Even though it's not directly related to that immediate time period, but still closely tied to WW2.....I might add The Boys from Brazil.

Starring Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, James Mason, et al - this thrilling and almost bopgraphical account of post-war Nazi war criminal hunting leads to cover-ups of Nazi scientists still plying their wares....namely, Joseph Mengele.

Quite a haunting film, because it is from the book of the same name based on real events and activities.

I watched " Windtalkers " (Nic Cage) on cable the other week and thought it was up there with the best action WWII movies.
It also gets an ass kicking on " rotten tomatoes " so its not everyones cuppa.

    ^

One of the greatest scenes in movies ever.

Shame the rest of the movie was nonsensical and ruined by Brad Pitt's character.

    Downfall.

Its the film whose 'Hitler ranting' clip is often re-subtitled in various witty ways by nerds.

WW2 movies don't age very well.
last one I saw , set partly in Dresden, was
    Slaughterhouse Five [1972]
    not bad

    I thought it was crap.

I'd say Das Boot gets my vote so far, certainly as the best movie about WW2, and I'd put 'Enemy at the Gates' as a worthy contender too.
A Bridge too Far is the best 'classic' WW2 war movie imo. But in terms of war epics, I don't think any movie matches 'Band of Brothers', the mini-series.

    Definately one of the best.

The Longest Day was pretty good too, which came out around the same time as The Great Escape.
The cast of The Great Escape was the best.

Where Eagles Dare had it all. A suicide mission. A traitor. They get to dress up in flashy Nazi uniforms and speak German. Lots of tripwire explosions. The only thing it was missing was a tiger tank.

The SS officer. I forgot the classic nosy SS officer asking questions suspicious of everyone.

Having spent 27 yrs of my life in the Royal Navy, My favourite would have to be " The Cruel Sea " especially the one-liner"s...." I"m the first leiutenant and dont you forget it " including "Snorkers ,good-o " and not forgetting " Hands to leaving harbour stations, special sea-dutymen close up " CLASSIC.
