Biaggi takes pole with new best lap time
    Saturday, 07 May 2011 15:17

Reigning champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing) reasserted himself at his home circuit of Monza with a spectacular display in Superpole qualifying, setting a lap of 1 minute 41.745 seconds to take his first pole position of the 2011 season.

Biaggi used a qualifying tyre to set his new best lap of the 5.777km circuit and an all time fastest lap average in WSBK history of 204.405kmph.

Second in Superpole was Eugene Laverty (Yamaha Superbike Racing Team) then Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) and Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) completed the front row, with four different bikes in the top four places.

Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike) won a last corner battle with his team-mate Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike) in the second 18-lap race at Monza but the bigger drama was the award of a ride-through penalty for long-time race leader Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia), for cutting a chicane in an incorrect fashion. He recovered to finish eighth.
Third was Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) but only after a massive fight with Pata Aprilia rider Noriyuki Haga, who went fourth.

In the championship standings Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) has 145 points, Melandri 118 and Biaggi 117. Laverty is now fifth.

    12 May 2011

The second round of the 2011 European Junior Cup took place under clear blue skies and high temperatures at Italy's legendary Monza circuit last weekend, and joined the other World Superbike championship races in producing a spectacular battle for the passionate crowd.

However Assen winner - Germany's Tom Busch, was determined to stick with the young Australian and broke from the pack in a bid to chase him down. North West 200

As the major lead up to the Isle of Man TT, Ireland's North West 200 circuit, in the North of Ulster, is a major event in the superbike road racing calendar.

From the first race in 1929, the North West 200’s first organisers could not have imagined how the event would grow over the years. In 1964, the North West 200 event was handed over to the Coleraine & District Motor Club which continues to run the event today.

In 2007, around two million people logged on from nearly every part of the world to watch what has become Ireland’s largest sporting event and one of the world’s fastest road races.

The course is made up almost entirely of public roads (A2, B185 & A29) but does include three speed reducing chicanes. The route, running anti-clockwise enters the outskirts of the towns passing many private houses. To help improve track safety street signs are removed at parts of the track and bales of hay are used to wrap the base of lampposts and telegraph poles. The circuit is 8.970 mi (14.436 km) long, with a distance of 8.834 mi (14.217 km) being covered on the first lap of every race.

North West 200 in 2011 - rain, bomb scare, oil spill

    North West 200 racing abandoned
    Saturday, 21 May 2011

Alastair Seeley in practice on his Superbike

The North West 200 was abandoned on Saturday with just one race being completed.

Heavy rain, a security alert and an oil spill caused delays which led to the decision to abandon the event at 1720 BST.

Carrickfergus rider Alastair Seeley was the only winner as he edged out Cameron Donald (Australia) in the Supersport 600 race.

Seeley was leading Michael Dunlop in the Superbike race when it was stopped after one lap because of an oil spill.

The oil came from Ryan Farquhar's machine and it resulted in the meeting ending prematurely despite efforts to clear it from a stretch of the circuit after Metropole.

"We worked and worked at it but it was a major spill," said race director Mervyn Whyte.

"The guys did a brilliant job and we thought we had cleared it, but the riders had concerns after two warm-up laps and we were not prepared to take the risk."

Seeley passed Australian Donald on the last lap of the Supersport race after a thrilling duel in wet conditions - Bruce Anstey (New Zealand) was well back in third.

The races were reduced from six to five laps because of the poor weather, with the riders having two 'sighting' laps before each race.

The first Superbike race was scheduled to open the programme but organisers decided to go with with the less powerful Supersport machines due to the conditions.

Seeley, Gary Johnson and Ryan Farquhar all held the lead on the opening lap.

Donald, seeking his first NW200 victory, made a poor start but moved quickly through the field and it became a showdown between the Wilson Graig Honda rider and Seeley in the final three laps.

The paddock area was evacuated during the security alert after the Supersport race.

Conditions deteriorated during the alert and led to pole position man Michael Rutter, team-mate Martin Jessopp and Guy Martin opting not to compete in the Superbike race, which was reduced to four laps.

Michael Dunlop took an early lead but he was soon joined by Seeley, who had moved ahead on the first lap when the oil spill led to the race being stopped.

The riders went out again on a two-lap warm-up but concerns over the oil spill brought an end to a disappointing day.

    Result: Supersport 600

    1. A Seeley average speed 107.97mph 2. C Donald 107.91 3. B Anstey 106.96 4. M Dunlop 106.32 5. G Johnson 106.18 6. W Dunlop 105.92

Carlos wins race one at Miller

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) won the first race of the day at Miller, in what was a clean sweep for Ducati in the opening 21-lap contest on a dry track. Effenbert - Liberty Racing Ducati pairing Jakub Smrz and Sylvain Guintoli filled the remaining podium places, in second and third respectively, with Leon Camier (Aprilia Alitalia) recovering from a mid-race hiccup to take fourth place away from Eugene Laverty and his Yamaha World Superbike machine.
Tom Sykes made a great final push to take sixth on his Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike machine. Satellite rider Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike) held off the challenge from official BMW rider Leon Haslam to finish seventh. Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) and Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) clashed on the opening lap, both riders ending up in the mud and on the DNF sheet.

Sixth win of 2011 for Carlos

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) took his second win of the day and his sixth of the year when he was victorious in race two at MMP, leading home the Aprilia Alitalia duo of Leon Camier and Max Biaggi with some degree of ease.
Fourth place went to Eugene Laverty and Yamaha, with Michel Fabrizio making a fine return from a race one fall to record fifth for Suzuki Alstare. Marco Melandri had an eventually lonely run to sixth on his Yamaha World Superbike machine. Guintoli, Smrz, Badovini and Sykes rounded out the top ten, with star names Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser not making the end of the race.

In the championship standings, Checa leads with 195 points, from Melandri on 134, Biaggi on 133 and Laverty on 109.

BRUCE ALMIGHTY: Bruce Anstey on his Padgetts Honda superbike at Quarterbridge

Flying Anstey sets pace in red-hot Superbikes
    4 June 2011

The action was red-hot during last night's final practice session ahead of today's opening six-lap Dainese TT Superbike race scheduled for a midday start with the fastest speed of the week recorded in the superbike class.

Kiwi Bruce Anstey was flying and laid down a marker to the rest of the field recording a final lap speed of 131.431mph, just 1.1 seconds outside the outright lap record for the 37-mile Mountain Circuit.

A happy Padgetts Honda rider said: "There was not too much traffic out there and the bike is going really well.

"We'll take it as it comes in the race and see where it takes us."

However, right on Anstey's tail last night was John McGuinness, Guy Martin and Michael Dunlop, all three also recording laps over 130mph, and within a few seconds of each other for what should make for an enthralling race today.

Any one of half a dozen riders are capable of stepping onto the top of the rostrum.

McGuinness (TT Legends Honda), 15 times a TT winner, cannot be discounted today and said after his second fastest lap last night of 130.615mph: "Conditions were great out there tonight, the bike felt real good and I was trying.

"The superbike is ready to race and I can't wait to get going in the race."

Relentless Suzuki by TAS rider Guy Martin, chasing his first TT win, was third fastest last night at 130.075mph and was as chirpy as ever after his lap saying: "It was a fair bit of fun out there tonight

    *****************
    That's an average speed of 211.517 km/h

    and for top speed:

    from the 2006 IOM TT:

In an indication of just how fast the Isle of Man TT really is, New Zealander Bruce Anstey set a new top speed record when he was clocked at 206mph (331.5 km/h) on the mile-long Sulby Straight during practice for the Superbike-class race. Anstey was aboard a race-modified GSXR-1000.

Just for reference, 206mph is basically the same as the highest speeds that have ever been recorded from World Superbike machines, and extremely close to that of MotoGP prototypes.

    **************

Anstey is also credited with the top speed in the Superstock class at 127.694mph from Donald and Michael Dunlop, with Guy Martin fourth.

Today’s Dainese Superbike race will be held over six laps and is scheduled for a 12 noon start

    Shaun Harris

IOM - would like to go there 'one day'. I know two riders from my little hometown of New Plymouth who've ridden there, Shaun Harris started racing there in 1991 and won twice, plus two other top-three finishes, before almost dying in an accident in 2006 that ended his racing career.
The second one Mike King crashed in practice, lucky to make it home alive very serious injuries, so never actually got to race there.

    IOM Dainese Superbike TT

Saturday’s Dainese Superbike TT, the opening race of the 2011 Isle of Man TT

John McGuinnness has admitted he thought he’d never win another big bike TT race after failing to take a single podium place during last year’s event.

However, the Morecambe star returned to form in stunning style during Saturday’s Dainese Superbike TT, the opening race of the 2011 Isle of Man TT fuelled by Monster Energy.

McGuiness said: "I'm speechless really and it's unbelievable to be sitting here now with another Superbike win to my name, for some reason I never thought I'd do it.”

The Honda TT Legend star enjoyed an early battle with Padgetts Honda racer Bruce Anstey until the Kiwi retired on lap three of the six-lap race. McGuinness continued to take the chequered flag by 56 seconds for his 16th TT win.

    Final placings:

    1 1 John McGuinness 999cc Honda
    2 6 Cameron Donald 1000cc Honda
    3 11 Gary Johnson 1000cc Honda
    4 2 Keith Amor 999cc Honda
    5 9 Michael Dunlop 1000cc Kawasaki

For McGuiiness - average lap speed was 127.870mph (205.786 km/h)

The fastest lap in practice was Bruce Anstey at 131.431 mph (211.517)

I.O.M. Senior TT - Shaun Harris at Ballaugh Bridge

back to Shaun Harris, he also rode the Britten (Britten V1000) at IOM:

Britten Motorcycles at The Isle of Man TT

Britten motorcycles competed at the IOM TT in 1993, 1994 and 1996, as well as being ridden by Hugh Anderson in the Parade of Champions in 2005.

Although there were high hopes for the Brittens to perform well, they were plagued by mechanical problems.

At the first race outing in 1993, with minimal practice, Shaun Harris set the official Senior TT race speed record on the Britten at 165mph on the start-finish straight. It is believed that he attained speeds of 187 mph during the race and on the last lap was forced to retire with mechanical problems.

A three bike campaign was mounted in 1994, with the riders being Nick Jefferies, Mark Farmer (Ireland) and Jason McEwen. [10] Nick Jefferies had performed well on the Britten at the 1994 North West 200 in Northern Ireland, just prior to the IOM TT, attaining seventh place. However, the IOM TT campaign was marred with the death of Mark Farmer in practice when he crashed the Britten at Black Dub. The Britten campaign ended with only one bike, ridden by Jefferies, racing in both the Formula One and Senior TT, but failing to finish in either race due to mechanical problems.

In 1996, the very experienced IOM TT Kiwi rider, Shaun Harris returned to race a Britten competitively for the last time. Keeping the engine operating below 10,000 RPM to ensure finishing the race, the Britten attained 33rd place in the Senior TT, in a race where 48 of the 84 entrants retired with mechanical problems.

The high level of mechanical failure in the TT races highlights the adverse effects of high speed, rough road surfaces and long distance races.
