Possibly the City expats should go live in the countryside and see the difference.

I have to laugh when i look back when i first came to live in the country i bought all the mod cons, beds, settees, dining tables blah blah, and now i am more comfortable sitting on a thai bed cost 400 baht, sitting outside in my hammock, cost 300 baht.and sitting on the floor eating my food, with the family.

Let me get this straight. Having human furniture is a bad thing, right?

I couldn't stand to live here on less than 30k a month. 6k? That's got to be a joke. I think you'd be eating noodle packets every day rather than street food.

Figure on 65k a month to live like a human. 100k+ for luxury.

This is absolutely the first time in my life that I have heard or read that a bed, sofa and table are "mod cons". I thought mod cons were climate controlled A/C , Automatic washing machines with 20 cycle varations, 56' LED TV with full surround sound......stuff like that.

Why not just find a suitable cave, move in, and be done with it...... or just move to someplace like Somalia and really do it right. I mean the poorest of Thai's are trying really hard to acquire beds, tables, and sofas.....they are becoming all the rage. They have had the benefit of sitting on the floor and sleeping on planks for generations.....they are finally getting it out of their systems.

Meanwhile, some farangs who were fortunate to be born into a world that had evolved to the degree that some creature comforts were available to virtually eveyone, now feel compelled to reject thousands of years of painful development, and long for the living standards of the Crow-Magnon era.

What causes this strange behaviour? Is it lack of coping skills? Inability to compete in a comptitive world? Some kind of machismo? Guilt? WTF is it?

I think my own life is very simple. If my house gets hot I just push a button on a plastic stick thing and cold air starts coming in. Simple. If my clothes get dirty I just dump them in a big white box thing....pust a button...wait 45 mins and they come out nice and clean.....Simple. If I want to tell everybody about this I just sit down and start punching buttons on a flat board and the whole fucking world gets to hear about it....Simple. When I want some money I go to a box in the wall down the road a bit....stick a card into it and money comes out......Simple

I could of course do without all of these things, but why would I. My predecessors went to so much trouble to invent, develop and improve all of this....and I notice that the billions of poor bastards in the world who don't have much, all want the same stuff I have. I have a duty and an obligaion to my ancestors to continue using and improving what they left me, and a duty to be a role model for the poverty stricken everywhere.

Life used to be much more complicated.....but we simplified it. Years ago there was no way I could just get money out of a box in the wall like that.... or talk to somebody on the other side of the world anytime I feel like it.... Aaah the simple life....

I think if the truth were known, most of the wannabe Jeremiah Johnston types would fold in a few months if it was not for the fast paced, hi-tech world that swirls around just outside their little fantasy bubbles of self-sufficiency and enlightened life styles. The fact that they write about it on every forum constantly...is a bit of a giveaway........oh gotta go.....the Capucchino machine is beeping.....Caio...

Koman what a tosser you are,Mods cons were a figure of speech yes i have all the things you mention theres no need to find a cave.

If you read the post, i said NOW i prefer a thai bed and hammock.

Being self sufficent is a choice, that you make,if you wish to live a life without meaning go do so.

Why many of your kind come here is beyond me, you have moved to a country that is many years behind your own countries, but still wish to live your western ways.

You not doubt look at the poor of this country, and find there a hindurance to your existence.

That includes me. Once the house is built (only an hour and a half from Bkk), I doubt I will stay there often... Going native... Horrible thought - you think I moved half way across the world to give up my English lifestyle and go native!

BB thats the point, many farangs come here, and do exactly the same as they did in there own countries, pointless in my eyes.

Dear me Yaskjack...... The point of the post, and the question was "why".

Why for instance do you....(and other of like mind) seem to think that anyone who does not live in some shithole and deprive themselves of the comforts and convenience of the 21st century must be living a life without meaning? What "meaning" does your life have that mine does not? Why would you assume that someone elses live was meaningless regardless of their economic position?

Do you really believe that being deprived of comfort, and naval gazing give life "meaning" ?

Nobody anywhere is truly "self sufficient" any more.....they just go through the motions, and live the fantasy. Farangs set themselves up in a place where they can not even legally own a piece of land....and they think they are "self sufficient".....gimme a fucking break. What they are doing is a kind of camping.....in a rented camp site where they have to go ,visit the park
ranger every 90 days to tell him they want to keep camping, and trusting he will allow them to do so....

I did not come here to live like a poor Thai. You would have to be seriously challenged mentally to do that. I am a Westerner and will never be anything else.....I came here for the warm weather, abundant pussy, excellent Thai TV soap opera,... and to watch some of my fellow farangs make fucking idiots of themselves pretending to be like rice farmers...(99% of which would give anything to live like even a low income farang) ...and finding it necessary to constantly tell the rest of us how great it is......

... sorry if that make me a "tosser".....don't forget your 90 day report and/or border runs, and permission to stay extension now.....all part of being totally self sufficient and a free man in the land of smiles, where life is so much simpler if you just know when and how to use the tea money approach......

Koman, kinda amusing you have to bother with the 90 day reporting/visa extension shite.

I have not done a single 90 day report since I came here in 2006 and the visa extension is something that I just have to show up and present my face every 2 years, usually takes less than 5 minutes.
