South Africa have started talking about trying to salvage a draw from the second Test against Australia after paceman Peter Siddle's sizzling MCG debut helped reduce the tourists to 7-198 on day two.
Replying to Australia's first innings of 394, South Africa's 1-0 lead in the three-match series is now under threat with three days play remaining.
The Proteas trail by 196 runs with JP Duminy 34 not out and spinner Paul Harris on eight.
Siddle (3-24 from 13 overs) and spinner Nathan Hauritz (2-49 off 20), both playing in their third Tests and yet to establish regular places in the team, outshone pace spearhead Brett Lee (0-68).
Left-armer Mitchell Johnson continued his good form with 2-53.
Siddle dismissed Neil McKenzie (0) and AB De Villiers (7) cheaply.
Inspired by his home crowd, the 24-year-old also claimed the prize wicket of skipper Graeme Smith for 62.
"It always gives you a bit of confidence when they're cheering you on and you get that wicket early on," Siddle said.
"It was an amazing feeling."
Tasmania's Ben Hilfenhaus was close to making his debut in Melbourne after Siddle's one-wicket performance in Australia's loss in the first Test in Perth last week.
"Just the excitement of being at home, the Boxing Day Test, home ground, lots of support and feeling comfortable," Siddle said.
"It was a different lead-up, with Ben Hilfenhaus in the squad I didn't know whether I was going to play or what was going to happen.
"But I've worked hard and had to stamp my foot out there and have a good crack.
"I'm just really pleased more than anything, that I know I can compete at this level."
Johnson replaced Lee in the ninth over and the West Australian struck with his third ball, claiming Hashim Amla (19) caught at gully.
South Africa's anchor man Jacques Kallis was on 26 when he fell caught behind off the bowling of Hauritz on the last ball before tea at 3-102.
Hauritz kept the pressure on the Proteas by having Mark Boucher (3) caught at square leg as South Africa lost 4-39 to be 6-141.
Johnson replaced Lee late in the day and bowled Morne Morkel for 21 with the first ball of his spell.
"There are two ways we can go to get ourselves back into the game - at best to win, but try and save it as well," South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said.
Arthur said he was hoping for 70 runs from his tailenders by lunch on Sunday.
"Not only does that get us closer, it also takes time out of the game. Australia are obviously chasing," he said.
"We're lucky enough to be one-nil up. They're going to have to come out and be a little bit more positive which will allow us some opportunity with the ball.
"We've got it all to do, really."
Australia's tail wagged vigorously on day two, despite pace ace Dale Steyn's 5-87.
Resuming on 6-280, Michael Clarke advanced from 36 to an unbeaten 88.
Lee (21) and Clarke contributed 45 for the seventh wicket and Siddle (19) helped Clarke add 42 for the last wicket.

Haley Bracken, wife of Test cricketer Nathan Bracken, is certainly putting up a decent challenge given her latest spread in yob mag Zoo Weekly.

In what could possibly be a tribute to Bingle's infamous "pads and bikini" snap taken back in 2006, Mrs Bracken also pads up for her latest shoot which is accompanied by the front page headline "Nathan Bracken's Missus".

Zoo Weekly's esteemed editor Paul Merrill goes on to declare Haley "Australia's hottest WAG by a mile", adding that "Nathan's a very lucky boy".

I believe the proteas have the best fast bowler (Steyn) and the best batsman (J.P Duminy) in the world at the moment.

The aussies knew they were coming and could do nothing about it.

Yep mate he certainly got the wolves away from the door with those 2 innings but us aussies are even worse than you poms when it comes to losing.

They will be sharpening their axes and if they lose this series which looks most likely.

I have heard from my son, who plays grade cricket in Sydney that there at least 2 sides worth of cricketers playing in domestic grade competitions that could beat the present Australian side.

Too old and past it, including Bret Lee and changes have to be made.

He will be lucky to hold down his position let alone being captain mate.

I expect Ponting will be around for at least another 2 summers and if he can grow as an allrounder cricketer I expect Symonds would be a good captain.

He has to rid himself of his cavalier attitude though, especially with regard to his batting style.

If Prince was fit, Duminy wouldn't have been selected. Like the Aussies, South Afirca's selectors now have a major headache, but for somewhat different reasons.
