Elite runners confirmed for 5th Abu Dhabi Marathon

Abu Dhabi Sports Council has announced the star-studded line-up of international runners for the fifth ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon 2023.

An estimated 23,000 runners are expected to take part in the Dec. 16 event competing in the marathon (42.195 km), marathon relay, 10 km, 5 km, and 2.5 km races.

All races will commence at different locations near the ADNOC headquarters on Corniche Road and finish at the ADNOC Campus, near Bainuna public park.

Uganda’s Andrew Kwemoi, winner of the 2023 Milano Marathon — where he hit a personal best of 2: 07 : 14 — will be joined by Kenya’s Kiptum Barnabas, who finished first in both the 2019 Hong Kong Marathon and the Buenos Aires Marathon in 2017. Barnabas’ compatriot, Leonard Barsoton, will also be competing in this year’s race, having set his own personal best of 2 : 09 : 06 in 2023.

The women’s race will feature Ethopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba, the 10 km Olympic champion 2017 Chicago Marathon winner. Joining her in the strong elite female line-up, also from Ethiopia, will be Hawi Feysa (2 : 23 : 38), and Maurine Chepkemoi from Kenya, the 2022 Enschede Marathon winner.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Top runners from around the world competed in the 30th annual Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday.

People cheered as thousands of runners braved not only the cold but any feelings of doubt or hesitation to participate in the Philadelphia Marathon.

"We really saw the City of Brotherly Love showing up and showing out and people were making sure that we had the motivation that we needed," Caleb-Michael Files said.

The 26.2-mile trek took runners -- some disguised as dinosaurs, Santa's and turkeys— through centuries of history and architecture and scenic views throughout Fairmount Park and along the Schuylkill River.

"The historic district, where is there you get to go through a city, a historic city, and the streets are completely closed down," she said.

About 35,000 people took part in the marathon races throughout the weekend. Some who put sneakers on the pavement said they're running for a life-saving cause.

    Marathon winners
Bernard Koech, of Kenya, won the men's race with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 26 seconds.

Mercy Kwambai, also of Kenya, won the women's race with a time of 2 hours, 30 minutes and 52 seconds.

Assaults on both the men's and women's course records are expected at the Shanghai Marathon, a World Athletics Platinum Label road race, on Sunday (26).

A total of 12 runners in the men’s field have personal bests inside the 2 : 07 : 14 course record set by Kenya’s Paul Lonyangata back in 2015.

Kinde Atanaw of Ethiopia is the fastest entrant courtesy of his 2 : 03 : 51 PB set four years ago in Valencia, where he staged a convincing victory in his debut over the classic distance.

The 30-year-old went on to register two sub-2 : 06 marks in 2021 and 2022 respectively, including a fourth-place finish at the London Marathon last year, but he failed to finish the race in London this year in what has been his only outing of 2023 so far.

Elisha Rotich will lead the Kenyan charge. The 33-year-old won the Paris Marathon two years ago with a career best of 2 : 04 : 21 and he also has five other marathon victories to his name, but he has yet to prove his shape so far in 2023.

Ethiopia’s Abayneh Degu, a 2 : 04 : 53 performer, will chase his first career marathon title in Shanghai. He clocked 2 : 08 : 28 in Osaka in February and finished fifth in China’s Lanzhou in 2 : 12 : 57 five months ago.

Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba of Kenya emerged victorious from a three-man battle in the last kilometres to secure the title at the Shanghai Marathon, a World Athletics Platinum Label road race, improving the Chinese all-comers’ record to 2 : 05 :3 5 on Sunday (26).

The 25-year-old Kenyan chopped nearly two minutes off his personal best of 2 : 07 : 28, set when winning the 2022 Munich Marathon, beating the course record of 2 : 07 : 14 set by compatriot Paul Lonyangata eight years ago, and smashing the Chinese all-comers’ record of 2 : 06 : 19 set by Kenya’s Moses Mosop in Xiamen in 2015.

It's the third marathon title of the year for Kipchumba, who has remained unbeaten in 2023 following victories in Hong Kong in February and Xiamen in April.

“It’s my first time in Shanghai. The course is very good and the weather for today is perfect,” said Kipchumba. “I am so grateful to win the race and to break the course record, and even China’s (all-comers’) record.”

Chow Yun Fat, 68, finishes his first half-marathon in less than 2½ hours

Movie superstar Chow Yun Fat proves that age is no obstacle in conquering marathons.

The avid runner took part in the inaugural Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HK Section) Half Marathon on the morning of Nov 19.

It was the first half-marathon for the 68-year-old Hong Kong actor, who completed the 21km race in 2hr 27min 56sec. In February, he ran in the 10km race at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon and completed it in 1hr 3min 58sec.

Speaking to the Hong Kong media after the Nov 19 event, Chow said it was not difficult running the half-marathon as he had paced himself, mindful of his physical strength.

    Well done Mr. Fat.

Puff Daddy/P.Diddy, self made billionaire from a Harlem slum with numerous chart topping acts on his CV was asked what his greatest achievement is.

His answer was running the New York Marathon. 'There's no faking that, that sheet is real and you and you alone, you battle to conquer it or you don't, 100% of it is on you'.

    Marathons . . . pffft

An amazing feat, when records are more often broken by seconds, or a few minutes, Cochrane has entered three events, won three, set three records.

Ultraman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii
    27 November 2023

New Zealnder Simon Cochrane has blitzed the competition in Hawaii on Monday to be crowned world champion and also lower the previous race record by an astonishing 44 minutes.

Contested over 515km during three days of racing, the event starts with a 10km ocean swim followed by a 145km cycle. Day two puts the athletes back on their bikes for a 276km journey – that features a number of serious climbs – before the race closes out on day three with a double marathon, 85kms of running.

Cochrane completed the course in 20 hours and 57 minutes, bettering the previous record of 21hrs, 41mins.

Simon Cochrane broke the world record in his first ever Ultraman which he won in Noosa, Australia

Cochrane’s victory and race record is made all the more remarkable by it being just his third crack at the Ultraman distance following a long career in Ironman and multisport events.

In his first attempt, at the Ultraman Australia in Noosa back in May, Cochrane not only won but broke the world record in a time of 19hrs, 48mins.

He then qualified for Kona by winning Ultraman Canada in race record time in July.

Giving the female winners stuffed rhinos 555

rhino แรด is slang for a horny female Adding the prefix Ee to rhino อีแรด makes it a derogatory term for a chick that's up for it - slut/slutty-ish.

Dangerous business, long distance trail running

Three runners mugged at gunpoint during Ultra Trail Cape Town
    28 November 2023

Three runners were mugged at gunpoint while they took part in RMB Ultra Trail Cape Town (UTCT) 100 mile race last weekend.

It comes after 2023 Western States 100 champion Tom Evans pulled out of the 100km race after he was attacked and mugged at knife point whilst running on Table Top Mountain in the build-up to the race.

British runner Al Leslie was among those who were mugged.

"They pulled out a gun and a knife and took all of our stuff, but luckily no one was hurt.

“Then we just ran to the road and warned the marshals who were there.

“They were very aggressive. It was a very scary situation. When they point a gun right in your face, it is not something you get used to.

“In the moment, in the moment you just decide to keep going because otherwise you let the bad guys win."

^A friend (and his wife) of mine has two homes in S. Africa. One of the homes has a wall around it,……..with a security team (2 - 3 guys) that watch the property.

He has requested we visit on multiple occasions, but I was a bit hesitant.

We were making plans to visit Pretoria when the Jacarandas were blooming a few years back but then Covid.

Your story above has given me second thoughts again.

Thousands of runners got up early Sunday morning, put on their gear, and double-knotted their laces to run the Seattle Marathon.

Streets were closed from around 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. as the route took participants around the city.

“The Seattle Marathon began modestly in 1970 when a group of friends from the University of Washington decided to hold their own running event,” says the Seattle Marathon’s website. “Fewer than 38 runners started the first annual event, with most of them completing the full 26.2 miles. From these modest beginnings, the Seattle Marathon Family of Events has risen to become one of the largest and most influential mass-participation runs in the Pacific Northwest.”

There was a full and half running marathon, along with a full and half walking marathon and a wheelchair option. People could even join in virtually.

Nearly 6,000 people participated, according to the Seattle Marathon’s website.

University of Washington Medicine was the marathon’s main sponsor.

“Congratulations to everyone who participated in the UW Medicine Seattle Marathon and Half-Marathon! Don’t forget to stretch!” wrote the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.

ISLAMABAD: The Awareness and Prevention Wing of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi, in collaboration with Islamabad Running Club, Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Islamabad administration, on Saturday organised a marathon race to highlight the detrimental effects of corruption.

According to a press release, approximately 400 participants from diverse backgrounds joined the marathon, promoting awareness against corruption through sports and healthy activities.

By utilising the influence of sports and community involvement, the event underscored that the collective responsibility for a corruption-free society extends beyond social divisions.

The marathon was a component of the Anti-Corruption Week 2023 campaign, titled “Race Against Corruption.” Participants from diverse backgrounds, including government officials, members of civil society, young professionals, students and athletes took part in the event.

Sisay Lemma collected another big-race win in the 2023 Valencia Marathon on Sunday (3 December).

The 2021 London Marathon victor broke clear of fellow Ethiopian Dawit Wolde and Kenya's Kandiwott Kandie with 7km to go of the 42.195km race distance.

The trio were well inside world record pace at 30km, but Lemma eventually crossed the line in 2 : 01 : 48, over a minute outside Kelvin Kiptum's mark from Chicago in October.

Lemma, who turns 33 later this month, did break Kiptum's course record from 12 months ago by five seconds.

The 2023 Honolulu Marathon is this weekend, and over 26,000 participants are expected to hit the streets in the fourth-largest marathon in the U.S. The 26.2-mile course kicks off on Sunday at 5 a.m. on Ala Moana Boulevard with fireworks to light up the sky.

Online registration for 2023 is now closed; however, you can still sign up in person for any of the three race distances at the Honolulu Marathon Expo.

Beginning on Thursday, runners have to pick up their own race bibs at the Hawaii Convention Center.

Marathon officials said no one else can pickup your race bib for you and it can’t be done the day of the race.

    • Valencia Marathon to offer one million dollars for a world record

It’s no secret that the Trinidad Alfonso Valencia Marathon in Spain boasts one of the fastest courses and deepest marathon fields in the world. For the second consecutive year, the men’s and women’s winner in Valencia has recorded a time under 2 : 01 and 2 : 16. While Valencia isn’t part of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors, it continues to attract some of the world’s fastest-distance runners. To set Valencia apart, organizers have an added incentive to the 2024 race—one million euros (CDN $1,400,000) for the man or woman to break the marathon world record on the course. Canadian Running

He may not be in “full marathon shape yet” but Soh Rui Yong still had enough in his tank to claim his fourth national marathon title, and first in four years, at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) on Dec 3.

His effort of 2hr 40min 34sec saw him earn $10,000 as the fastest local, ahead of Daniel Leow (2:48:08) and Benjamin Khoo (2 : 50 : 37).

Soh had claimed a hat-trick of wins from 2017 to 2019, before it was dropped for the 2022 edition. The SCSM was held virtually in 2020 and in a hybrid format in 2021 due to the pandemic.

Soh, who clinched the SEA Games marathon gold in 2015 and 2017, last ran a marathon in Valencia in 2021 when he set the national record of 2 : 22 : 59.

At the National Stadium, Soh finished 15th in the men’s race, which was won by Kenyan David Barmasai Tumo in 2 : 14 : 15.

Soh, 32, said: “It is a nice feeling (to be national champion) again. It has not happened in four years and I have not run a marathon in two years, so to make a comeback to the marathon in Singapore is very nice.
