Although India are historically terrible when playing away from home this English side look strong.

All they need is replace Cook and Broad with younger players and get the kiwi criminal back and it then is a complete team that can beat anyone.

I wish I was so positive.

Batting is brittle, and Jimmy is going to leave a massive hole.

Yep Jimmy is bowling beautifully at the moment just like a lot of fast bowlers nearing the end of their career.

That is why they need to replace Broad with a new young bowler to benefit from the experience Anderson can provide playing next to him.

Broad said he's been told that he and Jimmy shouldn't expect to play every game by the selectors at the start of the summer.

Though it looks like Jimmy might.

    Olly Stone is pretty handy.

From the start of the season...

Anyway, the batting is a far greater concern.

Did England leave it too long before declaring? I think any play today was a bonus and getting 2 wickets before the rain arrived should be enough if the weather holds for 3 sessions tomorrow.

I didn't follow the game after lunch. Just didn't think there would be any further play but managed to see the end after Dad called. Conditions favoured England throughout but it's still a great result. Good to see Woakes get that century and Anderson get 9 wickets in the match.

    Thanks for keeping us updated.

It's like the text updates on the BBC when Tristram from Godalming mentions how his final exams are going.

Jimmy now has 100 test wickets at Lord's. His last 25 at an average of...12

    It's squeaky bum time.

The jury in the trial of cricketer Ben Stokes will start deliberations on Tuesday after the judge finished summing up the case.
The 27-year-old - along with Ryan Ali, 28 - both deny a charge of affray after an incident outside Bristol nightclub Mbargo on 25 September.
Judge Peter Blair QC summed up the case on Monday afternoon and sent the jury home for the day.
They will start deliberations at 10am on Tuesday.

    NOT GUILTY.

And frankly the claim that he had been very drunk after only ten drinks was a scandalous accusation.

England cricket star Ben Stokes not guilty of affray

The all-rounder was charged after brawling with two nightclub revellers in Bristol city centre hours after he played for England.

England cricketer Ben Stokes has been found not guilty of affray following a brawl with two nightclub revellers.

The 27-year-old all-rounder punched Ryan Hale, 27, to the ground and then knocked out Ryan Ali, 28, during the fracas in the early hours of September 25 last year in Bristol city centre.

Stokes said he was acting in self-defence, or in the defence of others, when he punched the two best friends hours after England played the West Indies in a one-day international in the city.

The jury at Bristol Crown Court took under three hours to acquit Stokes and co-accused Ali of affray following a seven day trial.

At the start of the trial the Crown tried to amend the indictment and charge Stokes with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm but this was rejected by the judge.

And half way through the trial Stokes’s legal team attempted to have the case against him dropped but this was also refused by the judge.

Stokes missed the second Test against India at Lords and was not included in the squad for the third Test, beginning on Saturday at Trent Bridge, because of the on-going court proceedings.

The court heard how the night began with Stokes and other England players, including James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Plunkett, Jake Ball and Alex Hales, taking taxis into Bristol city centre.

Stokes had had “at least 10 drinks” in the hours before the incident, which included a bottle of beer, two or three pints of lager, five or six vodka and lemonades and some Jagerbombs.

He was accused of being “actually really very drunk”.

Meanwhile Ali had drunk six or seven Jack Daniels and Cokes during his night out with Mr Hale.

Much of the incident and the build-up was captured on CCTV cameras located around the Clifton Triangle area – a popular nightspot in Bristol.

Mbargo doorman Andrew Cunningham, 37, alleged he was offered £300 by Stokes to let him and Mr Hales back into the nightclub.
Mr Cunningham accused Stokes of getting “verbally abusive” saying he had “s***t tattoos” and that his gold teeth made him look like a “c***”.

He said Stokes was mimicking the mannerisms and voices of two gay men, William O’Connor and Kai Barry, outside the club but the cricketer insisted they were exchanging “banter” about his expensive white leather shoes.

Stokes said he could not remember flicking his cigarette butt towards the gay men or directing a V-sign at Mr Cunningham.

The two cricketers left Mbargo and were looking for a casino when the violence erupted shortly after 2.30am in Queen’s Road.

Both Stokes and Ali claim they were acting in self-defence and blamed each other for being the aggressor.

Stokes maintained he heard best friends Ali and Mr Hale direct homophobic abuse at Mr O’Connor and Mr Barry – but was unable to say what those words were.

And when he intervened, telling the pair: “You shouldn’t be taking the piss because they are gay,” Stokes said Ali replied: “Shut the f*** up or I’ll bottle you.”

He described his co-accused as “aggressive and violent” towards himself, Mr Hales, Mr Barry and Mr O’Connor and denied he had “overexaggerated the exchange” in order to “justify his own violent behaviour”.

Ali told jurors the England cricketer “was very angry and looking for someone to pick on” and said that deciding to use a bottle as a weapon would be a “difficult decision for me to take”.

“I would have to perceive a significant threat to do that. I can hear myself saying ‘Move away’,” he said.

CCTV footage shows Ali waving a bottle towards Mr Hales before delivering a glancing blow to the shoulder of Mr Barry.

“As soon as I see Mr Ali swing the bottle and physically hit them that’s when I took the decision to get involved,” Stokes said.

“I was trying to stop Mr Ali doing damage to anybody with a glass bottle.”

Stokes and Ali tussled and fell to the floor and when the sportsman got back to his feet Mr Hale was stood in front of him.

“I felt under threat by these two and felt I had to do whatever it was to keep myself and others around me safe,” Stokes said.

Mr Hales tries to grab Stokes, repeatedly begging his teammate to stop, telling him “Stokes, Stokes, that’s enough”.

When asked if he had become “enraged” at any point during the incident, Stokes replied that it was a “difficult question to answer”.

The 6ft 2in cricketer added: “I didn’t know they could be carrying more weapons on them.

“They could decide to attack me at any time if I was to turn my back on either of these two. At all times I felt under threat from these two.”

Mr Hales, who was interviewed under caution but never arrested in relation to the incident, was seen on the CCTV stamping and kicking Ali in the head as he lay on the floor.

Witnesses described seeing a group of men acting like “football hooligans” and dialled 999.

Stokes was arrested and asked why he punched Ali. He told police: “Because he was abusing my two friends for being gay.”

Ali, an emergency services worker, suffered a fractured eye socket while Mr Hale, a former soldier, was left with concussion.

Stokes, of Stockton Road, Castle Eden, Durham, and Ali, of Forest Road, Bristol, each denied a charge of affray. Mr Hale was found not guilty last week of affray by the jury on direction of the judge.

    Doncha just love jury trials.

We the jury find the accused to be a very good cricketer.

What a massive waste of time and money.

Well Well Well, it seems Stokesy was telling the truth after all. Now he's going to have loads of gay fans "sticking up for him", thanks to him knocking the fuck out of a couple of gay bashers.

Can't wait to hear the ditty the Barmy Army come up with.

Two gay men have claimed Ben Stokes intervened to protect them during a city centre brawl after they were threatened and suffered homophobic abuse.
Speaking after Stokes' acquittal, the pair praised the "hero" England cricketer for his actions, saying he "stuck for us when we were vulnerable".

Kai Barry and William O'Connor claimed they were "followed" by Ryan Ali, 28, and Ryan Hale, 27, after leaving the Mbargo nightclub in Bristol shortly after 2am on September 25 last year.

The two men told ITV's Good Morning Britain that England all-rounder Stokes - who was found not guilty of affray on Tuesday by a jury at Bristol Crown Court - intervened after they suffered homophobic abuse.

Mr Barry said that when he and Mr O'Connor left the nightclub in the Clifton Triangle they had a cigarette outside with 27-year-old Stokes before they walked off.

"We walked round the corner and got followed by the two guys, and I think they said something, like a horrible remark... a homophobic remark... and we turned around to see what was going on and I remember Bill and the other people shouting and Ben came up the road to check I was all right," he said.
"He called me into the middle of the road and then I get nearly attacked with a bottle, pretty much attacked with a bottle.

"If someone comes at you with a bottle you can't really not feel not threatened."

Stokes accepted he knocked Ali and Hale unconscious during the fracas but insisted he was acting in self-defence, or in the defence of others, after Mr Barry and Mr O'Connor suffered homophobic abuse.

Stokes and Ali both claimed they were acting in self-defence and blamed each other for being the aggressor. The jury acquitted Stokes, Ali and Hale of affray.

CCTV footage showed Ali waving a bottle towards Stokes's England team-mate Alex Hales before delivering a blow to the shoulder of Mr Barry.

Mr Barry and Mr O'Connor, who were not called as witnesses in the trial, were asked whether the cricketer - who has been recalled to the England Test squad after his acquittal - was a hero.

"Yes, definitely, I agree with that 100 per cent. He stuck up for us when we were vulnerable. If he wasn't there, god only knows what would have happened," Mr O'Connor said.

Mr Barry said Stokes "took a risk" by getting involved and could have paid a heavy price if he had been found guilty, although at the time he did not know who the star was.

"I didn't want that for him. He took a risk and I wouldn't expect any normal person to do that in the middle of the street," he said.

"I just thought he was a general bloke having a good time, a bit of banter, a few drinks. He was a really nice person when I was speaking to him."
Mr Barry said he was "pleased" that "really nice guy" Stokes was found not guilty.

"Thank you for what you did and I am so sorry it went down like that and it shouldn't have lasted that long in the first place," he said.

"If it was any other person it wouldn't have, would it?"

Mr O'Connor added: "We were so delighted he got off and (can) get back to his cricket.

"It was brilliant what he done, stick up for two gay men. You don't really get people out there like that, so definitely did a very good job."

Tabloids: "What salacious sports story are we going to print now the trial is over?"

    Danny Cipriani: "Hold my beer".

England rugby star Danny Cipriani is due to appear in court accused of assaulting police during an incident at a Jersey nightclub. The fly-half, 30, was also charged with resisting arrest, common assault, larceny and being disorderly on licensed premises after he was detained in the early hours of Wednesday.

A mere slap on the wrist.

Gloucester and England rugby player Danny Cipriani has been fined £2,000 after pleading guilty at Jersey Magistrates' Court to common assault and resisting arrest.
The other three charges - assaulting police, larceny and being disorderly on licensed premises - have been dropped.
The 30-year-old was charged on Wednesday, having been arrested following an incident in a Jersey nightclub in the early hours of the morning.
A female police officer suffered bruising to her neck in the incident at the Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier on Wednesday, the court was told.
Cipriani was fined £1,500 for resisting arrest and £500 for assault and he was also ordered to pay £250 compensation to the police officer.
Stand-off Cipriani joined Gloucester earlier this summer, following the expiry of his Wasps deal.
His impressive form for the Midlands club last season earned him an England recall after a long spell in the wilderness, and he made his first start since 2008 in the third Test during the summer tour of South Africa.
