Jets sign DT Jaylen Twyman, place WR Malik Taylor on IR

The Jets signed defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman on Sunday, the team announced.

Twyman played for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas this spring.

He entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick of the Vikings in 2021. Twyman spent his first two seasons on Minnesota's roster before joining Miami's practice squad in October 2022. He has not played a regular-season game.

The Jets placed receiver Malik Taylor on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

Taylor had an undisclosed injury in training camp. He will miss the entire 2024 season unless the Jets release him with an injury settlement.

He appeared in three games with the Jets last season while on the practice squad, totaling two catches for 13 yards.

Bears’ Douglas Coleman III immobilized and taken to hospital after tackle

Chicago Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III was immobilized on a stretcher and taken from Arrowhead Stadium in an ambulance on Thursday night after tackling the Chiefs’ Cornell Powell on the first play of the second half of their preseason game.

The 26-year-old Coleman had his head up as he came darting in to make the tackle near the Chiefs sideline, but his neck bent awkwardly to the side and the former CFL standout went down on impact. Coleman lay motionless as trainers from both teams rushed onto the field to check on him, and they were soon joined by doctors as a medical cart also drove onto the field.

Alvin Kamara on not holding out from Saints training camp amid contract talks: I am not stupid

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara left June's mandatory minicamp early while in a contract dispute but reported for training camp this week.

On Wednesday, Kamara did his best Marshawn Lynch impression, admitting he arrived to avoid getting fined $50,000 per day.

"I ain't stupid. I ain't gonna give the money up," Kamara said. "I'm trying to get some money, right? I was gonna be here. It's no one that has a jersey on, I wouldn't even blame any coaches [with] what's going on with contract issues right now. This happens all across the league. It's happened here. It's happened everywhere. People trying to get contracts, trying to get paid. I'll be a fool to spite my teammates because of a dispute I'm having with upstairs. I wouldn't even call it a dispute. We're just having conversations about compensation. … I'm not that guy. I'm for the team. So I'm here, I'm doing what I've got to do. I'm working."

Karmara admitted his early departure from minicamp last month came after he got no traction on his contract concerns.

"Trying to get a contract done, and it just ain't been nothing happening," he said. "Ain't been no real conversations or, I would say, worthy conversations of contract. So that last day was just me saying… I think there was a misconception about 'Oh well, Alvin didn't say anything about a contract,' which I never do really. It's just you know it's time. We've been talking about it a little bit. It hasn't been anything really meaningful. It's been kinda one side where they at, and I'm kinda like, 'Eh, nah.' So I went to the crib."

Turning 29 on Thursday, Kamara is set to earn $10.2 million in base salary this season, with just $1 million guaranteed. His 2025 base salary of $22.4 million with no guaranteed dollars is an inflated figure he's unlikely ever to see.

NFL changes kickoff rules

The NFL is making significant changes to its rules this season.

The big picture: Kickoffs will look wildly different and hip-drop tackles have been banned.

Between the lines: Kickoff returns were at an all-time low last season (only 22% of all kickoffs were returned) and, after analyzing the last two seasons, the league found that hip-drop tackles were responsible for more lower body injuries than other tackles.

What to know about the new NFL kickoff rule

The new kickoff format looks like the XFL's and will be in effect for one year before the league reevaluates it in 2025.

• This changes where the kicker and kickoff team start and adds a new landing zone.

How it works:

• The kicker will start on the 35-yard line while the kickoff team starts on the receiving team's 40-yard line.
• The 20-yard line to the end zone is now the landing zone and if the kick doesn't reach this zone, the ball will be placed at the 40-yard line. If the ball goes into the end zone, it will then be placed on the 35-yard line.

What is a hip-drop tackle and why is it banned?

In March league owners unanimously voted to make the hip-drop tackle illegal — its use will result in a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first-down.

• A hip-drop tackle occurs when a tackler grabs a runner with both hands or arms, then swivels and drops his hips to bring the runner to the ground, often landing on the runner's legs below the knee.

What they're saying: Some former and current players approve of the ban, while others dislike it.

• Former defensive end J.J. Watt, compared it to flag football in a tweet, while former running back Kenyan Drake supported the new rule, stating his injury in 2021 was due to a hip-drop tackle.

Ahead of March's decision, the NFL's labor union released a statement in opposition.

• "While the NFLPA remains committed to improvement to our game with health and safety in mind, we cannot support a rule change that causes confusion for us as players, for coaches, for officials and especially, for fans."

The bottom line: Viewers can expect more flags and penalties this season as players and refs adjust to the changes.
