Rose Zhang continues to make golf history

Rose Zhang. Get to know the name.

Driving the news: The Stanford sophomore made history this week, becoming the first women's golfer to win consecutive national titles.

    • Zhang, who turned 20 on Wednesday, also tied World Golf Hall of Famer Lorena Ochoa's NCAA record for wins in a season (8) and career (12).
    • Her 12 wins broke a Stanford record for men and women, a mark previously held by someone you may be familiar with: Tiger Woods.

Context: This is just the latest milestone for Zhang, who has already swept the most important amateur titles. She won the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2020 at age 17, the U.S. Girls' Junior in 2021 and the Augusta National Women's Amateur this April, where she broke the scoring record.

    • The California native set the NCAA single-season scoring average record as a freshman (69.68), and she was even better this year (68.81). Is it any surprise that Adidas made her its first student-athlete to sign a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal?
    • Zhang has been No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for nearly three years, longer than any player in history. She's now expected to forgo her final two years of NCAA eligibility and move on to professional golf.

What they're saying: "She's the absolute GOAT," Stanford coach Anne Walker told Golf Digest this week. "She is the best amateur of all time."

The big picture: Many expected Zhang to turn pro directly out of high school, which is what phenoms like Lydia Ko, Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson did before her. But Zhang chose the college route, mirroring the path typically taken by her male counterparts.

    • It's rare for male phenoms to bypass college golf. Look no further than the world's top four players: No. 1 Scottie Scheffler played four years at Texas, No. 2 Jon Rahm played four years at Arizona State and No. 4 Patrick Cantlay played two years at UCLA.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Team Holcim-PRB blows past distance records

Skipper Kevin Escoffier and his Team Holcim-PRB have shattered the existing 24-hour distance records in the monohull class.

First to fall was The Ocean Race 24-hour Speed Record Challenge sponsored by Ulysse Nardin, previously set at 602 nautical miles by Simeon Tienpont's Team AkzoNobel in the last race.

A few hours later and the outright monohull record, 618 nautical miles, set by the 100 footer Comanche in 2015, had been eclipsed.

As of 0630 UTC on Friday morning, Team Holcim-PRB had peaked at 640.9 nautical miles.

Conditions have been near perfect for making a record run - downwind reaching, in 25-27 knots of wind, with a relatively flat sea state.

Escoffier commented on their success: "It’s a great boat and I’m really pleased! It’s not every day you break a record like this.

"I’m really happy for the whole team after what happened on the fourth leg (the team retired after dismasting). We don’t know what’s going to happen next, even if we’re going to do everything we can to win this leg. In any case, I think it’s a great reward for the whole team."

The run has brought the team within just a few miles of 11th Hour Racing Team who continue to lead the leg.

2023 Belmont Stakes horses, futures, odds, date

With Mage winning the Kentucky Derby and National Treasure winning the Preakness Stakes, there won't be a Triple Crown winner at the 2023 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 10. However, most are expecting a strong 2023 Belmont Stakes field at Belmont Park for the "Test of Champions." Forte, Tapit Trice and Angel of Empire were all among the Kentucky Derby favorites after major prep race wins and all three could get the chance to run against each other in the Belmont Stakes 2023. Forte was scratched the morning of the Kentucky Derby as the favorite because of a bruised foot, but he recently worked a half-mile and is the 3-1 favorite in the 2023 Belmont Stakes odds.

Tapit Trice is 7-2 among the 2023 Belmont Stakes horses, while Angel of Empire is 4-1.The 2023 Belmont Stakes post time is 6:50 p.m. ET. Before locking in any 2023 Belmont Stakes picks, be sure to see the horse racing predictions from SportsLine's Jody Demling, given his dominant Belmont track record.

    Top 2023 Belmont Stakes predictions

For the 2023 Belmont Stakes, Demling is fading Tapit Trice, even though he's one of the top favorites at 7-2. Like Forte, Tapit Trice is trained by Todd Pletcher and likely to take heavy action given that his sire, Tapit, has produced four previous Belmont winners. However, even though he's bred for distance, his speed figures haven't been improving and his running style is likely to put him in a crowd again.

Stricker Captures First KitchenAid Senior PGA

The last two Ryder Cup captains, going head-to-head down the stretch late on Sunday at the new, state-of-the-art home of the PGA of America. Difficult to envision a more perfect script for the inaugural championship being played at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco.

Then one of the two captains birdied the 72nd hole to send the event into a playoff.

Padraig Harrington, 2021 European Ryder Cup Captain, entered the final round of the 83rd KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship with a one-shot lead over Steve Stricker, the victorious American Ryder Cup Captain from two years ago. The two men later walked up the par-5 18th fairway with Stricker holding a one-shot lead on one of the biggest risk-reward holes on the golf course.

Harrington used his prodigious length and reached the green in two shots and two-putted for birdie. Stricker missed from 18 feet for birdie to win the championship outright.

Stricker, however, capitalized on a poor drive from Harrington on the first playoff hole and walked away with his first KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, his second major of the year and sixth major overall. He shot 70-67-64-69 for an 18-under-par 270 total and his final-round 69 was his 49th consecutive round of par or better on the PGA Tour Champions.

    Starts at 7:25

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Boston Celtics drop a hot steaming turd right in the middle of their home floor.

Churchill Downs, home of the famed Kentucky Derby, will suspend racing at the conclusion of this weekend's competition to examine safety measures after 12 horse deaths in the past month, officials said Friday.

With operations shut down at the iconic track in Louisville, Kentucky, the remainder of its Spring Meet, scheduled to run to July 3, will be relocated to Ellis Park in Henderson, Kentucky, starting on Saturday, June 10.

Churchill Downs Incorporated said in a statement Friday that officials would conduct a "top-to-bottom review of all safety and surface protocols and integrity measures in collaboration and consultation with nationwide experts."

The move comes a day after Churchill Downs announced that new safety measures would be implemented aimed at improving horse safety.

Those moves included restricting horses to four starts in a rolling eight-week span and eligibility bans for horses that do not perform well.

Officials also paused a program of track-based incentives, including trainer start bonuses and purse payout allocations to every race finisher through last place.

But with the reason for the spike in equine fatalities still a mystery, Churchill Downs officials have opted to pursue further evaluation of track safety measures out of "an abundance of caution."

"Following a thorough internal review and concurrent investigations conducted by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, no single factor has been identified as a potential cause and no discernable pattern has been detected to link the fatalities," Churchill Downs said in a statement.

"Diagnostics testing of the racetrack by experts have not raised concerns and the experts have concluded that the surface is consistent with prior measurements from Churchill Downs in past years," the company addded.

"Even though the investigations and expert reports have indicated no surface issues, in an abundance of caution, and in alignment with a recommendation from HISA, CDI has elected to relocate the meet in order to conduct a top-to-bottom review of all safety and surface protocols and integrity measures in collaboration and consultation with nationwide experts."

Mage won the Kentucky Derby on May 6, capping a disturbing week at Churchill Downs where seven horses died within 10 days -- two of them euthanized after they were injured in support races on Derby day.

The 11th and 12th fatalities occurred last Friday and Saturday, when Lost in Limbo and Kimberley Dream suffered injuries while racing and were euthanized.

Ellis Park is also owned and operated by Churchill Downs Inc., and chief executive Bill Carstanjen said moving the remainder of the meeting there would allow it to meet its "immense responsibility as the economic engine of the Thoroughbred industry in Kentucky which provides jobs and income for thousands of families every day."

The Volleyball Nations League is on at the moment and the Thai ladies are in Turkey. They lost a hard fought match in 5 sets against former champions Italy, went on to beat Canada 3-0, lose to Poland 0-3 and yesterday to demolish Korea 3-0. More matches to come. Worth a watch, except that Channel 7 seems not to have paid for the matches so you'll need to find it elsewhere.
