USA set for new star-studded Twenty20 league | USA Cricket News | ESPN Cricinfo

This is quite an interesting development and one I've been expecting for a while.

While I don't think it would involve that many current international players; big name players who are drawing to the end of their careers or recently finished like Lee, Hussey, Collingwood, Shoaib and maybe even the likes of Warne, McGrath Kumble, Jayasuriya, Lara, Flintoff (if fit) could prove a good draw.

Sure it would be a circus mainly aimed at the South Asian and West Indian communities there, but it could be one that could be a real boon for cricket in that wilderness.
Once the yanks see how to really hit a ball, they'd be flocking from that baseball shite in their droves,

The down side is that in order to cater to the attention span of the average yanqui sports fan, they'd have to reduce it to one over.

This is true, but in a T20 the action is pretty relentless so that may well appeal to their short attention spans.

But, how the might have fallen, well crumbled to nothing; actually I don't take any joy in this because I believe that a strong Australian team benefits world cricket and I hope that they become competitive again soon. Clarke is a good batsman, but his personality is not that of a captain - change the captaincy would be step 1; this has been the same since the last Ashes series. Maybe kick Ponting and Clarke out of the team now and bring in new blood, put that decent bowler/batsman back as opener too.

England lost to the Banglas as well. They really should have come home after spanking the Aussies in the Ashes, rather than touring solidly until the world cup.

Bitter usurped sweet for Australia on yet another incomprehensible day of Test cricket at the Wanderers overnight.
Openers Shane Watson and Phil Hughes gave Australia a galloping start of 174 in pursuit of South Africa's modest 266. But both fell short of centuries, and when they were parted, another seismic collapse ensued, the fourth in six innings in this daily more bizarre series. At length, but not much of it, Australia was bowled out for 296.

Among those lost in the carnage was Ricky Ponting, who was out for his second successive duck, haplessly lbw to the brilliant Dale Steyn. In three innings in this series, Ponting has played a total two scoring shots. In his last 13 innings, his average is 14. If he does not make runs in the second innings of this match, his place in team becomes - sad to say - unsustainable.
His dismissal was instructive. For five days between Tests, Ponting worked, hour on hour, to deal with the full ball angled into leg stump. Now Steyn gave him one there and and he missed it. He has been out precisely the same way in all three innings in this series. His motif as a cricketer, in good times and bad, has been his work ethic. Now, seemingly, even that is not enough. Ponting trailed his bat behind him as he left the ground; suddenly, after 15 years, it was a stranger to him.
Ponting's plight is made starker here by the proximity of Jacques Kallis. They are contemporary virtuosos, the same age and equally prolific batsmen, but since Ponting's last Test century, Kallis has made eight.

It could have been so different for Australia. It should have been so different. Watson and Hughes conquered personal demons in their highest partnership of their nine-match association, and only the second of more than 100. ''To get a 170 stand was great, but it was disappointing for both of us not to cash in and get a big 150,'' Hughes said. ''That is what we spoke about over the past few days, batting as a unit.''
Pre-match, Australia spoke of two ideals, to work as a team, and to play with intent. Too easily, intent can become mania, and lead to ruin; it did for South Africa the previous day.
But the Australian pair struck a balance. The waggle of Watson's bat as the bowler strides in betrays the attacking urges he barely suppresses. Channelled, they become flourishing drives and crunching cuts.

Unrestrained, they become flighty edges through backward point. But from the moment he dispatched Steyn far over mid-wicket for six, this looked to be his day.
Hughes played his most authoritative Test innings, creaming his drives and rasping his cuts. Technically, he looked in control. Suddenly, bad Phil re-emerged. He played a half-guide, half-drive, half-slash at Vernon Philander, which was half a shot too many, and he was caught at slip. He made 88. When he gets going, he is a runaway: in 15 Tests, this was only his second completed innings between 37 and 100. The Hughes conundrum is such that although never assured of his place, he is now the fourth youngest Australian to make 1000 runs.
Together, Hughes and Watson scored at more than five an over. South Africa's bowling was ragged, its disposition downcast.
But the meal break and Hughes' wicket changed the mood. Suddenly, it was as if South Africa remembered how to play Test cricket, a game in which it has had little recent practice. Patience and rigour were the keys, the discipline to do nothing for as long as it takes, antithetical to T20. South Africa resolved to tighten the line of its bowling, thinking first to depress the scoring rate, then harvest the wickets.
It worked. Steyn and Morne Morkel bowled high-class spells, and Australia wilted. Watson worried over 41 more balls after lunch for 12 runs, then was caught at at deep mid-wicket from Jacques Kallis. This was bad Shane, taut and jumpy when a century is within reach. He also made 88. In 31 Tests, Watson has made 16 50s, but only two centuries.
Captain Michael Clarke wafted a catch to slips, Usman Khawaja played the stoic but was beaten by Steyn's swing and seam. Next over, so was Mike Hussey, comprehensively. Steyn had Pat Cummins caught behind, and would have had five wickets if a substitute fieldsman had not dropped a catch. Two more wickets in the second innings would put him level with Dennis Lillee as the fastest man to 250 Test wickets.
Haddin left his first ball with all he had, but then he prodded half-forward to leg-spinner Imran Tahir and became his first Test wicket. Peter Siddle was his second four balls later, clean bowled by a mastserful wrong-'un. Tahir completed the rout by trapping Nathan Lyon with another wrong-'un.
In the first session, Australia made 0/169 from 33 overs, a rate of more than five. In the next two, it lost 10/127. Asked what would be a playable fourth innings target, Hughes said it was unknowable and Steyn said he didn't know. It sums up this series.

another horrendous collapse by australia. watson did it again - played a rubbish shot when he was close to getting a ton. out of his 16 50's + only 2 centuries, many of those 50's were high 50's. he got out 4 times in a row in his 90's not so long back. what to do with punter? spends hours in the nets everyday, and gets another duck. credit to dale steyn. he bowled very well - beating a record set by dennis lillee for the fastest 250 wickets if he takes 2 wickets in the next innings is worthy of respect..

LIKE those racetrack ghouls who watch grands prix anticipating a crash, we gathered on the couch to see Phil Hughes bat with King Kong on his shoulders. However, unusually, Michael Clarke won the toss and imposed the maximum sentence. New Zealand to bat on a pitch so green Kermit the frog would have been camouflaged.
So, first, we had to endure the grim procession as the Kiwi's dead-men-batting marched, one after another, to their execution. It was a spectacle so unsavoury Madame Defarge would have left her seat beside the guillotine and gone home to get in the washing. One that merely accentuated the already anticlimactic nature of this mercifully brief series.
Even more anticlimactic when, after Chris Martin did his Marcel Marceau thing - ''Man with an invisible bat! Voila!'' - rain began to fall and Australia's innings was delayed. Then, finally Hughes, came and went with almost as much predictability as Martin. There can be no greater condemnation of a batsman than that.

Which is not to say Hughes's dismissal was the cause for celebration, even from those of us keen to see a more traditional opener - one who can do old-fashioned things like ''hold up an end'' - at the top of the order. Because you believe Hughes's need to return to Shield cricket does not mean you also hope his bats are infested with white ants, his house burns down or he enters a long-term relationship with Lara Bingle. But, surely, the writing is now on the wall for the selectors in letters 20 metres high: REAL OPENER PLEASE! With some justification, Hughes's advocates will claim he cannot be judged by this latest failure because of the conditions. And, certainly, he is unlucky to have played two of the most important Tests of his young life at the Gabba and Blundstone Arena (which, incidentally, sounds more like the sort of place you might conduct a monster truck show than a picturesque cricket ground).
Yet, such is the depth of Hughes's plight that Merv Hughes has more chance of riding a Melbourne Cup winner than his namesake has of riding his luck. In Brisbane, Hughes was caught snicking twice and dropped once. Yesterday, he edged his first ball for four and another to second slip. Why bother holding slips practice before Australia bats when Hughes does it in the middle?
Unless Hughes can produce a stupendous second innings, Tony Greig will (for once) have summed it up: ''That's the end of Phil Hughes.'' Of course, we said the same of Matthew Hayden after he was bowled by Curtly Ambrose at the MCG in 1996. And, besides returning to complete a Test career that would reap 8625 runs at 50.73, we were right. A pause is essential, but this does not have to be the end for Hughes.
Even before the clouds gathered and Hughes departed, it had been a gloomy day - beginning with the news of Daniel Vettori's injury. New Zealand without Vettori is like The Stones without Jagger. Or given the Kiwis don't get much satisfaction even with their heroic skipper, like Shane Warne without his mobile.
Nine's Mark Nicholas went fishing for a compelling storyline to enliven the match when he interviewed Ricky Ponting during the pre-Test Milo commercial. Mr Wow asked Ponting if this would be his last appearance in Tasmania. Ponting growled into his shirt-mic that he hoped not. So, as far as we are aware, no hometown farewell for Punter. Not unless it is imposed.
Watching the Kiwis bat proved to be like scoffing a Kit Kat after reading a recipe for chocolate souffle, vaguely unsatisfying. Even less so knowing half the population of New Zealand is still queued outside the NZRU offices waiting to have their picture taken with the Webb Ellis Cup. All deliriously oblivious to the plight of their hapless cricketers.
Which is not to say Australia will achieve nothing in this series. This series is the coming of James Pattinson, whose deliveries yesterday were as curvaceous as Christina Hendricks.
If Pattinson's Kiwi scalps were only technically Test wickets, we anticipate the deliciously ironic moment when the South Engfricans note that his brother Darren played for England, his father John is from Grimsby, and try to claim him. Assuming the Victorian has recovered from the inevitable back injury, stress fractures and dose of brewer's droop that besets every Australian paceman, you can only drool at the thought of Pattinson steaming in at Lord's and then Headingley in 2013.

Are young players coming up and through? Is a policy in place to get the Aussies back on track?

^I'm sure we will get a good team together before too long betty. Not since the retirement of lillee, thompson, marsh, chappell, etc. , have australia had to rebuild a team to this extent.

We have a few good young quick bowlers coming through the ranks, which is a start - bowlers win matches as they say, and johnson and siddle are just too hot and cold to put any fear into the opposition.

I'd like to see sean marsh opening the batting when fit, but what to do with the batting line up is Australia's biggest problem at the moment. bring back matthew hayden! :)
