough lumpy cam idle nicely and remains there, like a big bore roller cam EFI motor waiting for the go command from its owner's right foot.

So here I am in the middle of July, 104 degrees, 80% humidity, standing in my own backyard, begging God to kill me. God did not take me that day... he left me there covered in my own fluids to writhe in the misery my own stupidity had created.

I honestly don't know how I got loose from the wire...
I woke up laying on the ground hours later. The lawnmower was beside me, out of gas. It was later on in the day and I was sunburned. There were two large dead grass spots where I had been standing, and then another long skinny dead spot were the wire had laid while I was on the ground still holding on to it. I assume I finally had a seizure and in the resulting thrashing had somehow let go of the wire. Upon waking from my electrically induced sleep I realized a few things.

1- Three of my teeth seem to have melted.

2- I now have cramps in the bottoms of my feet and my right butt cheek (not the left, just the right).

3- Poop & pee when mixed together, do not smell as bad as you might think.

4- My left eye will not open.

5- My right eye will not close.

6- The lawnmower runs like a spotted ape now. Seriously! I think our little session cleared out some carbon fouling or something, because it was better than new after that.

7- My balls are still smaller than average yet they are almost a foot long.

8- I can turn on the TV in the game room by farting while thinking of the number 4 (still don't understand this)

That day changed my life. I now have a newfound respect for things. I
appreciate the little things more, and now I always triple check to make sure the fence is unplugged before I mow.

The good news, is that if a burglar does try to come over the fence, I can clearly visualize what my security system will do to him, and THAT gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over, which also reminds me to triple check
    before I mow.

My brother in law lives near Chi in a semi gated community. He has big walls as do all in his area. Some have the glass and barbed wire too. Go to Sathorn or Sukumvit and go down the sois, all the old Thai houses that are worth a fortune have the same style walls.

I dont like them and dont have them where I live. But I can see the need to have them. I first came here over 30 years ago and saw them everywhere the rich lived.

I see both sides but better to be safe than sorry, or even if its your land do as you like. Sadly no zoning or restrictions here.

Trying to see both sides. Not easy on an issue like this.

Its funny because both SEA and Chi are yanks as am I. We would not even have a fence in the front of our house in America I dont think. Its just about safety.

    A shock for 'Peeping Tom'

    19/08/2005 08:42 - (SA)

Bangkok - A Buddhist monk-in-training from Cambodia was electrocuted in northeastern Thailand when he touched a live electric wire set as a trap for Peeping Toms seeking to peer at women using a nearby bathroom, police said on Thursday.

The body of the 19-year-old Buddhist novice from the northwestern Cambodian province of Siem Reap was found on Thursday morning near the bathroom built outside the home of Thongkhao Hajhom in Thailand's Sisaket province, 430km north of Bangkok, police captain Waranon Jullanon said.

Thongkhao told police he set up a live electric wire outside the bathroom to shock people peeping after he heard that young men in the area were peering at his daughter when she took her bath.

No one had been caught in the trap until Thursday, when police were informed that the body of the young monk in his saffron-coloured robe was discovered near the bathroom and an autopsy found he had been electrocuted.

No charges have been filed against Thongkhao and an investigation was continuing, police said. The name of the monk, who was staying temporarily at a temple near the house, was not available.

Broken glass probably is equally as effective as an electric fence, for home protection - if they wanna really get over/through either, they will, but a high wall with lights and broken glass will probably encourage the scumbags to go somewhere else instead...

The rented Townhouse I live in is heavily fortified. After I open the glass sliding doors to get in, I have to unpadlock barred sliding doors, every window has bars and the 2 doors upstairs have cages on that exit to the balconies. The easiest way to get in here would be the kitchen door which is wood and shows signs where someone took a screwdriver and pushed it through the edge into the lock. There is a big bolt and padlock on the inside of that door now.

How much were the cameras? I want some that I can check from my mobile when I am not home. And maybe a remote 50 caliber machine gun I can fire remotely too.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to build a couple of towers at the corner and employ a off duty policeman, they come with their own gun and ammo.

You must live in another Thailand than I do
I'm with Mid on this one. If you feel the need for high walls with spikes/electric fence/ alarms etc etc, then you're either living in some farang ghetto which attracts thiefs like flies to horseshit - or you've built a way-over-the-top mansion in darkest Issan and treat the poor locals like a turd on your shoe.

I've lived in north Phuket for 10 years and have neither high walls, dog, spikes etc etc etc - and never lock my door at night. Never had a problem, (except that fcuking big snake yesterday).

The locals either think I'm too poor to steal from, or I'm leaving the door open at night to tempt them into my line of fire.

Either way - it works - and I'm much happier not live in a 'fortress'.

Are you guys living behind your barbed wire and 3 metre walls happy???

Cameras are very cheap (depending on the model you choose) to set up- the thing is that you won't really spend much time watching them (you'll either have a separate monitor or you can use the dual-screen option on your TV)- they're great for when you're expecting someone as they allow you to keep an eye on the front gate, but they don't work very well at night (except for high-end infrared models).

I've got several cameras set up, and I mostly use them for when I'm expecting a delivery (it's fun to watch the truck roll by your house several times because the driver hasn't been able to grasp your simple directions or notice the clearly-displayed house numbers).
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

if you remember the thread, I left my gate open and some old bastard walked in and started helping himself to my beers!

I frightened him off with my Speedos

in towns you do get more casual sneak thieves, but most of them are just opportune rather than planned

    AGREE!
I once lived in a place where the owner built the high walls even higher because he was robbed. I couldn't stand the place and felt like a prison.
I left after 2 months. (should've been one)

People with too much money waste a lot of it trying to protect it.

I've got a decent wall around my place- while I agree that it won't keep anyone determined out, it will certainly slow them down, and it will be pretty obvious to my neighbors should anyone happen to notice them- I also have three dogs that would know instantly if someone was attempting to gain access to my property, and wouldn't be shy about alerting me- if anyone actually managed to get past the fence and the dogs and broke into my house while we were home, my wife has a Glock 19 that would certainly be a deterrent (not that I would ever want to see someone get shot for simply breaking into a home, but if making them aware that the owner is armed doesn't cause them to retreat, they are asking for what they get).

An electrified fence would end up frying my cat, and I don't think I'd consider it (though it's an interesting idea for a high-crime area).

Jesus Failsafe!! - throw away the dogs, Glock and wall! Get some geese - that is all you need to deter burglers or inquisitive locals.

Why don't you give your house a name-board as well? 'Bahn Pii' seems to work quite well

'Throw away the dogs'? They're my buddies (and they're barkers, but not biters- they love everybody, and would probably assist any burglars that made it in)- you don't just toss your buddies.

Do you wear a seat belt when you drive your car? Or a helmet when riding your motorbike?
In Bangkok most large houses and businesses have spikes. It seems almost standard.

Cats can detect the electromagnetic field from and electric security fence. It has been likened to them smelling it. So cats are in no danger from a properly installed fence. Dogs have no such ability but cannot usually jump that high.
