Build it and they will come.

I have decided that I will retire in two years.
I don’t have to but I’m pretty sure I will.
    What will I do?
I have hobbies but that’s all they are and maybe they are not enough.
I was thinking, what kind of little business could I have that would
be easy to run, pay for itself and be enjoyable?

So I came up with the following idea and would like to hear
    your comments:

I built a house in Phimai, (about 50 k north of Korat),
and that’s where I intend to live once I retire.
I thought I would buy, (in the wife’s name), about two Rai of land
on the outskirsts of Phimai and build a Gym.
(In any case the land and building would be an asset for her if
    anything happened to me).

I have been weightlifting for around 3 years now and it has helped
me a lot and I have made remarkable progress in that time and that
is where I got the idea from.

They say that Issan people have no money. Well, a lot of them don’t
but from what I have observed there is a lot who do.
There are a few big houses round Phimai way and the kids are all
running around on new motor bikes / scooters and toting Iphones etc.
Everybody has a new pickup truck it seems.

The daily or monthly fees for the Gym in that area would not be
that much. I am sure that those who are interested could easily
afford it………but would they be interested……….I think they would.

In addition I reckon, if I could find a good aerobics teacher we
could get the young and old in there doing those crazy dance
routines they do. I think they would love all that shit.

I think if I market it properly I could get them interested.

I could pick up a couple Rai cheap enough and how hard
can designing a Gym be? I’ll look into that next.

I would get a kick out of teaching people how to weight
train properly and talk to them a bit about good nutrition etc.

If I got decent staff I would not need to be there all the time,
(just in case I had to go Europe or somewhere)
I mean a Gym runs pretty easily doesn’t it?,.........doesn't it?

    It's just a drawing-board idea at this stage but I think it's
    worth exploring.

    So what do you think?
    You know nothing Jon Snow.

If you spent your retirement on Forums instead, you would find it burned a lot less calories. Plus you would be killing time en route to the grave quite effectively.

Also you can visit the famous temple in Phimai at weekends.

Good luck with it mate. If you don't make money who cares as you can just treat it as a hobby and keep yourself fit at the same time.

Much better than retiring to Thailand leading a useless life drinking piss full on, shagging whores and destroying ones health.

Phimai is a pleasant enough place but not to many farangs living there.

    Nothing wrong with admiring beauty.

Just think Jon, if you had little or no business you would have a peaceful place to work out and enjoy yourself. On the other hand you could make a bunch of money.

That's what I was thinking Ceb, I would like it to be a succeed because it's enjoyable and people get a lot of good out of it, but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter if it does or not.

Invest your retirement savings in a proper country, not here. Thailand is a great place to be a spectator, it's a toilet for farang participants.

Thanks mate but I know that already. I've been in SEA for 20 years and in Thailand for 12 of those.

It's not an investment for retirement, it's something to do.
I have enough money to retire apart from this otherwise I would not
    entertain the idea.

I wish people would learn to read what's written and not what they think is written.

    what he said. ^^

how can you advise on weightlifting and nutrition without the necessary language skills, (apologies if you are already fluent.)

can you get a workpermit to run a fitness centre and be a fitness trainer, have you got the 2 million necessary to open a business, and will it make the required profit to ensure that your work permit is extended every year.

do you really want to spend your retirement dealing with young thai men (who weightlift for a hobby.)

do you really want to hire and train thai staff and put up with their incessant excuses for not turning up, turning up late, fiddling the takings, selling the equipment, ignoring customers so they can chat on the phone etc.etc.etc.

do you really want to leave your business in the hands of thai staff whilst you return to europe for a few weeks.

stick to it as a hobby and enjoy your retirement.

get the wife to open a restaurant or bakery or something.

    Je-sus, what a defeatist attitude.
If things depended on people like you we would still be in the fcukin caves.

I’m not starting a multinational company here.
    It’s a Gym FFs.

Yes I know how Thai staff work and I know all about work permits etc.
The wife's got better things to do than run a bakery thanks very much.

Young Thai men who weight train for a hobby? What are you saying?

i agree also with taxexile, you need to be really sharp to the thai style of doing business.
    suppose 'a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. .

Still i wish you very well in your retirement. <smilie>

I think it could be a goer. Some Thai people love to keep fit, and even more like the idea of being seen to keep fit.

If there is no existing gyms in the area you will do well in the early stages, as long as you are able to sign people up to contracts. If they don't turn up after the first month then thats their loss.
You know that if your gym does well then there will be more springing up but thats a given for any reasonably successful business in Thailand.

Get a trainer or two and run spinning and yoga classes for the birds. Get a Muay Thai instructor also. The only person you need to trust with cash is the cashier.
If you make sure the equipment is kept in good nick you will be streets ahead.

If you have a bar/cafe area where people can be seen sipping protein shakes/fruit smoothies etc after their workout even better.

Best of luck with it whatever you decide, and good on you for wanting to do something rather than sit on your arse until you eventually die.
