Denver judge denies 'eleventh hour' request to bar SJSU volleyball player from MW tournament

A San Jose State volleyball player believed to be transgender is eligible for this week's Mountain West women's volleyball tournament, according to a Denver judge's ruling.

U.S. District Judge S. Kato Crews denied an "eleventh hour" request for a preliminary injunction on Monday after listening to oral arguments from both parties last week. The lawsuit was initially filed against the Mountain West Conference and San Jose State staff members Nov. 13 by 11 current and former Mountain West women's volleyball players and an SJSU assistant volleyball coach.

The lawsuit took issue with the Mountain West's transgender participation policy and claimed the plaintiffs' Title IX and First Amendment rights have been violated because an athlete they say is transgender is participating on the SJSU women's volleyball team.

The Coloradoan found no public statements by the university or the volleyball player confirming or denying whether the player is transgender.

In Crews' ruling, he wrote that “no defendant disputed that SJSU rosters a trans woman volleyball player.”

The Coloradoan has only named plaintiffs and defendants in the lawsuit. The player plaintiffs claim is transgender is not a named defendant and is not being named by the Coloradoan.

Mikaela Shiffrin reveals she came 'damn close' to puncturing organs in Killington crash - 'Incredibly thankful'

Mikaela Shiffrin has revealed that she came "damn close" to puncturing some organs in her crash on her second run of the giant slalom event in Killington, Vermont last week. The 29-year-old American, who was going for a record-extending 100th World Cup win, fell and crashed nastily into the safety netting, suffering a "puncture wound" to her abdomen and "severe muscle trauma".

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has said she is "incredibly thankful" that her crash at Killington, Vermont last week was not worse.

Shiffrin, a two-time Olympic champion, suffered a "puncture wound to the right side of her abdomen" and "severe muscle trauma" during the giant slalom event in New England, where she was looking to extend her record number of World Cup wins to 100.

She had been in a good position to do so before she fell and crashed heavily into the safety netting on her second run.

In a graphic and detailed update, the American revealed that she and her team believed the apparatus to blame for her puncture injury was her ski pole, and she said that she was "just glad it’s limited to muscle damage."

Three Brazilian pairs, all arriving from the qualifications, achieved a complete sweep of the women’s podium at the Marica Futures on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. Verena Figueira de Oliveira & Kyce Mikaele Martins Silva, Flavia Moura Santos Cezar & Fabrine Conceicao dos Santos and Emanuely Pereira Cardoso & Quemile Vieira de Souza earned gold, silver and bronze, respectively. The host nation triumphed in the men’s competition as well, with Igor De Carvalho Borges & Felipe Alves Pereira claiming the trophy. Ukraine’s Anton Moiseiev & Vitalii Savvin took silver, while Paraguay’s Gonzalo Melgarejo & Giuliano Massare Canillas picked up bronze.

Igor decorated his Beach Pro Tour debut with gold. It was also the first gold, but overall second Tour medal, for his partner Felipe Alves, who took silver at last year’s Miguel Pereira Futures. In Marica, the two won all five of their matches to climb to the top of the podium. One of the two sets the 10th-seeded Brazilian pair lost along the way was in their 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 15-10) win over fellow Brazilians, qualifiers Pedro Henrique Resende Santos & Johann Ferdinand Dohmann. Igor & Felipe Alves followed up with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) sweep of the final against fourth-seeded Moiseiev & Savvin.

The 20-year-old Ukrainians reached the gold medal showdown on a 4-1 win-loss record. In the semifinals, they achieved a 2-0 (21-17, 23-21) upset of second-seeded Gonzalo & Giuliano of Paraguay to secure their first Beach Pro Tour podium.

Gonzalo & Giuliano bounced back with a 2-1 (21-18, 12-21, 15-13) victory over Pedro Henrique & Johann in the bronze medal match and also celebrated their first ever Beach Pro Tour podium.

ItÂ’s not just soccer anymore. Brazil is finding World Cup success in skiing now, too.

Lucas Pinheiro Braathen became the first Brazilian skier to finish on a World Cup podium when he placed second in a giant slalom in Beaver Creek, Colorado, on Sunday.

Pinheiro Braathen celebrated the achievement in truly Brazilian — and Pinheiro — style: with a samba dance on the podium, the Brazilian flag wrapped around his waist and cowboy boots on his feet.

“What a moment to break out a dance in front of all these amazing fans here today. I came onto the circuit to make a difference. I came here to be myself and hopefully be an inspiration to the outcasts out there, to the people that feel a bit different, to follow their own path,” Pinheiro Braathen said.

“It’s such a privilege to be able to be the first one to bring the Brazilian flag — something that I’m so proud of — up to a winter sport World Cup podium,” he added.

China-bound Praia back at the top in the Superliga

Dentil Praia Clube secured a massive victory on Tuesday, on the eve of their trip to China, to compete at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship 2024, beating in-state rivals Gerdau Minas for first place in the Brazilian Women’s Superliga.

The Minas Gerais rivals, which will both represent Brazil at next week’s event in Hangzhou, fought week in, week out for the top of the standings and the decision came down to their last match in the first round, which ended with a narrow 3-2 (15-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12) victory by Praia, who were at home on Tuesday, playing in Uberlândia.

Praia are now one point ahead of Minas (26 to 25) and are guaranteed to finish the first round of the regular season at the top of the standings as, even though third-placed Osasco São Cristovão Saúde could still get to the same 26 points, they would have fewer victories.
