Vuelta a Espana: Roglic wins stage eight and Kuss claims red jersey

Primoz Roglic powered past reigning champion Remco Evenepoel to win the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España after a tough fight on the climb to Xorret del Cati on Saturday.

Roglic’s Jumbo Visma teammate Sepp Kuss took the overall leader’s red jersey after Lenny Martinez of Groupama-FDJ cracked near the finish of the 165km stage from Denia.

The peloton reeled in four breakaway riders at the start of the brutal final climb and battle commenced among the general classification contenders with Jumbo-Visma again dominant. American Kuss was the first to attack before Belgium’s Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step) took it on over the summit on the downhill race to the finish line.

Evenepoel was unable to hold off three-time Vuelta winner Roglic in the final sprint to the line but looked strong as he came home in second place. Spain’s Juan Ayuso was third. Co-favourite Jonas Vingegaard, also of Jumbo Visma, was fifth with Kuss seventh.

Vuelta a Espana: Lennard Kamna takes stage nine as weather hits final climb

Germany’s Lennard Kämna completed his set of Grand Tour stage wins with a solo effort on stage nine of the Vuelta a España.

The Bora-Hansgrohe rider, 26, emerged the strongest from an eight‑man break on the tough final climb to Collado de la Cruz de Caravaca. The hilly stage from Cartagena was hit by poor weather, with general classification times taken more than 2km from the finish.

Kämna’s opportunism left behind Matteo Sobrero (Jayco-AlUla) and Chris Hamilton (DSM-Firmenich) to add to his previous stage wins at the 2022 Giro d’Italia and 2020 Tour de France. Jumbo Visma’s Sepp Kuss held on to the leader’s red jersey heading into Monday’s rest day.

Chanettee Wannasaen, 19, wins LPGA 2023 Portland Classic as qualifier

The 19-year-old rookie was a Monday qualifier for this week’s event at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Oregon but left with the trophy after a memorable week in the Pacific Northwest. Wannasaen shot her season-low round of 66 on Friday and went one better with a Saturday 65 before a blistering bogey-free 9-under 63 on Sunday sealed the deal at 26 under for her first LPGA win, the 10th player to accomplish the feat this season.

A native of Chiang Mai, Thailand, Wannasaen last won in June of 2022 at the Trust Golf Links Series – Ramside Hall on the Ladies European Tour Access Series after a pair of wins earlier in the year on the Thai LPGA Tour at the Singha Pattaya Ladies Open and Thai LPGA Championship. She made the cut in her first two LPGA starts in February and March of this year at the LPGA Drive On Championship (T-57) and Honda LPGA Thailand (T-51), respectively, but hadn’t made a cut in nine starts since.

“I miss cut about like nine events in LPGA tournament this year,” said Wannasaen on Saturday. “That get me more confident.”

But with a bogey-free closing round that included seven birdies and an eagle, she took home the $225,000 top prize after winning just over $14,700 in 2023 LPGA prize money until this week.

Vuelta a Espana: Ganna storms to clear win in time trial as Evenepoel gains

Filippo Ganna won stage 10 of the Vuelta a España on Tuesday, a 25.8km individual time trial in Valladolid, finishing 16sec ahead of Remco Evenepoel.

Ganna, riding for Ineos Grenadiers, put down an early marker but even the Italian knew it would all come down to the final riders out on the course, those at the top of the general classification. “At the moment I’m happy, obviously. We’ll wait for the end when the big riders come,” Ganna said at the end of his ride.

Evenepoel’s second place moved the defending champion into third overall and he gained more than one minute on the leader, Sepp Kuss. Kuss went into the stage with a 43sec lead over Marc Soler, with Evenepoel in fourth more than two minutes adrift.

    Just for fun.

Mexico City Marathon expels 11,000 runners for cutting sections of course

More than a third of runners at this year’s Mexico City Marathon have been expelled after organisers say they cut out sections of the 26.2 mile course.

An investigation was launched after complaints that runners had used cars, public transport and bikes to cheat during the race on 27 August. Tracking data then showed that thousands of participants had not passed some of the 5km checkpoints that monitor whether runners have completed the entire race.

“The Mexico City Sports Institute informs that it will proceed to identify those cases in which participants of the XL Mexico City Marathon Telcel 2023 have demonstrated an unsportsmanlike attitude during the event and will invalidate their registration times,” the organisers said in a statement to Marca.

“This great event not only represents an outstanding celebration for all the inhabitants of the capital, but also an occasion to reaffirm the transcendental values of sport.”

Runners World reported that some participants insisted that they had not cheated but rather the trackers were faulty and did not register at checkpoints.

The Mexico City Marathon is one of the most popular races in North America and holds gold status with World Athletics, which the governing body awards to races that have high standards in planning and organisation. The race has expelled runners for cheating before: in 2017 6,000 were expelled for not completing the full distance.

None of the elite runners in the race are believed to have been expelled. In the 1980 Boston Marathon, Rosie Ruiz had her victory stripped from her after it was found she had snuck on to the course shortly before the finish line.

Vuelta a Espana: Herrada breaks rivals on stiff climb to grab glory on stage 11

Jesús Herrada was strongest at the end of a climbing finish to win stage 11 of the Vuelta a España, a 163.5km ride from Lerma to La Laguna Negra, on Wednesday.

The stage was characterised by numerous early breakaway attempts, all foiled by the peloton. With almost 50km gone, a 26-man group, including Cofidis’s Herrada, made the break which counted. Romain Grégoire of Groupama-FDJ finished second, three seconds behind Herrada, with Andreas Kron of Lotto-Dstny third.

The main contenders for the overall lead all came in almost six minutes behind the winner. The American rider Sepp Kuss retained the leader’s red jersey for Jumbo-Visma.

Vuelta a Espana: Juan Sebastian Molano denies Kaden Groves in stage 12 sprint

Colombia’s Juan Sebastián Molano sprinted to victory on stage 12 of the Vuelta a España as Kaden Groves missed the chance of a third win on Thursday.

On the last day before the race heads back into the mountains, Molano (UAE Team Emirates) was delivered by his team into the final sprint and powered across the line. “Thanks to my team for their work. They were amazing today,” the 28-year-old said after the finish.

The Australian sprinter Groves was favourite to win the flat 151km stage from Olvega to Zaragoza, across Spain’s parched plains, but ended up in second place. Molano, who was disqualified from the 2022 Critérium du Dauphiné for striking another rider, adds to his stage 21 victory in last year’s Vuelta.

Jonas Vingegaard tames Tourmalet on Vuelta stage 13 as Evenepoel falls away

Jonas Vingegaard led a Jumbo-Visma 1-2-3 on the Tourmalet to win stage 13 of the Vuelta a España, on a dramatic day which saw Remco Evenepoel’s challenge fall apart completely in the Pyrenees.

Friday’s stage began in Formigal and featured three other climbs before a brutal final ascent of the Col du Tourmalet, one of cycling’s most famous challenges. The relentless climbing and downhill racing took its toll on many, including last year’s winner Evenepoel, who was left behind by his rivals.

Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) first ran into trouble on the day’s second climb, the Col d’Aubisque, and only lost further ground from there. The Belgian crossed the line 27 minutes behind the leaders and drops to 19th in the overall standings, with his hopes of defending the title in tatters.

“It was just one of those days where my tank was empty,” Evenepoel admitted afterwards. “We gave it everything and I have no regrets. I want to thank my teammates who stayed with me the whole day and left everything out there for me.”

This was another day of dominance for the Jumbo-Visma team, who controlled the stage throughout. The overall leader, Sepp Kuss, was joined by Primoz Roglic and Vingegaard in the leading group on the final climb and the trio easily saw off an attempted counterattack by Movistar’s Enric Mas.

Vuelta a Espana: Evenepoel snatches stage 14 after GC meltdown on Friday

The defending champion Remco Evenepoel bounced back from his Vuelta a España meltdown the day before in the Pyrenees to take a superb victory on the mountainous 14th stage to the ski resort of Larra-Belagua on Saturday.

The Belgian rider’s GC hopes may be over after shipping 27 minutes on Friday’s brutal climbs, but he responded in style to hold off France’s Romain Bardet after the two had broken away from an escape group on the Col Hourcère.

Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) stayed on the wheel of Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) for the first half of the 9.5km climb to the finish but had no answer when the Belgian poured on the power with 3.5km remaining, winning by more than a minute.

Evenepoel’s masterclass on the 156.5km route spanning the France-Spain border put him in firm control of the climbing standings as he scooped up stacks of points over the day’s four categorised ascents.

Vuelta a Espana: Rui Costa lands first Grand Tour win in decade after stage 15

Rui Costa of Intermarché-Circus-Wanty won stage 15 of the Vuelta a España in a sprint finish on Sunday, while defending champion Remco Evenepoel fell short in his valiant effort to continue his recovery from a meltdown earlier this week.

Former world road champion Costa held off Lennard Kamna) and Santiago Buitrago following the 158.5km ride from Pamplona to Lekunberri, as Evenepoel ended in fourth.

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2023 - Mostar

    Location

A firm favourite on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series calendar, Mostar delivered three days of adrenaline-fuelled aerial action when the 24 elite divers returned for the competition’s eighth visit to the historic city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Framed against a familiar backdrop of the picturesque old town and the rugged terrain of the surrounding mountains, the divers performed in soaring temperatures, adding an extra layer of competitive heat to the penultimate stop on the 2023 calendar.

    Who won?

Shock and shake-ups were the order of the day in both the men's and women's categories, as Mostar served up some serious heat to bring the fight for the King Kahekili trophies closer than ever before. In the women's category, Molly Carlson pulled out all the stops to secure her second win of the season, preventing defending champion Rhiannan Iffland from raising the trophy at the penultimate stop. In the men's category, wildcard Carlos Gimeno became the star of Stari Most with a first-ever "dream" epic win in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

Vingegaard earns emotional Vuelta stage win for ‘best friend’ Van Hooydonck

Jonas Vingegaard pulled clear on the uphill finish to win stage 16 on an emotional day at the Vuelta a España.

Vingegaard dedicated his victory to “best friend” and teammate Nathan van Hooydonck, who was injured in a car crash in Belgium on Tuesday. A later Jumbo-Visma statement said that Van Hooydonck’s condition was “not critical” in hospital and he had not suffered serious injuries.

“I’m just happy to win today,” the Dane said afterwards. “We had some terrible news this morning. I wanted to win for my best friend today.” Vingegaard and his Hungarian teammate, Attila Valter, both told Eurosport that Van Hooydonck was “awake” in hospital after being given an update over the team radio while racing.

Primoz Roglic climbs to Vuelta stage 17 win as Vingegaard cuts gap to Kuss

Primoz Roglic won a gruelling mountain stage 17 of Vuelta a España ahead of his teammate Jonas Vingegaard, as their Jumbo-Visma colleague, Sepp Kuss, retained the overall leader’s jersey by eight seconds.

The 124.5km course started at Ribadesella and featured two category-one ascents before finishing through the clouds on Altu de l’Angliru, with Jumbo-Visma again showing strength to last the distance.

The Soudal-QuickStep duo of Remco Evenepoel and Mattia Cattaneo were among those who made early attacks along with Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates. Evenepoel reached the top of Alto del Cordal as he looked to cement his place in the blue-dotted climber’s jersey, but both he and Soler were eventually reeled in by the peloton on the assent up l’Angliru.

Roglic attacked heading into the final three kilometres, but Vingegaard and Kuss stayed with him as the clouds rolled in. Kuss, celebrating his 29th birthday, could not keep up as the Tour de France champion Vingegaard and Roglic crafted a lead before the Slovenian went on to take the stage win.

Vuelta a Espana: Jumbo-Visma steady the ship for Sepp Kuss after storm

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel claimed his third victory in this year’s Vuelta a España with a solo attack on a mountainous stage 18 and Jumbo-Visma’s Sepp Kuss moved a step closer to winning his first Grand Tour.

Evenepoel blasted out of a breakaway group on the first of two climbs of the Puerto de La Cruz de Linares late in the 179km ride from Pola de Allande and was in a class of his own. The peloton, featuring the Jumbo-Visma trio of Kuss, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic, finished nearly 10 minutes back, with Kuss emerging still in the maillot rojo after surviving the last big day in the mountains unscathed.

The American Kuss, who was shepherded through the dramatic Asturian landscape by his illustrious teammates, even extended his lead over the Tour de France champion, Vingegaard – who sat up in the final metres – to 17 seconds and is just over one minute ahead of the Giro d’Italia champion, Roglic, with both of them acting as super domestiques.

Vuelta a Espana: Kuss closes on glory as Dainese avoids crash to win stage 19

Alberto Dainese of Team DSM-Firmenich narrowly avoided a massive crash in the final kilometre to sprint to victory in stage 19 of the Vuelta a España, while Sepp Kuss of Jumbo-Visma finished safely in the peloton to retain the overall lead.

As the Vuelta enters its home stretch, riders left the mountains behind for a flat 177.5km ride from La Bañeza to Íscar, speeding through countryside at 80km/h at one point. A breakaway group of four were caught with 20km to go before the teams set themselves up for the sprint, with Ineos Grenadiers, Movistar and Bahrain Victorious driving the bunch.

Once the riders progressed through a final right-hand bend, they had a straight 2.2km run to the finish line where Kaden Groves, who has won two stages, was involved in a crash where several riders fell after a touch of wheels. Filippo Ganna was in the ideal position at the front and opened up the final sprint, but Dainese timed his sprint to perfection to edge out his fellow Italian by milliseconds.

“We did a super job … today we executed the plan, 100%,” said Dainese. “It was really unlucky to lose a couple of guys in the crash but until that point I was in the perfect position, I was where I wanted to be. I knew there was a bit of a headwind so I just let Ganna and the other guys go a bit early and then I was waiting for my moment to go in the wind. I’m super happy to finish a hard Vuelta in this way.”

Sepp Kuss set to win Vuelta a Espana as Wout Poels takes stage 20

Wout Poels of the Netherlands took victory in the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a España in Guadarrama, as, with only the ceremonial stage to Madrid remaining, American climber Sepp Kuss will complete an unprecedented Grand Tour grand slam for his sponsors, Jumbo-Visma.

Yet for all the high fives, warm hugs and fist bumps from superstar teammates, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic during this year’s Vuelta, Kuss may still have spent much of the race expecting to pull a knife from his back.

The 29-year-old, leader of the Vuelta since stage eight, has long been the pair’s most loyal servant, yet on the climb of the Angliru, when Tour de France champion Vingegaard and Giro d’Italia winner Roglic noticed Kuss struggling, they repaid their debt to him by accelerating towards the finish.

As the race reached its denouement, Kuss’s overall lead was left hanging by a thread. Outrage, both within the race convoy and on social media, at the Jumbo-Visma team’s callousness, swiftly followed.

Sepp Kuss wins Vuelta a Espana with Kaden Groves taking sprint finish

Sepp Kuss became the first American to win one of Europe’s Grand Tours since Chris Horner in 2013, arriving in Madrid on Sunday evening as champion of the 2023 Vuelta a España.

As the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider Kaden Groves won the Vuelta’s final sprint finish in the Spanish capital, Kuss’s Jumbo-Visma team took their third Grand Tour of the year, after winning the Giro d’Italia, through Primoz Roglic, and the Tour de France, through Jonas Vingegaard.

The Dutch team also took a clean sweep in the overall standings, with Vingegaard and Roglic taking second and third overall, respectively, in the Vuelta.

The team’s unprecedented dominance of the 2023 season has fuelled some scepticism, particularly after their rider Michel Hessmann tested positive for a banned diuretic in June and was investigated by German authorities.

Speaking at his winner’s press conference, Kuss was clear in his rejection of performance enhancement. “For me personally, cheating or doping is just out of the question because it’s not even sports for me then,” the Coloradan said.

“Part of sports is losing, and of course you want to win, but if you’re doing something that’s prohibited or cheating then you’re afraid of losing which, I think, is one of the most important things about sports: accepting that sometimes you’re not good enough.”

Suzann Pettersen hailed the “legends” of her European Solheim Cup team after the trophy was retained on a hugely dramatic day in Andalucía. Carlota Ciganda, a Spaniard, holed the putt which ensured a 14-14 tie with the US and the lifting of the cup by Europe for a record-breaking third time in a row.

“Does it get any better than this? This is a dream come true,” Pettersen said. “We had a massive challenge ahead of us. We have created history yet again in the Solheim Cup. These girls are legends.”

Pettersen’s team recovered from a 4-0 whitewash in the Friday opening session to sit at 8-8 before the singles. “I wonder if it was almost a nice wake‑up call for all of us,” Pettersen said. “We have all been on a high for a few years now and maybe that was good. I believe in fate, so maybe that was meant to happen.

“I just said: ‘You get knocked down, you stand back up.’ Life can be tough but it’s how you stand back up that shows character. I think it really shows the character of this team.”

Stacy Lewis, the US captain, said she and the LPGA Commissioner, Mollie Samaan, discussed during the closing ceremony whether retention of the cup in the event of a draw was a fair outcome. The same applies in Ryder Cups.

“We were talking about when it is a tie, should it be a playoff, should it be a retain the cup,” Lewis said. “I don’t know. It obviously would be better TV. It would be a better experience for the fans, whether it was a team playoff or something like that. I think that would be pretty cool.

“But if you want to stick with the history of the event and history of what the men do as well, you probably stick with retaining the cup. I don’t know how I feel about that either way, to be honest.”

Lewis insisted she was proud of her team. “Those girls played their hearts out today. Things really could have been quite a bit different with one or two shots here and there.”
