How cool was it to see Rossi make it to the podium only seven weeks after a compound fracture of his leg? The guy is amazing- he's gonna be a terror on a Ducati next season.

I wish Hayden could remember how to do it...

thanks for posting; it was a lot less interesting without Rossi, while we can't win this year (would take a lot of bad luck for Lorenzo) he's showing what a true champion he is racing so soon when really he has little to gain, and the risk of another accident on that leg - ouch!

And 10 weeks till MotoGP at Sepang, October 10.

The Fiat Yamaha rider has had an almost flawless season at the halfway point of the 2010 campaign. Leader of the Championship the 23 year-old has demonstrated a consistency in the first nine races that has made him the favourite for the title.

Smooth like butter, rhythmic like a hammer. This has been the mantra of Jorge Lorenzo in 2010 – one even displayed on his brake levers – and it has been evident. The young Spaniard has been smooth and consistent in the nine rounds so far, taking six victories and finishing second on the three occasions that a win has not been possible. Added to that five poles and 210 points from a possible 225 and Lorenzo’s season until now has been almost perfect.
The Fiat Yamaha rider has taken a huge step, not only in the quality of his riding but also in his approach to races. Lorenzo has learned to read races differently, knowing when to strike for victory when the circumstances permit but also being aware that second place on the occasions that his rivals have the upper hand is better than a fall.
Looking back to the start of the season makes Lorenzo’s achievements so far all the more impressive, given the fact he started the campaign still carrying the effects of a pre-season training injury which meant he arrived in Qatar for round one far from being in his best physical shape. Second place under the floodlights was therefore a highly impressive outcome.
The following race at Jerez saw the best of Lorenzo, as his hunger for a first premier class win on home soil saw him recover an advantage built up in the race by rival Dani Pedrosa to overcome his fellow Spaniard and win. After his first victory of the season Lorenzo used the one-day test to practice his starts, and it paid off. Victory at Le Mans in the next round followed (his first back-to-back premier class wins), before second place at Mugello behind Pedrosa. There then followed three consecutive wins: Silverstone, Assen and Catalunya. Second at Sachsenring was next as he accepted more valuable points with Pedrosa winning, and a win at Laguna Seca completed a phenomenal first half of the season for the Mallorcan.
Lorenzo has already built up one of the best records in history in terms of win and points percentage. With a 72-point advantage over Pedrosa and 95 over Andrea Dovizioso in the race for the 2010 title, a similar second half to Lorenzo’s season would surely secure a first MotoGP World Championship title for the Spaniar

The Repsol Honda rider has had highs and lows packed into his first nine races, with the nature of his better results hinting at his capacity to be the main challenger to Jorge Lorenzo in the battle for this year’s title.

Dani Pedrosa’s steady progress towards consistent results this season has placed the Spaniard second in the Championship standings at the halfway point in the season, where at 138 points he currently sits 72 off leader Jorge Lorenzo. The first nine rounds have produced some fantastic results for the Repsol Honda rider who has so far stood on the podium five times, winning twice, and his finer outcomes have been accompanied by some frustrations too.
The campaign got off to an indifferent start for Pedrosa with seventh in Qatar, where he battled with set-up issues that had carried over from pre-season. Undeterred however he remained focused and the following round at Jerez produced a solid reward, as he took pole position and battled with Lorenzo for the victory before finishing second.
The inconsistency which was to prove Pedrosa’s main obstacle in the early part of the season meant that he would place fifth at Le Mans as he lost out on a podium finish on the final lap in his 150th GP start. Another strong response came though and this time it was a victory, from pole position, at Mugello as the intense work put in by the 24 year-old and his team paid off.
A difficult next round at Silverstone followed where Pedrosa crashed in qualifying and placed eighth in the race, but a succession of constant results that produced the continuity he had been striving for then poured forth. Second place at Assen from seventh on the grid and then second in his home race at Catalunya paved the way to a second win of 2010 at Sachsenring, where Pedrosa won a fight with Lorenzo for victory.
The first half of the campaign was rounded off with a first DNF of the season as Pedrosa crashed out at Laguna Seca whilst leading the race, but he remained optimistic despite the setback as he aims to continue harnessing the aspects of his performance that have delivered him tastes of victory already.

Since the launch of the MotoGP Hall of Fame in 2000, a series of riders who have each been key protagonists throughout more than half a century of Grand Prix racing have been inducted as MotoGP Legends. THE MODERN AGE

Before the revision of regulations which brought about the move to 990cc 4-stroke competition in the premier class - in line with modern engineering and production trends - a young Italian rider called Valentino Rossi took the last ever 500cc title in 2001 on Honda machinery, having won the 1997 edition of the 125cc championship and the 1999 quarter litre crown with Aprilia.
After the re-branding of the World Championship as MotoGP in 2002 and the introduction of 990cc racing, Rossi went on to win four further consecutive titles, two with Honda and two after a sensational move to Yamaha.
In recent seasons the lower cylinder categories have been ruled by young European riders preparing for MotoGP on Aprilia and Honda bikes, with Dani Perdosa epitomising the trend with three successive titles – one in 125 in 2003 followed by two in 250 – riding for Honda before moving into the premier class. In his first season in MotoGP Pedrosa shared the Repsol Honda pit-box with American rider Nicky Hayden, whose aggressive but consistent riding earned him the 2006 title and ended Rossi’s annual procession to glory.
At the start of the 2007 season, new rules restricting the number of tyres used on Grand Prix weekends and a reduction in engine size from 990cc to 800cc again levelled the playing field in MotoGP – with Bridgestone-equipped Ducati Marlboro rider Casey Stoner emerging as the first standout rider of the new era, as the runaway 2007 World Champion. In 2008, however, Rossi returned to the pinnacle, taking his sixth premier class title, with Stoner a distant runner-up in the standings.
The 2009 season saw the introduction of a single-tyre rule, as Bridgestone were named the sole suppliers for the MotoGP class. Rossi took his seventh title in the premier class after a battle with team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, taking him to within one more of equalling Giacomo Agostini’s all-time record of eight.

It's an odd list, a real mix of eras, bikes and competition.

I read a biography on Barry Sheene, so often it was mechanical breakdown - or not having mechanical breakdown - that decided who won the titles the bikes were less than reliable.

And they were often travelling around with their girlfriend living in a van with a tent, driving themselves between circuits - a long way from the wealth and luxury of today.

Jeremy Burgess rossi's chief engineer used to cruise around with his mate, a van and a bag of spanners in the early days, you would have to be very dedicated it goes to show put int the effort and sometimes you get the results.

A winning start, a horrendous injury and a phenomenal return to action well ahead of schedule… and all by the halfway point of the season. This is the reigning World Champion’s 2010 campaign to date.

Nobody ever expects Valentino Rossi’s season to be without its fair share of pivotal moments, but the first half of the reigning World Champion’s 2010 campaign must go down as one of the most eventful of his illustrious career to date. Victory in round one, despair in injury and a highly impressive return to action have all been packed into the opening nine rounds by the 31 year-old Italian.
Starting the defence of his title with a win in Qatar Rossi began his quest for an eighth premier class title in the perfect manner, but a motocross training accident shortly after resulted in an injured shoulder which was to continue troubling him for some time. Pain proved no insurmountable obstacle however and third place at Jerez in the next round proved Rossi’s determination. Second place behind team-mate Jorge Lorenzo at Le Mans in round three maintained his solid start as another intense battle between the pair formed early in the campaign.
Eager to secure a second win of the season in his home race at Mugello disaster struck in the second practice session as a crash resulted in a fractured right tibia and fibula, an injury which was to rule Rossi out for four races, a considerably shorter period than had first been suggested. It also brought to an end his record breaking run of 230 successive Grand Prix starts, having never missed a race since his World Championship debut in 1996.
Back on two wheels a little over four weeks after the injury Rossi tested a superbike at Misano at the start of July, and a few days later a second day at Brno led to a decision by the rider and his Fiat Yamaha team to attempt a comeback at Sachsenring. Just six weeks after breaking his leg The Doctor rode to fourth position in the race, losing out on a podium spot only on the final corner of the last lap.
Completing a remarkable comeback Rossi placed third in the next race at Laguna Seca, refusing to hold back in his effort to get his campaign back on course. Fifth in the standings on 90 points, some 120 off leader Lorenzo, the title looks beyond his grasp in 2010 but few would be surprised if Rossi mounted an impressive attempt at recovering lost ground over the remaining nine rounds.

After a three-week mid-season break the 2010 MotoGP World Championship returns to action with the Cardion ab Grand Prix this weekend, round ten on the calendar.

Refreshed and ready to take on the second half of the 2010 season the MotoGP riders and teams are back in action this weekend at Brno for the Cardion ab Grand Prix Czech Republic, where the chase to catch Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo recommences.
After nine of the 18 rounds of the season the Fiat Yamaha rider is 72 points clear at the top of the standings, thanks to his superb form of having taken six wins and three second places so far. Another top-two finish would make Lorenzo only the third rider in GP racing’s 62-year history to place either first or second in the opening ten races of a season, the others being Giacomo Agostini and Mick Doohan. To maintain his fantastic form Lorenzo will need to win at a circuit he has not yet triumphed at in the premier class, after crashing last year when battling team-mate Valentino Rossi for the race lead. He does have a fine record in the smaller classes there however.
Dani Pedrosa is the closest to Lorenzo in the standings at present and the Repsol Honda rider has a point to prove following his crash at Laguna Seca in the previous round. The Spaniard enjoyed a consistent run leading up to the summer interval and was leading the race in the U.S. when he fell, and has twice finished on the podium at Brno including second place last year – his best premier class Brno result.
In third place at 23 points off his team-mate is Andrea Dovizioso, who is eager to rediscover his early-season podium form, whilst the resurgent Casey Stoner (Ducati Team) is hot on the Italian’s tail. Stoner did not race at Brno last season but has tasted victory there (in 2007), something he is still yet to do in 2010 but a result that appears to be moving ever closer after four successive podium finishes in the last four rounds.
Brno has been a very fruitful hunting ground for Valentino Rossi who has five premier class wins there (it was also the site of his first 125cc win), and the Italian has been victorious at the Czech track for the last two years. A podium last time out at Laguna in only his second race back from injury moved him back up to fifth, where he sits a single point ahead of Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team). Another American rider, Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) is also closing in on the top five and Brno offers a familiar circuit for the rookie, who has previously ridden there in WSBK.
Set to make an extremely speedy and very welcome return to action from his broken leg is Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda). Pending medical clearance the Frenchman intends to ride again just four weeks after his crash at Sachsenring – last year he rode to tenth place at Brno having broken his ankle just three weeks before the race.
San Carlo Honda Gresini pair Marco Melandri and Marco Simoncelli are closely matched in ninth and tenth in the standings, whilst Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) will follow up his best result of 2010 so far with an attempt to place higher than seventh. Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar), Rizla Suzuki pair Loris Capirossi and Álvaro Bautista, and Pramac racing duo Mika Kallio and Aleix Espargaró will all aim for improvements, and Alex de Angelis (Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team) is set to continue in place of the injured Hiroshi Aoyama.
The first MotoGP practice session of the Cardion ab Grand Prix Czech Republic starts at 1.55pm local time on Friday.

The first half of the 2010 season could not have gone much better for Jorge Lorenzo, who won six of the opening nine races and placed second in the remaining three. That phenomenal form has given the Fiat Yamaha rider a substantial 72-point lead in the World Championship standings at the midway point of the campaign, and after a three-week summer break he will now continue his bid for a debut MotoGP World title at Brno this weekend.
"The holidays were perfect… ten days in the Caribbean for rest and fun, recharging the batteries for the second half of the season. I needed it because the calendar has been busy in the last month and now I can focus on the rest of the season,” explained Lorenzo, who now heads to a track he has won on in both the 125cc and 250cc classes but is still yet to take victory at in the elite category.
“We are going to Brno, a track I like and where I've won three times, but never in MotoGP. I haven't even got a podium here and this is my challenge, my first podium in the second part of the season and in Brno,” explained Lorenzo, who became the first rider since Valentino Rossi in 2002 to finish inside the top two in the first nine MotoGP races of the season with victory last time out at Laguna Seca.
Following the race on Sunday Lorenzo and his Fiat Yamaha team will work on the Spaniard’s M1 machine during the one-day test, to further improve what has proven to be a fantastic package so far this season.
“After the race I will stay in Brno to try something new on the bike, something to improve our bike until the end of Championship. It’s a good place to restart!" he added

Seven-time world MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi on Sunday (15 August) signed a two-year deal to race with Ducati, the team announced.

Italy's Valentino Rossi competes during the qualifying session of the MotoGP event as part of the Czech Grand Prix in Brno on August 14. Rossi on Sunday signed a two-year deal to race with Ducati, the team announced.

Yamaha rider Rossi will replace Australia's former world champion Casey Stoner, who will race for Honda next season after four years with the Italian team.

Rossi said he was looking ahead to a new challenge after seven years with the Japanese manufacturers.

"The time has come for me to find new challenges; my work with Yamaha is now finished," he said.

"Sadly, even the most beautiful love stories come to an end, but they leave marvellous memories."

Rossi, 31, finished fifth in Sunday's Czech Grand Prix, but his chances of retaining his world title had already been compromised when he missed six weeks of the season after breaking his leg at Mugello.

"We are delighted to announce that Valentino Rossi will be with us from 2011," said Ducati president Gabriele Del Torchio.

"He is a paragon of excellence in the world of motorcycling."
