Marnus Labuschagne brings up his third hundred with a 6. He is batting with Smith and looking the better batsman - this guy has the goods!
Australia 2/205
Smith gone for 43 -Smith hooks and is caught by the man placed at leg slip. He fell for it!!! Well planned Wagner.
So you're finally back on the cricket thread then, wally.
Always a sign that things are going well for the Aussies.
That's a little unfair.
He started commenting near to the start of play and the Aussies didn't have the best start.
I reckon the day ended even. Some say the Aussies slightly in-front.
Two things to note though ...Australia has edged the first day's play of the first Test against New Zealand in Perth thanks to a third consecutive Test century by Marnus Labuschagne.
At stumps, Australia was 4-246 after winning the toss, with Labuschagne unbeaten on 110 thanks to another unflappable knock, alongside Travis Head on 18 not out.
It means Labuschagne has scored three tons on the spin, including his maiden Test hundred against Pakistan, in a productive summer that has continued on his increasing stature in the game following his scintillating late Ashes form.
It wasn't a flawless batting performance from Australia, but New Zealand was never quite lethal enough to take control of the day.
The tourists extracted conventional swing from the pink ball for much of the day, but the Australian batsmen were watchful and took few risks.
NZ'z debutante quick Lockie Ferguson went off with a suspected calf strain meaning their fast bowling stocks are depleted and they need a high rotation in the 40C Perth heat implying one, maybe two part-time bowlers.
Assuming the Aussies bat the first and the majority of the second session, that leaves the KIWI's batting the 3rd session, under lights and that is usual for the pink ball to swing.
Assuming that the Perth pitch plays in a similar fashion to the Adelaide one.
If Australia can amass 320 - 350 in hopefully faster time then yesterdays pace, the weather looks fine for the next 4 days and the Game is Australia's to lose
IMHO
^ True. Tempted to hook him down to the boundry, but knowing cyrille he will have a leg slip
Losing Ferguson is a big blow for the Kiwis, but despite the loss they bowled well, and to a plan. Their bowlers prove you dont need to keep bowling 140+ to be effective. They kept the run rate down to 2 an over or so early in the innings, and removed both of the openers + Smith, which is pretty good going. Rotating the remaining bowlers in the volcanically hot Perth weather (too early??) could be a deciding factor, though Wagner seems to want to keep bowling until the sheep come home...
Will be intersting to watch Starc swing the pink ball if we are bowling this evening - its still too early to know what a good score is, but hope we can post at least 350/400..
Is it me or does this test feel attritional, could see a few more limp off
As Boycs says judge any score through an innings by adding two wickets. He talks sense the old boy at times; 306 / 7 ....
Aussies all out for 416.
NZ in for a session and a bit.
Maybe NZ 4/130 by the time they blow out the candles?
^ Sounds close. Our pace attack is very good. NZ need to bat well to make a game of it. C'mon Aussie!
I may have underestimated.
NZ are 2/1
^ Big trouble! 5/109 - Starc!
Big blow for NZ as Ferguson ruled out of remainder of first Test
New Zealand will be short a bowler for the remainder of the Perth Test against Australia with confirmation Lockie Ferguson sustained a calf strain.
Let's hope Hazelwood doesn't suffer the same fate...
^ I was close
A wrap of the days play ...
Australia is in a dominant position against New Zealand after the second day's play in the first Test in Perth thanks to some gritty batting and a feisty late spell with the ball.
At stumps, New Zealand was 5-109, trailing Australia by 307 after the hosts were dismissed for a challenging 416.
Mitchell Starc was the destroyer under lights, claiming 4-31 to have the tourists reeling.
Australia's starring batsmen on day one did not add too many to their overnight totals, as Marnus Labuschagne was bowled for 143, before Travis Head clubbed the ball straight to the fielder at cover for 56.
Smith took a screamer of a catch
it's hard to find good highlight videos with all the copyright laws these days, but here is the best one I found with day 2 highlights..
Australia beat NZ by 296 runs.
Was hoping the kiwis would put up a better fight.
Let's hope the boxing day test will be a better competition..
That's how how I feel when a test match finishes in 4 days, Johnny. We got ripped off with the Pak series too .... the ashes series was brilliant at least..
This is just crazy ... for cricketers.

IPL auction record as Pat Cummins earns $3.17m pay day from Kolkata Knight Riders
Pat Cummins's status as the number-ranked bowler in Test cricket has helped him pick up the biggest IPL cheque ever handed out to an overseas player.
Key points:
- Pat Cummins's auction value of $3.17 million was greater than that of Englishman Ben Stokes in 2017
- Glenn Maxwell was auctioned for $2.2 million and will join Kings XI Punjab
- Chris Lynn made his reserve price of $410,000, a salary cut of $1.4 million from his deal last year
Thursday's IPL auction saw the Australian quick signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for $3.17 million, eclipsing the $3 million fee Rajasthan Royals forked out for England superstar Ben Stokes in 2017.
Cummins's services were subject to a tug-of-war between Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Capitals, before Kolkata swooped in to snare the New South Wales quick.
