It seems my Uncle and a few other farangs around think that Thais will get what they are saying in English if the shout at them. Do any of you do this or have you been around other farangs that do so?

In my experience, lots of people do this when speaking to foreigners without a perfect grasp of their language.
Heh...before one of our 'cousins' mention it, the belief is it's 'Merkins who do the loudest shouting at foreigners.
Not so. Germans are the loudest.
speak Thai!! I get things cheaper!!! I used to live in Spain and many expats couldn't string a sentence together.. even after years in the place... embarrassing cnuts ..
also noticed the same with the pattaya expats ... its the raised voice and hand signals that make me laugh!!!
its pure lazy
If You Shout, They Will Understand You. Stupid Fuckers!
I do it, not for the reason they will understand, but for the sheer pleasure I get from it :)Quote:

You have to have the right accent but shouting makes Thai's recoil so it's counterproductive...
I do find it funny how they can mangle the language then not understand a word we say if one tone off. I want ice. Sci Nam Kang na kop. Not a clue. But then two hours later a university student walks in my office and says esskusa my teecha, and somehow I can make out that its excuse me teacher. Perhaps its just a general lack of situational awareness.
Uncle shouts a lot at his wife for beers, food and and a ton of other things. It does not seem to bother his young bride as she always takes care of him as if he were a toddler. I guess she likes the house he built for her and the money he gives her enough to over look it. :)
It's traditional in Britain that if Johnny Foreigner doesn't understand you shout at them slowly.
*TEA...WITH...MILK...AND...SUGAR*.
It gives them time to absorb every word and keeps their gnat-like attention.
But it has to be slowly.
Just shouting doesn't work.
:)
Farang are not supposed to be able to speak Thai. Occasionally, there's a 100% Farang on TV here (not leuk kreung) who speaks grammer-perfect, accent-perfect Thai and the Missus will remark - "check this out."
The whole thing has to do with Thai's natural xenophobia...
Oh yes, and it guarantees a great big lump of gob stirred into your cuppa.
Or maybe they really are Thick as Shit ?Quote:

It is when they speak pigin that I get a laugh
I hear that a lot too. Sometimes it is an English teacher telling telling his wife things like - I hungry too much, you cook food me mak mak.
If the Thai had submitted to the imperialist jackboot of British rule we wouldn't have the problem we are experiencing now. Two centuries of being bawled at by their betters accompanied by the odd clip about the ear and a boot up the arse does pay dividends. Just take a look at the Indians, they're teaching the Thai now.
Ah well.
That's how many speak in the classroom too (teachers I mean)...Quote:
