IPL auction record as Pat Cummins earns $3.17m pay day from Kolkata Knight Riders

    Cricket scores around the world-11727042-3x2-700x467-jpg

Pat Cummins's status as the number-ranked bowler in Test cricket has helped him pick up the biggest IPL cheque ever handed out to an overseas player.

    Key points:
    • Pat Cummins's auction value of $3.17 million was greater than that of Englishman Ben Stokes in 2017
    • Glenn Maxwell was auctioned for $2.2 million and will join Kings XI Punjab
    • Chris Lynn made his reserve price of $410,000, a salary cut of $1.4 million from his deal last year

Thursday's IPL auction saw the Australian quick signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for $3.17 million, eclipsing the $3 million fee Rajasthan Royals forked out for England superstar Ben Stokes in 2017.

Cummins's services were subject to a tug-of-war between Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Capitals, before Kolkata swooped in to snare the New South Wales quick.

    ---

    I heard a report that, at $3.17 mil ... that about $10,000 a ball
    .
A sign of the times. Guess it demonstrates just how much money these franchise teams pull in.

I'm betting players from an era gone by are wishing there were born in this generation. Many players from the 70s, 80s and even 90s had to hold down jobs at the same time they were representing their countries.

Pat Cummins is definately a match winning player though. He is unique in that he bowls wicket taking express pace, and so tight he does not go for many runs at all.

^ of course, and you are prolly right re: another one sided flogging. Really hope we can get a good match. The curators have apparently been trying to present a pitch that will offer some competition - let's hope so.

Little bit 'good cricket' starved after all of the one sided affairs of late in Australian test cricket.

Just watched the highlights of one of the best ashes series of all time, and one which i have fond memories of watching when I was living in BKK back in 2005.

This one was one the best test matches in history

    Second Test Preview

The Kiwis will have to quickly settle any nerves on the massive MCG stage in front of an anticipated 85,000+ fans on day 1, as they strive to avoid going down 0-2 in a three-test series.
With a seemingly inferior batting (and spinning) depth, the Black Caps will place a heavy reliance upon their top-end talent.

A Kiwi nation’s eyes will turn to skipper Kane Williamson and leading bowling charge Trent Boult to play massive leading hands this Test.
Bowlers Tim Southee and Neil Wagner took 16 wickets between them in Perth, after instigating a ‘bumper war’ against the hosts. However they bowled over 111 overs between them in energy-sapping heat, which will test their fitness.

The Australian batting woes of the Ashes (Steve Smith an historic aside) have been quickly forgotten and their top-6 is now looking rock solid.

Some subtle but profoundly effective ‘tweaks’ to the bowling action of Mitchell Starc this summer have yielded immediate effects. After wreaking havoc in a few pre-Test Shield games, the 29yo left arm swing bowler has already taken 23 wickets in 3 Australian Tests this summer.

With strong bowling depth, even with Hazlewood sidelined and the ‘GOAT’ Nathan Lyon offering valuable support, the Aussie bowling unit has looked ultra-impressive.
James Pattinson also has an impressive Test record against the Kiwis, with 20 wickets from 3 Tests at a miserly 17.70 apiece.
I reckon Smith will appreciate the return to the red ball and will bag 50 + in both innings and hopefully a ton in one of them

Cloudy start here in Melbourne, but not cloudy enough to warrant the floodlights to be employed.

Plenty of excitement around the ground, with lots of New Zealand supporters milling around the city on a hunt for a post-Christmas Day coffee. There's a fair few milling around the ground as well waiting for the gates to open.

Lots of talk about the pitch in the build up, and that's the sole topic of conversation in the press box as well. The sense is that with the amount of grass that's evident even from up here, it will favour the Kiwi bowlers a lot more than the surface in Perth did.

However, this most heavily scrutinised 22 yards of turf is very much a unknown quantity and is likely to throw up a couple of surprises when the teams eventually get a crack at bowling on it.

    EDIT ...

Apparently the pitch is a little grassy

    NEW ZEALAND WINS THE TOSS
And they are going to have a bowl, the absolute weapons. The returning Trent Boult will be licking his lips at the grass on offer, while Tom Blundell is the other change for New Zealand, the opener replacing Jeet Raval.

Holy cow there's some swing and carry going on here. Might settle down once the shine comes off the ball but there's a feeling that a wicket could go pretty much every ball right now..

^ Agreed HW ... great start to a Test Match.

The balls are swinging more then a LadyBoy strutting her wares on Beach Road

    (AAP: Michael Dodge)

Burns out first ball faced ... brilliant delivery and he left the gate open and got bowled 2/3rds up Middle Stump

    ---

So, the big silverback (KW)is at the game ... where's Wally?

^What a first-up ball Burns got served though, one for the highlight reels and pretty much unplayable. Not just an early wicket, but a confidence buster as the Aussies in the sheds would have collectively thought *oh fuck*...

There is a massive crowd in the MCG for this first day - but still some gaps around the periphery of the vertiginous grandstands at the sides of the ground.

The pitch appears to have settled down with the 40-over old ball softening enough to remove any real threat.
New Zealand are largely bowling to contain at the moment and hope for that breakthrough.

They've done well to largely restrict the scoring shots from this flamboyant pair, but the longer these two are out in the middle, the worse it will be for the tourists.

^ I hate Anderson, absolute dick.
Have to admit though, he has been around for a long time now - as he bowls so well at home.
His away record is poor however - gets knocked around the park in Australia, which makes him so stroppy he just looks like a big dick..

Kiwis in more shit than a Werribee duck,8/117-350 behind.
NZ must have a 4 day working week because the their cricketers don't seem able to play past that or even come close to it.
Latham had a good 50 though.

The nightmare just gets worse for the Kiwis..

Trent Boult breaks hand in Boxing Day Test

New Zealand’s Boxing Day Test has turned into a disaster with a perilous on-field position made worse by seam bowler Trent Boult breaking his hand.
The left-arm opening bowler was hit on the right hand by a Mitchell Starc delivery while batting on Saturday during the Black Caps’ first innings against Australia at the MCG.

The Kiwis have confirmed Boult will miss the third and final Test from Friday at the SCG, flying home to New Zealand after the end of the Melbourne match.

    Going to be another drubbing.

    *yawn*

Australia's bowling is leaps and bounds ahead - and the Kiwi batsmen just haven't stepped up .

Peter Siddle retires from international cricket after 67 Tests and 221 wickets

Indefatigable Australian seamer was part of the team that whitewashed England in 2013-14 and is the last Australian to take a Test hat-trick

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...ts-221-wickets

A good decision. It will stop the selectors pissing in his pocket by adding him to the squad, when there is a very slim chance of him getting picked. Let him make some $$$ in T20 while he still can.... thanks Sidds! - you filled the gap when we needed you, but it's time for you to move on ...

Pakistan’s average total was 277 compared to just 161 for New Zealand to date.
The Pakistani batsmen put up a better fight than the dismal Kiwi batsmen. All the talk about them being the best team to tour Australia in decades was nothing but talk.

Really disappointed about the lack of fight our retarded cousins have put up ..
