One of the many things I liked about S. America and especially Brazil is there aren't any dirty, stinking backpackers in evidence. The ones seen around Thailand with their enormous packs infesting public transportation are a blight on the landscape.

    No, circa mid 90's.

Never saw them on the Rio public transportation for example or infesting overland bus stations.

There might have been a token backpacker presence but nothing like the sheer numbers you see here and in Europe.

Groups pointing at each other. Every idiot and his moron brother/sister preaches tolerance and understanding then promptly proceeds to denigrate the next group that doesn't fit with their delusional view of paradise.

Who's the worst. The backpackers, the flea-ridden dropouts from society, the old git with his barely-legal chick, the old git that drinks himself to death, the delusional strutting young turk that brags about his success in Thailand never questioning why he has to come to a low-intelligence third world hell hole to be 'successful'?

Backpackers are no worse than anyone else.

I admire your self-delusional, environment-ignoring, fact-free ability to point fingers at all others, but wtf has that to do with the thread title.

I was never a backpacker btw. Not defending a fading memory.

    ^ based on your gibberish

if you actually thought about what you write, maybe you wouldn't write it

"all backpackers stink, get rid of them" is essentially what you wrote

    how stupid is that?

No, we hated them cos they were a pretentious bunch of cheapskate wankers while we were a down to earth bunch of working lads with pocketfuls of hard earned. Where in my post did I say anything about them going to uni? I just said most hadn't worked before and were for the most part living on their parents money, so were jealous that we could smash the ring out of it while they had to watch their poxy budgets.

My family was fairly well off, but as soon as I was old enough I didn't accept a penny from them and earned my own money.

Also, a couple of times I'd be in the vicinity of the pseudo-intellectual pretentious wankers and couldn't help but intervene and intellectually wipe the floor with their naive and idealistic bullshit arguments.

Who are you to call me thick beacause I haven't been to Uni, fucktard? A graduate of media studies or summat?

Fuck right off, I was probably more intelligent than you are now when I was 16 years old mate, despite whatever degrees and pieces of paper telling you you are intelligent you may have. I don't need a piece of paper to prove my intelligence or to earn money, and neither does Richard Branson or numerous other multi-millionaires who didn't go to uni, you snobby twat.

Also, how intelligent is the decision to go to uni for most people, aside from those doing vocational degrees? As far as I'm aware there are thousands of degree level educated people with mountains of debt unable to get a job or working in McDonalds. Very fucking clever that, eh?

Just a heads-up, Einstein. Chariots of Fire isn't a true reflection of University life.

Maybe not. But "Chariots Of The Gods" is a close enough to true reflection of history and the universe. They didn't teach that in uni did they?

Anyways, it's the locals and their greed, not the backpackers, imho - ironically, it's often not the local locals, but fukin horrible locals that come from the likes of NsiT and fuk up places like Phuket and Samui...
The locals* construct a bunch of horrible attractions based on the perceived desires of the backpackers, and the backpackers come and eat it up- many if not most are kids, and kids tend to do what they see all the other ones doing. Somehow they think they are having an authentic experience in an exotic place. Maybe they are, but it is an experience that was constructed for them, not that came about organically.

*"ironically, it's often not the local locals, but fukin horrible locals that come from [elsewhere]" Too true. Also, the locals are often perplexed that anyone would enjoy their rustic setting as it is, since many of them are just itching to get away from exactly that.

no, it is from a novel, maybe based on some fact but from days gone past, so hardly truth

now, what about your hate for a large group of young people called "backpackers"?

Then it follows that the "What would you know about that" statement is a load of bogus BS then?

    ...hardly the truth too, eh?
