    A golfing idea...

To you serious golfers out there I would appreciate your feedback. My brothers and I have been working on this www.sqrdup.com for the last three years. It now looks like this invention may float.

I am not trying to sale it on TD! I would just appreciate some TD feedback.

    Thanks,
    hillbilly

As you probably know Hillbilly, golf training aids are generally very marketable.

Your product appears more sophisticated than most of the alignment equipment models currently marketed, additionally size matters (the less bulky the better)

Lots of opportunities to air/exhibit new golf products around the world and i suspect that your team are very much onto to a winner. I wish you all well.

    When do i get mine?

I think you have done a nice job with this concept. Looks very salable. I hope you have it patented.
I bet it would do well at Golfsmith and similar retailers.

Would the colour of the lasers be more visible if red? The green may disappear on different shades of grass.

edit. Just looked at the online strore and there is indeed a red lasered version.

Yes we do have a patent for it, both for the states and internationally. This is really one of our big concerns because once it is in the Asian markets, well you know...

Looks great , send some in to the editors of the golf magazines as they often are always looking for content to review.

Also expect if there nothing else like this on the market and it does sell well , it will be easily copied.

Considering how cheap laser pointers are, I find the product to be quite expensive.

Are you involved in manufacturing ?

The retail cost is around $100

If these get wholesaled to dealers/stores they most often want close to 100% markup - that is how they survive , so cost is now down to $50 per unit in ChillBillys pocket.

Realistically this should not cost more than $25 each to manufacture , not including

plastic injection molding and tooling fees
these run into the $1000's for setting up

his patent costs (low end $6-$8K US) ,

then actual logistics of moving this larger item around.

And still the margins may still be close

Might be a good idea for training centres, but I can't see many serious golfers using one.

Good Luck though Hillbilly, what do I know, I wish you every success

    Golfers' Mate

Watch Dennis in the Den and other videos from this episode:

Name Dennis Fuller Pitching Golfers' Mate Investment Required £100,000 Equity Offered 12.5% Brief Description A 3 in 1 golf accessory that includes a pitch-mark repairer, ball marker, t-peg and sharpener
    Glossary terms:

    Dennis in the Den

Nerves cause many a pitch to falter but as Dennis Fuller proved that doesn't always lead to failure. Perseverance can bring rewards in the Den
Dennis makes three attempts to get his pitch underway but once in his stride, he talks with passion about his Golfers' Mate. Dennis says that the gadget will have a recommended retail price of less than £10 and that he hopes to sell 400,000 units in a year. He adds that there is a strong corporate interest in branding his product.
Deborah Meaden admits that she is not a golfer and asks Dennis questions about what the product does and how big the market is for products like this. Crucially she wants to know how much money she could get as a return from her investment. When Dennis admits to Deborah that he does not know how big the market is Deborah berates him adruptly declares herself out.
Duncan Bannatyne is equally dismayed by the entrepreneur's lack of market research and follows suit.
You' re the sort of bloke who I'd go for a drink with.
Theo takes a shine to Dennis

Theo Paphitis suggests that while the product is nice he wonders if it's enough to sustain a business. When he asks Dennis about his background, he finds out that he is the chairman of a six branch employment agency.
With a background in this sector, James Caan pursues Theo's line of inquiry and is impressed with how Dennis has managed to ride the tough current economic storm.
James asks Dennis if he has £100,000 of his own money to invest. Dennis admits he has but he wants the Dragons help as he is not a retailer or a marketeer and he believes the Dragons could help him in these key areas.
Peter Jones tells Dennis that he is a keen golfer but feels he could pick up a similar product for a pound. Dennis agrees that you can buy basic ones cheaply but Peter sticks his ground and declares himself out.
While clearly warming to Dennis, Theo dismisses the product as over-engineered and declares himself out.
With only James left, Dennis passionately tells the Dragon he is confident of selling 60,000 units in 23 weeks or 2,000 in a week. He also informs him that lucrative deals in the Republic of Ireland and Germany are about to be clinched. He also hopes to tap into the European and US markets in the next three years.
Impressed, James offers Dennis the full amount he wants for a 30% share.
Dennis comes back with a counter offer - he will do a deal with James for 25% of the business on the proviso that the Dragon allows him to buy back a 15% share of the original £100,000 in 12 months time. The deal will effectively give James 10% of Dennis's company for nothing.
James is keen on this and the duo shake hands on the deal.
The deal done in the Den:

James Caan: £100,000 for a 25% stake in Golfers' Mate on the proviso that the Dragon allows the entrepreneur to buy back a 15% share for the original £100,000 in 12 months time.

    Hi HB,

Here's my feedback. I've promoted/marketed a similar alignment guide sometime back in 2008 and travelled somewhat as a Rep on behalve of the manufacturer/inventor as well as went along on two main PGA tournament to "feel" how the visitors showing up responded.

More of a day giving out the items as freebies than selling 2B honest but at the end of the day, its not a bad flop, even though the owner/inventor has set aside half a million just to cover losses for the first 3 years despite careful marketing etc. but it was getting to be depressing. Free YES, but BUY... hmmm, "looks good but let me think it over"...etc is the common response for almost two years!

Yr aligner is smallish which is handy but there's the battery issue here unfortunately. Believe me, golfers have enough $$$$ as you and I know but when it comes to small change... its quite the opposite and they have no balls to admit it when buying or having to put up any hassle, nevertheless, it daunts also on the Retail chains when they start off with that lame argument as a drawback in order to gain a reduction for lowering the cost price further.

Its a shitty deal one might get to feel as you exit with a promise but no real commitment by the Retailer or regional importer etc...

They all wish to have it for FREE, not just one sample, they like you to beg for their consideration and then the magic disgusting suggestion, close to a decent consignment to head off investment costs by them as a risk factor they are looking at with your NEW invention.

Your best target is actually, the Golf Schools and courses where the instructors are for this is better appreciated with newbies like when they are hitting out at the range with practice strokes.

The real golfers don't really want to look at it, each has his own perception & style and they all think a world of themselves and their manner in positioning themselves for they have long passed that line with the basics... you see where I'm heading?

I looked up at the pricing, it is STIFF 2B honest even if you have added more than one laser. The beam is in fact playing a secondary role and there is the question too, about eyesight and vision involved here. Many golfers are actually specs-free when golfing and to focus intensely, or being made to be inclined to beam on the laser beam while positioning... that's a whole lot of extra stress for the pupils I'm sure of it.

Nonetheless, people change and complacency takes to another higher level and anything to fill the needed gap should be ventured and you found a loophole here on this too... among others who are also wringing their necks and brain cells with the midnight candle resolving better ways outside the green to perfect the demand with another new innovation.

I have a question and its not a critic but seriously, I'm equally curious if I want to scrutinize deeper when reading and taking word for word as a matter of interest. I copy paste the link on yr site pointing to the tab "About Us".

I bold it in red for you to provide the answer if you will. what additional services have you included? Where is the said "product catalog?"

Looking forward as well to your favorable reply and its good to see your product aiming positively to improve golfing as a whole....

Wish you luck with it mate , I think your gonna need it .

If the $100 figure is correct thats been mentioned its a hell of a lot of dough for a gadget for the training ground only . Sorry to say my guess would be a lot of those that did sell would soon end up in the local boot sale alongside the > perfect your putt machine > the magic wood/iron combi rescue club , etc .

Sorry mate only MY opinion , but you did ask .

Having said that wish you all the best

Golfers are known to spend heaps of money on anything which may help their game and I think this product is simple and easy enough to understand and to win orders.

Lets face it 100 bucks won't get you a round of golf on most decent golf courses on this planet.

I really think it may end up in every Korean's and Jap's golf bags in Asia but I do wonder about the legality about using it on the tee and to set yourself up for a drive.

Hillbilly, have you looked into this aspect?

That was exactly the point I was making LT infact I would,nt even begin a round in a competition with one in my bag ( if I had bought one ) as I said a device for the practice ground only ..

To make our laser US Govt compliant was one of biggest hoops to jump through! It is true that pen lasers are a dime a dozen, but as we have found out; there are a multitude of lasers.

As far as being legal on the PGA or LPGA circuit we are good to go. Maybe not during tournament play but certaintly during practice. As you can tell from our website we already have one PGA tour member endorsing our product and soon to have a couple of LPGA members. Trust me, the PGA has almost as many rules as the US Govt.

This idea might work and it may flop, but a guy has to try.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and comments thus far!

Hillbilly my friend just an update for you about the general state of play here in the UK .

Currently in the UK times are not good ,, people are cutting back on everything , and golf seems to be one of them getting hit pretty hard . Its not so much the buying of the gear its the running costs ie club membership , something the clubs cant do much about because they need the money back from the members to pay the long term investors who have built the club .

Yesterday I went along to the local car boot sale and I have never seen so many sets of golf clubs and equipment for sale , and they were nearly giving it away , example I bought a right hand graphite wedge and a left hand 8 iron for me and the wife to have a knock up the range with ,, I paid 50p per club ! about 24bht and the guy took these from sets ! I had a chat with several of the folk selling the clubs and it was the same ol story , can no longer afford the greenfees , and I am lucky enuf to live in a fairly affluent part of the UK with relativly good employment .

I,m not trying to be negative here mate , just trying to show you what its like on the ground here ,, mabe other parts of the world will paint hopefully a better pic for you , all the best Nigel
