Yes, I think it's fair to say that 99.9% of Australians were disgusted in Chappell for that. I remember my dad fuming that he would do such a thing. WTF was he thinking???? They needed a 6 just to draw the match!!!

You don't hear a great deal from Gregg Chappell these days - as Aussies never really forgave him for it either. And Trevor may be dead for all I know as he has not been heard of for decades.

But yep - the most disgraceful incident cricket has seen - even though it was legal at the time.

Mind you, the frequent spot fixing and match fixing incidents with sub- continent teams seems to be getting worse instead of better - these Indian book makers play with a lot more money in each match than some of the players will see in a lifetime. Although it was never proven, I still think Pakistan threw an entire test match in Sydney 2008. Anybody who watched the game would feel the same. As usual, the toothless ICC cleared the match of corruption and no charges were laid. I was infuriated when this happened.

That's the official version who knows the truth??? Remember CA kept the whole thing hushed up without penalty for some time, who knows the real extent of the deal. They only punished them when the rest of the cricketing world found out.... that is possibly the most shocking part of it. To claim the Indian 'just phoned him' is ridiculous after all they both admitted receiving money, rather difficult to do if a guy 'just phoned'.....

You are right. He was commentating though and was not happy about it.

As the ball was being bowled, Ian Chappell (older brother of Greg and Trevor, and a former Australian captain), who was commentating on the match, was heard to call out "No, Greg, no, you can't do that" in an instinctive reaction to the incident, and he remained critical in a later newspaper article on the incident.
