Marc Marquez reaching the greatest of heights
Newly re-crowned world motorcycle champion Marc Marquez is well on his way to becoming the greatest rider in MotoGP history.
Marquez, 21, has already set the mark for the youngest winner of the world title in two-wheeled racing's premier class, and can add another record to his growing list of achievements if he wins the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island on Sunday.
It would be the Spanish sensation's 12th win this year, breaking his tie with Italian legend Valentino Rossi for the most wins in a season.
Marquez clinched his second-straight MotoGP crown by finishing second to his world champion predecessor Jorge Lorenzo in last Sunday's Japanese GP at Motegi.
On top of his crushing domination this season, what is remarkable about securing back-to-back titles is that Marquez has done it in his first two years in MotoGP.
Add his junior world championships in the 125cc class (now Moto3) in 2010 and Moto2 in 2012, and he is more than halfway to matching Rossi's nine titles and could ultimately threaten Italian all-time great Giacomo Agostini's record 15 crowns across multiple categories.
Marquez is in a very different era to Agostini's peak in the mid-1960s to mid-'70s, when he dominated the old 350cc and 500cc titles mainly on MV Agustas, and it will be much more difficult for him to accumulate 11 more MotoGP crowns.
But Rossi's modern-age achievement is reachable or even surpassable, especially for such a precocious talent as Marquez. Having clinched this year's title, though, his immediate goal is to win his first Australian GP and then attempt to finish his banner year with victories in the final two races in Malaysia next Sunday and Valencia next month.
Marquez signalled his intentions at Phillip Island in qualifying on Saturday, securing pole position on his Honda RC213V for Sunday's 27-lap, 120-kilometre main race.
The fast 4.4-kilometre ocean-side circuit was formerly the domain of Australia's double MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner, who won a record six times on the island before his retirement at the end of 2012.
It may be possible for Marquez to reach or surpass Rossi's number of world championships if things stay as they are at the moment, however the fly in the ointment of doing this is that his younger brother will eventually join him in the Motogp class and he is going to be a serious contender for the title himself. Marc Marquez himself states that his brother is a better rider than him.
And the young aussie miller he moves up next year if he gets a good bike could be a big chance.
^ No Miller is going to one of the sattelite teams, not sure which one,
Australian rider Jack Miller has won the Australian Moto3 Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
Australian rider Jack Miller has surged through the field to win the Australian Moto3 Grand Prix.
Spending most of the race duelling for top position with title rival Alex Marquez, Miller made a decisive move on Doohan corner of the final lap of the race to win his home race.
The victory keeps alive his hopes of claiming a Moto3 crown, though Marquez's second place position means the advantage gained is slight.
Good ride from the kid he goes to lcr honda next year,it wont take him long to get into a top team.
Australia's Jack Miller signs historic MotoGP deal at age of 19 Rider is first to skip Moto2 for MotoGP Will join LCR Honda
Teenager Jack Miller will fly the flag for Australia in MotoGP next year after signing a historic deal with LCR Honda.
The 19-year-old, who currently leads the Moto3 world championship, will become the first rider to skip Moto2 and graduate straight into the premier class. He will ride a Honda RC213V-RS Open Specification bike alongside experienced Briton Cal Crutchlow.
Speculation that elite series giant Honda would recruit the talented Queenslander had been mounting in the lead up to Thursday’s announcement. Miller has been a revelation this season, winning four from 13 races in the smallest grand prix class for a nine-point lead on the overall Moto3 standings.
“It’s a dream come true,” he said of the deal. “I think that every rider would like to race at the highest level in the world championship with a Honda.
“It is certainly a big jump from Moto3 to MotoGP, but I am convinced that we are ready and that, step-by-step, learning every day, we can do a great job.”
Miller is following a similar path to fellow Australian and two-time world champion Casey Stoner, who also rode for the Red Bull KTM Ajo team before making his MotoGP debut with LCR Honda in 2006.
