Panthers ran out of steam after a legendary run. No chance without Tkachuk.

Vegas deserved to win, but their fans didn't. I mean, what the fuck? They didn't even boo Bettman when he presented the cup. Definitely not "real" hockey fans.

    brutal

I thought I would see a nice write-up on the Panthers from the Miami Herald.

    But Nope,.........

There will be a time to look back and appreciate what the Florida Panthers did this postseason in reaching the Stanley Cup Final as a No. 8 seed.

That time was not Tuesday night in a Game 5 in Las Vegas that could only have gone worse for Florida if a sudden sinkhole in the ice had swallowed the Panthers whole.

The Cats were beaten 9-3 as the Vegas Golden Knights raised the Cup in only their sixth year, denying Florida its first such honor in its 29th season. It wasn’t close. Vegas won the series 4-1. Florida was outscored, 26-12. Brutal.

Vegas celebrates. its first major sports title

The Las Vegas Golden Knights destroyed the Florida Panthers, 9-3, on Tuesday night at home to deliver the city of Las Vegas its first-ever major sports championship.

Why it matters: The Knights won the Stanley Cup in just their sixth season, becoming the fastest team to win a title in the National Hockey League's modern history.

    • Vegas topped the mark held by the Philadelphia Flyers, whose 1974 title came seven years after they were part of the NHL's six-team expansion in 1967.
    • The Edmonton Oilers took just five seasons to win their first NHL championship after joining the league in 1979, but they had already existed for eight years in the defunct World Hockey Association.

Between the lines: Six original members of the 2017-18 Knights were on the ice Tuesday, including Jonathan Marchessault, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP (25 points).

What they're saying: "The look in my teammates' eyes when I got [the Stanley Cup] — one of the craziest feelings I've ever had," said captain Mark Stone, who had a hat trick. "To know that I'm doing it with my 25 to 30 best friends makes it that much more special."

The other side: The Panthers fell to 0-2 in Stanley Cup Finals and became the second Miami franchise in the last two days to see their Cinderella run end in five games at the hands of the West's No. 1 seed.

    • Miami is the fifth metro area to lose the National Basketball Association and NHL championship series in the same year.

    • The other four: Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks (2016), Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers (1980), New York Knicks and Rangers (1972), Boston Celtics and Bruins (1958).

Of note … Injury reports released as soon as the Cup Final ends are always a great reminder that hockey players are a different breed.

    • According to Panthers coach Paul Maurice, Aaron Ekblad broke his foot, popped his shoulder out twice, passed a concussion test and tore his oblique all in the playoffs. He missed one game.
    • Matthew Tkachuk, who missed Game 5, played Game 4 with a fractured sternum, Maurice revealed. "They gave everything they had," he said.

Feel good for those Vegas fans who've been waiting for a cup for a grand total of 6 grueling years.

The tackiest least prestigious team in pro sport.

I couldn't give a flaming fiddlers satanic demonic fuck about this final.

I had to look it up

It might be more than a few years.

First couple years they might be able to fill the seats (new/different) but I don’t know if they’ll be able to keep a large enough fan base after the newness wears off.

Hope they are able to turn things around.

Police foil alleged mass shooting threat hours before Stanley Cup final

Las Vegas Metro police arrested a man who threatened a mass shooting at the Stanley Cup Final hours before the Vegas Golden Knights clinched the championship, sources told Nexstar’s KLAS.

Just before noon on Tuesday, police responded to a Las Vegas business for a report of a person, later identified as Matthew DeSavio, 33, who was threatening a mass shooting at the Stanley Cup Final, documents said.

The person who called police told officers that DeSavio had stalked them for about a decade, officers said. DeSavio later showed up to the business where officers arrested him, according to documents obtained by KLAS Wednesday.

DeSavio also posted threatening messages about the game on Facebook, police said.

“I’m coming for you guys tonight and I hope you get every [expletive] police officer in Vegas Golden Knights there to defend you!” one message said, according to police. “Hope Sin City is ready for the Mandalay Bay massacre part duex [sic].”

Another person contacted police, seeing Facebook posts where DeSavio claimed “to want to conduct a mass shooting at T-Mobile Arena,” police said.

Fifty-eight people were shot and killed during the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Oct. 1, 2017, on the Las Vegas Strip. Two people later died from injuries they suffered that night, bringing the death toll to 60. It was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Hundreds more were injured in the shooting.

In another post, DeSavio reportedly wrote, “I warned y’all October 1st was just a preview,” police said.

Police arrested DeSavio outside of the business, about five hours before the game.

“As patrol officers were placing DeSavio into the patrol car, DeSavio declared several excited utterances asking if anyone had seen his Facebook posts yet and that the Knights need to win by a certain amount or he will do a repeat of the Mandalay Bay 1 October shooting,” police said.

DeSavio was adjudicated for prior stalking and harassment cases, police said.

Police did not note if DeSavio had access to any weapons, though a spokesperson said Tuesday, after DeSavio’s arrest, that they were aware of the threat.

On Oct. 26, 2022, a person also reported a “disturbing Facebook post” to police where DeSavio reportedly threatened a similar mass shooting, police said.

“Something big is about to hit the Vegas Strip. #October1stwasjustapreview! Let’s [expletive] [expletive] up before I literally #blowup Paradise NV,” the Facebook post reportedly said, according to police. The Las Vegas Strip is in the unincorporated community of Paradise, Nevada.

DeSavio faces charges of stalking, making a false threat regarding an act of terrorism, aggravated stalking and violating a temporary protection order for the threats made Tuesday, records show.

He refused to be taken from the Clark County Detention Center to the Regional Justice Center on Wednesday for his initial appearance. A judge did not set bail and rescheduled his court appearance for June 20.

It is what it is. Could have been Edmonton Toronto.

The Stanley Cup Finals national broadcast ratings down 43% this year from last year. It was the least viewed Stanley Cup Finals since 2007.

Nope. They would have to learn how to forecheck first. Vegas and Florida have that in their game with Vegas being one of the best in the league at it since they entered.
