The FIL said he would ask for compensation for the damage if this happened to him, and if it wasn't paid he'd take pictures of the damage, the car and the people and take it to the police station; he is confident that the police would make the folks pay - if the police did not act then he would go further himself to get the damages or more...

^ whilst I can agree with you, the issue is that it's your home and they know it. Thus, depending on your reaction, they may well bring back more violence, so a considered approach would be wise; certainly a firm approach, but considered. :)
