Bangkok International 10s promises festive rugby
Published: 16/02/2009 at 12:00 AM Newspaper section: SportsA total of 32 teams will take part in the Raimon Land Bangkok International Rugby 10s which will be held at Bangkok Pattana School this coming weekend.
Regarded as one of the best 10s tournaments in the world, it has attracted teams from around the globe.
Among the teams are last year's Cup champions the South Africa-based Jam Boys captained by World Cup legend Bobby Skinstad who was with the Springboks during their World Cup winning campaign.
It is expected that the Jam Boys will be pushed this year by the New Zealand Legends who are also bringing in some big names for the tournament.
Other international teams will be coming from China and Sri Lanka.
Thailand will be represented by teams from Phuket, Pattaya and the provinces while as always there will be a strong representation from leading clubs in Bangkok.
Tournament chairman Eddie Evans is delighted that the tournament is as strong as ever despite the tough economic times.
"It's very exciting to see the amount of interest in the tournament this year," said Evans. "I guess the secret is out on what is an awesome tournament and teams are now just lining up to get in."
The tournament has attracted good crowds in the past who have appreciated the high standard of rugby.
"We are hoping for a big turnout from the Bangkok rugby community keen to enjoy a great day watching exciting rugby and experiencing the tournament atmosphere - which we hope will be a big festive party." said Evans. "It will be a great tournament for both rugby fans and also for those just looking for a fun way to spend the weekend."
Pool games will be played on Saturday 21st and the finals on Sunday 22nd from 11am to 6pm.
Saturday's action will kick off at 9am with the Pre Mini youth tournament.
