Four years of glory or world cup?

If you had the choice, would you rather your team had four years of winning or to take home a world cup?

Four years of slaughtering the Aussies in the Ashes, or a cricket world cup?
Four years of Euro championships/F.A cups, or the poofball world cup?
Four years of humbling the All Blacks in the Bledisloe, or the WC?
Four years of winning the world series, or... um... whatever the Yanks play for.

Honestly, the four years of glory. World Cups are great but at the end of the day all they really are is a measure of who did best in a particular tournament (usually knock-out at that) which is not always the same as being the best team.

Hmmm... I wonder why the Kiwis are juxtaposed to the rest of the rugby world on this matter...?

That would be a wonderful dream, to win and then retain the ashes 3 times.

As much as I'd like to claim to speak for the entirity of New Zealand I highly doubt I do.

If it came down to a choice of being knocked-out of a tournament once every 4yrs but winning most everything else in-between or winning the tournament and being mediocre before and after it then I'd always take the former.

    2 different sports, so irrelevant.

Of course you would, you don't have a sports culture that emphasises a single event being the pinnacle of sporting achievement, such as the Olympics or Footy WC like we do in Europe.

NZ competes in the Olympics you know, rather well at that.

Anyways it's an odd way to emphasise the pinnacle in my opinion. I'm pretty sure, for example, that the best team in the world doesn't always win the Footy WC. It's like playing my mate back home in 10 games of pool, losing 9 of them, and claiming the 10th victorious one as the definative measure.

Usually, but not always. But, they have to beat the best to win it and that's what makes it special.

No. It's nothing like that. You can't win a WC if you only win one match. Has Stroller got your password or summit?

But not always; what if the 'best' is on the other side of the draw and gets knocked out? For a rugby example look at 2003 where England and NZ were clearly the two best teams going in - England won without facing NZ.

Actually '07 is an even better example. Not even the staunchest England supporter would've thought they were the 2nd best team in the world going into the tournament.

I totally agree. That's why the win over Australia was so sweet.

If you ever get to win the WC (pro era) I'm sure you'll see things differently.

World cup, England football; I don't want to die without seeing us lift that cup but inevitably will

World Cup, Rugby - would love to see Wales lift that cup for such a small nation

    It's tough being half Welsh/English

No denying it would be great but it wouldn't change my perspective on things - all it means is that we'd won a knock-out tournament.

And before I forget, we had the 4 years of glory too, before the '03 WC, but beating everyone in every competition was nothing compared to winning the WC for my and most other Poms I know.

Fair enough. You've yet to beat NZ at a WC though.

I care about my club. It's the only thing that matters.

I'm staying in tonight to listen/watch the 4th round Scottish Cup derby against Hibs. Total commitment to the cause.

Fuck international sport of any kind. Total tosswank.

Yeah, I'd probably feel that way too if I were Scottish.

Ahh nothing quite like the 'world view' of provincialism, eh Tud.
