How did you end up in Thailand?

Special invitation by the Thai Government who paid for my airline and hotel expenses for 14 days.

If not for this I most probably would never have come here.

    Warning! Warning!! Warning!!!

Any information you post here will be twisted out of all recognition and used against you several years down the road*.

    * Unless you are already on smegs radar, in which case it will be used within the next day or two (and then constantly for the next several years)**.

** And if you are foolish enough to post in response to the subject matter, implicitly agreeing that you "ended up" in Thailand, you may well deserve it.

What if Thailand is not the "end" but merely a stepping stone for the future ?

    Ooooooooh! Smarty pants!

I followed my Thai bird who i met in the UK which turned into a disaster here. However, i wouldn't be with the person i am with now if i hadn't taken what was a disastrous path at the time. I'm well chuffed that i stayed!

In coordination with the Thai govt, I was doing some work for my parent country govt here in Thailand. Several trips and getting to learn the lay of the land gave me the thought of eventually retiring here. After meeting the spouse and working and traveling elsewhere in Asia and SEA, the retirement target date was set and made plans to retire here. Today, living the simple life of a retired Expat here in Thailand.

I am an unabashed Asiophile, I've basically been in lub with the place since my first expedition in 1982. Something about the casual, relaxed aspect of village life, and the gentle sway of Asian women's derriere. Then there's the food, prices and climate- all to my liking.

Why Thailand? because my wife is Thai. Otherwise, it could just have easily been the Fil's, Malaysia, Sri Lanka or elsewhere. Urban society in the West is not really to my liking, what with it's shallow materialism, and petty competitiveness. Something has gone wrong there- why are people with relatively enviable material affluence often so unhappy, and preoccupied to the point of distraction with trivialities?

    Ending up..??

Does this include youthful years into adulthood within the region?

My company gave me the choice to open an office in either Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand - so here I am, 11 years later, with no intentions of leaving.....

nice choice, all good places but I agree Thailand has the edge in many ways over Malaysia

I did make some real Malaysian friends though, who come and visit me here

The Thais are friendly but I don't have many that I can relate to in the same way
    I have reported your post

I think I may just as easily "end up" in Cambodia.
Sihanookville ( spell check please ) is starting to take off with the new airport completion (pun intended) .
A few friends have moved there already and started a guest house.
Just waiting on direct flights from PP to confirm if they will get the cash rolling in.
I came to Thailand on Holiday in 2003. I fear I missed the best of what it was, but enjoyed the ride ...
    Times come to move on.

Many people are just chronic wingers....you never hear from the ones who are affluent and happy, and the media generates most of the trivia due to slow news days.....and to provide entertainment for the disgruntled.....who frequently end up in places like Thailand....

So you were headhunted by the thai government and were a completely passive participant in a process that changed your life?

There's nothing petty, shallow, materialistic, and competitive about the thais then?

I have to say I found myself in thailand for practical reasons. once better half and I decided to get married we had to decide where to live, for practical reasons its bangkok. she has a job she really loves and makes a difference and I can work anywhere.

If I am honest I feel quote comfortable living in both places and fundamentally I don't have any major personal issues with either place.
