    2022 23 National Hockey League

NHL- Your home for hockey. https://twitter.com/NHL

    Prediction (top 10)

Mark Stone scored the tiebreaking goal with 24.9 seconds to play, and the Vegas Golden Knights punctuated coach Bruce Cassidy's debut with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

Arthur Kaliyev tied it for the Kings with 7:02 left, but the Knights capitalized in the waning seconds after the Kings made an ill-advised move up the ice instead of running out the clock for overtime. Chandler Stephenson controlled a turnover at mid-ice and carried it in for Stone, who whipped a shot past Jonathan Quick to cap Vegas' three-goal third period.

"We had our breakdowns, but that's just learning curves,'' Stone said. "If we can cut those in half, we'll get it done. Power play got a little talking-to in between periods there. We stepped up for it in the third.''

    ___________

An offseason can make for short memories, and in the closing minutes of the Lightning’s 3-1 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday night, the crowd at Madison Square Garden started serenading the opponents with the chant, “Igor’s better.”

The NHL kicked off opening night with a rematch of the last season’s Eastern Conference final, allowing fans to revisit the debate of who is the league’s best goaltender between the Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy, with two Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe and a Vezina on his resume, and reigning Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin.

Below are just a couple of games from yesterday

The Colorado Avalanche scored four power-play goals in a 5-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks in the season opener for both teams at Ball Arena on Wednesday.

    ____________

The Boston Bruins opened up their 2022-23 season Wednesday night with a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.

Opening up its season shorthanded, Boston played far from a dominant game, but got everything it needed from its biggest stars.

Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak, Taylor Hall and David Krejci combined for four Bruins goals and nine points total, doing exactly what a contending team should expect out of its top two lines. Boston quickly got its first power-play goal out of the way, with Bergeron firing a rebound past Capitals goalie Darcy Kuemper. Pastrnak quickly added a goal of his own to give Boston a 2-0 lead by the end of the opening frame.

    A couple.

New York Islanders drop 2022 home opener to Florida Panthers

Panthers 3, Islanders 1: Home opener with some adjustment pains

Two teams adjusting to new head coaches rolled into Elmont and put on an uneven show for the New York Islanders home opener. The Florida Panthers prevailed, 3-1, on the strength of a go-ahead goal early in the third period, just 30 seconds after Noah Dobson had tied the game.

For the first game under Lane Lambert, it was a work in progress. That’s about all you can say at this point. The Isles had stretches where they looked cohesive and like they knew what they were supposed to do and wanted to do. There was sloppy play on both sides, too. And of course, the Panthers are a formidable lineup, so the chances of the Isles looking like a finely oiled machine were slim.

    ____________

New York Rangers run Wild in Minnesota with 7-3 blowout

The New York Rangers opened up their first road trip of the year with a bonanza of goals against the Minnesota Wild to spoil their home-opener.

Chris Kreider would bookend the scoring with his first two of the season. Sandwiched in between were goals by Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, Filip Chytil, Vincent Trocheck, and Kaapo Kakko.

Couple of games from the better teams last night.

Stamkos scores 2, Lightning beat Blue Jackets 5-2

Steven Stamkos scored twice, and Corey Perry and Ross Colton each had a goal and an assist, as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 Friday for their first win of the season.

Cal Foote also scored for the Lightning, and Vladislav Namestnikov, Alex Killorn and Mikhail Sergachev each added two assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 26 shots.

“It was a well-rounded game,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “It was something we needed, and now we’re just going to have to carry it into tomorrow.”

    ____________

Aho's late goal leads Hurricanes past Sharks 2-1

Sebastian Aho scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:58 remaining in the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes handed the San Jose Sharks their third straight loss to open the season, 2-1 on Friday night.

Martin Necas scored his second goal in two games for Carolina to tie it late in the second period before Aho won it in the third when he deflected a point shot from Brett Pesce past James Reimer.

“Just a great play by Pesce taking a little second to look,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Aho beats his guy to the net and on the tape and puts it in. ... I think we got what we deserved tonight for sure.”

Don Granato paid close attention to the body language of the Buffalo Sabres as they fell behind against an aggressive, antagonistic, and highly skilled Florida Panthers team on Saturday.

What he saw - in his words - was a group of players that were "pissed off" and willing to do something about it.

    ____________

The Flyers rode the momentum of the NLCS-bound Phillies by beating the Canucks, 3-2, Saturday night.

At a packed Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies eliminated the Braves in the NLDS. The final out was shown on the Jumbotron at the Wells Fargo Center. Fans erupted and then saw a comeback from the Flyers, who improved to 2-0-0 under new head coach John Tortorella.

"You want to get our team, the hockey team out here, into those situations," Tortorella said of the Phillies' playoff party. "We were looking at them celebrating in between periods. I told the coaches, 'That's what we play for, just those few moments of you can do some of that s--- there that they're doing, that they win and they're acting like idiots and just having a blast.'

"Regular-season win, you're happy for a couple of minutes because you're getting ready for your next game. But when you do something and you get to that pinnacle right now, and they've got a couple of more steps, I get it — that's what you play sports for.

    Panthers fall short against Bruins

Jake DeBrusk scored 21 seconds into the game and added an empty-netter as the Boston Bruins beat the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Monday night.

DeBrusk also assisted on the go-ahead goal, splitting a pair of defenders in a race for the puck and feeding Patrice Bergeron with a behind-the-back pass to put Boston up 2-1 with 7:25 left in the second period.

Bergeron finished with a goal and assist for the Bruins, who improved to 3-0-0 under new coach Jim Montgomery and handed Florida its first loss of the season after opening with two wins. David Pastrnak and Trent Frederic also scored for Boston. Linus Ullmark stopped 36 shots.

    ____________

Avalanche keep goalie-challenged Wild winless in 6-3 victory

Colorado's stars have picked up where they left off last season, even with the captain sidelined.

The defending champion Avalanche are a lot to defend, a vital trait that has so far eluded the division rival Minnesota Wild.

Mikko Rantanen scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period and Nathan Mackinnon and Valeri Nichushkin each had a goal and two assists for the Avalanche, who beat Minnesota 6-3 on Monday night to keep the Wild winless.

Third-period goals by Balcers, Mahura in home opener help Florida Panthers hand Philadelphia Flyers first loss

Carter Verhaeghe scored twice, Rudolfs Balcers and Josh Mahura each had third-period goals and the Florida Panthers held on to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Balcers’ goal, his first with Florida after signing in the offseason, put the Panthers on top for good. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 shots for the Panthers, who, like the Flyers, have won three of four to open the season.

Avs late push doesn’t stop Jets

The Avs fell behind early, surged on late, but then ended up on the losing side in the end to the Winnipeg Jets, who got the win 4-3 in OT. Neal Pionk was the hero for the Jets as he scored twice, including the OT winner which sealed Colorado’s fate.

Bruins Wrap: Linus Ullmark, Taylor Hall Lead Way To Shootout Win

Coming off their first loss of the season, the Boston Bruins responded by topping the Anaheim Ducks, 2-1 in a shootout, on Thursday night at TD Garden.

The Bruins improved to 4-1-0 on the season while the Ducks lost their fourth straight and now own a 1-3-1 record.

    ___________

Wild get first win on Kirill Kaprizov's overtime winner

Kirill Kaprizov put the Minnesota Wild in the win column for the first time this season when he scored the game-winning goal in overtime for a 4-3 victory Thursday night in St. Paul.

Kaprizov netted the winning goal when the Wild had a 4-on-3 advantage after Kaprizov drew a penalty. Minnesota maintained possession of the puck and the delayed penalty gave Kaprizov enough time to rip a shot into the back of the net to stop a three-game slide to start the season. Kaprizov finished with a goal and two assists.

Regardless of the outcome, the most important result may have been goalie Marc-Andre Fleury returning to form. Fleury allowed 11 goals in four periods to start the season but was on point against the Canucks with 23 saves. Of the three goals he allowed, two were forgivable and he made a number of highlight-reel saves.

Steven Stamkos scored another power play goal, Brayden Point scored twice, including a game-winning goal in overtime. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 36 of the opponent’s shots.

Kuhlman scores tiebreaking goal, Kraken beat Avalanche 3-2

Karson Kuhlman scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and the Seattle Kraken beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Friday night.

Jaden Schwartz and Jared McCann scored 22 seconds apart in the second period and added an assist each for Seattle. Philipp Grubauer had 17 saves before being replaced by Martin Jones midway through the third period. Jones got the win with just one save.

Not quite a vintage Lightning performance, but the victory still counts

So that was kind of ugly, but in a totally inspiring way.

The Lightning were outshot by the Islanders on Saturday night. By a ton. They gave the puck away more, they were outhit, they blew one lead early and nearly blew another late.

And yet, by the end of the night, the Lightning were celebrating a 5-3 victory that got them back to .500 after starting the season with three losses in four games.

“We didn’t execute,” coach Jon Cooper said. “I thought we were extremely opportunistic.

“But, in saying that, you’ve got to find ways to win when you’re not at your best. And the Islanders, they threw everything at us. I thought (goaltender Brian Elliott) was a wall back there for us. But you’re going to have to grind out some points when you don’t have your ‘A’ game, and we did that (Saturday night).”

    Avalanche vs. Golden Knights

Nichushkin scores winner, Avalanche beat Golden Knights 3-2

Valeri Nichushkin’s third-period goal held up as the winner for the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night.

Shortly after Nichushkin pushed Colorado’s lead to two goals, Vegas’ Chandler Stephenson cut the deficit to one. But Colorado goaltender Alexandar Georgiev was clutch down the stretch to help the Avalanche bounce back from a home loss to Seattle the night before.

Thread that i posted on Canucks.com forum Those who did not want a GM change. - Canucks Talk - Canucks Community

All we needed was a coaching change. There was a few of us who did not like the idea of firing Benning.

I relaunched my account specifically to protest the idea of firing Benning. For one reason. Because i was afraid of who would replace him. It would sure be nice to have firing the GM as an option now. But we spend that option already.

To be fair , i don't think Rutherfraud has done anything that Benning wouldn't have done yet. But that is going to change. Everyone in the league knows that Jimmy is desperate.

Make sure your fire insurance is up to date if you live in the city.

A senile old man and his friends are running this team. I'm just going to pretend that its a lockout year.

Doubt it, because he's the President of H.O., and not the GM.

The JT Miller signing will go down as one of the worst in Canucks history. Should have got a top defenceman and a pick for him while he had value. He's a cancer in the dressing room and starts blaming others when he plays like shit. Worst passer on the team.

Don't count them out yet, they've got huge offensive power and Anaheim were 1-7-2 in their first 10 games and won the division under Boudreau. St. Louis were dead last in January and won the cup. Starting on the road sucks too. I still think they will make the playoffs.

Lomberg scores in 3rd to help Panthers beat Islanders 3-2

Ryan Lomberg scored early in the third period and the Florida Panthers held on to beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Sunday.

Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen also scored for the Panthers, and Spencer Knight finished with 23 saves. Florida beat New York for the second time this season after a 3-1 win in the season opener on Oct. 13.

Anders Lee scored two power-play goals for the Islanders, who lost their third straight. Semyon Varlamov had 29 saves. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...5a5_story.html

Detroit Red Wings rebound with convincing victory over Anaheim Ducks

After a disappointing and disheartening loss in Chicago 48 hours earlier, coach Derek Lalonde was curious to see how his Red Wings would respond.

The Wings blew a two-goal lead in Chicago and got away from the way they've wanted to play. It was definitely eye-opening losing that way to a team the Wings should likely beat.

But Lalonde was pleased with what he saw Sunday.

Two power-play goals in the first period got the Wings going early and led them to a 5-1 victory over Anaheim at Little Caesars Arena.

    Caps Double Up Devils, 6-3

For the third time in a span of four games, the Capitals erupted for four goals in a single period on Monday night against the Devils in New Jersey. The Caps needed their first two four-goal periods to erase multi-goal deficits in comeback victories, but their Monday night outburst in Newark broke open a 1-1 game in the middle period, spurring them to a 6-3 victory, their first on the road this season.

Golden Knights Phil Kessel ties record in win vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said it best after the game. “What would be a better script?”

Phil Kessel, playing in his record-tying 989th consecutive game, scored his first goal with the Knights 3:16 into Monday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs to send the announced crowd of 17,989 into a frenzy. It was also the 400th of Kessel’s career, making him just the 13th American-born player to reach that mark.

It seemed almost too perfect. Because it was.

Kessel’s goal was disallowed after Toronto challenged the play was offside, limiting him to only one milestone. The Knights didn’t let that deflate them.

Left wing Chandler Stephenson’s go-ahead goal 42 seconds into the third period gave them a 3-1 win against the Maple Leafs on Kessel’s historic night.

What's the problemo with me Canucks? Yet to win a game with all that talent. If one player can make or break a team it has to be Quinne Hughes.

    Go Canucks, slow.

Luke Schenn as a top pairing defenseman. Hughs is injured and even he isn't great on D. He just out scores his deficiency on D. I don't think Demko is playing very good either

But in the end , it's a game of inches and luck. Some teams are cursed. Some aren't.

You're right about Shenn, and he's a leader. About the only other player I could see being captain, other than Horvat.

Rathbone looks improved too, full of confidence, and is ready for a spot on the team.

The Canucks play great "with" the puck, and shitty "without" it. It ain't Demkos fault either.

Elliot Friedmans podcast was all about the Canucks. Worth a listen. He thinks we should tank this year and go for Bedard. Shit the Bedard. Retard for Badard. Dishonor for Connor. His name is Connor Bedard. He's almost a Mcdavid level prospect. #1 pick for 2023. And he'd from Vancouver. I dont mind the idea of tanking for just one year. The Canucks are the 4th youngest team in the league allegedly. So a full rebuild doesnt make sense. Even if we don't get Bedard, they say this 2023 draft is deep as fuck. 4-5 #1 level players.

Still gotta go through the lottery (though with better odds) even if they finish last. And we know their luck on lotteries.

    He's possibly better than McDavid.

A win will get them back on track, but we need to trade for a top defenceman.

Rodrigues scores in SO as Georgiev, Avalanche beat Rangers

Evan Rodrigues scored in the deciding goal in the shootout and Alexandar Georgiev made 44 saves to beat his former team as the Colorado Avalanche edged the New York Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Rodrigues beat Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin in the fourth round of the tiebreaker before Georgiev denied Alexis Lafreniere’s attempt to seal the victory. Mikko Rantanen also scored in the shootout for Colorado and Artemi Panarin tallied for the Rangers.

Valeri Nichushkin and Logan O’Connor scored in regulation for the Avalanche.

Barclay Goodrow had a goal and an assist and Adam Fox also scored for the Rangers, who have lost three in a row — all at home. Shesterkin finished with 42 saves.

For the second time this season and in a seven-game span, the Boston Bruins are riding a three-game win streak

The Boston Bruins won what, at times, felt like a Stanley Cup Playoff game that had little margin for error and beat the Dallas Stars 3-1 on Tuesday night. The Taylor Hall-David Krejci-David Pastrnak line was a major factor again.

Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing the last four games with his sixth concussion since the last game of the 2017 regular season.
