It wasn't a penalty for time wasting; referee Raynal awarded a scrum not a penalty to ABs; All Blacks won that scrum and went on to score a try.

The idiot Australian Foley had been told to get on with it three time by the ref - and was being yelled at by his team-mates to kick but continued to stall for time.
I had accepted that this was to be an AB loss at this point, fell about laughing at the stupidity of Foley and what eventually resulted.

More seriously, that grub Darcy Swain at it again, to quote the Australian vernacular an utter dog act in his effort on Quinn Tupaea's leg - QT now estimated to be out for up to 9mths - scans today, hopefully less than that but 2022 will be over for him - at worst it wouldn't leave time to get playing time for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Swain a penalty magnet and a liability to the team, not long back from his headbutt ban and not the kind of moron that Rennie should be persisting with as he's a game-loser.

He did. Everyone does that. It's part of the game, and the ref needs to officiate that when it happens. The goddamned ref blew the whistle while he was kicking the ball.

And speaking of whistle, how many times did the ref blow it last night? trigger happy French fuck wit.

French refs . . . NZ has its history with Romaine Poite in the third Lions test 2017 when he changed his decision in the final minute resulting in a drawn series, then admitted he was wrong. Result remains.

But. Foley had his first warning from the referee for time wasting in the eighth minute.

Other players obviously aware of the situation; coaches/players research the referee at this level.

In the week leading up to this match, Australian media reported that northern hemisphere rugby had been moving against time wasting during the last season, to the point that the URC (United Rugby Championship - Ireland, Scotland, Italy, South Africa and Wales) were displaying shot clocks on ground screens, penalising for non-compliance. Referee in Sharks v Stormers January 2022 made a similar decision to last night, Sharks too slow taking the penalty kick and ref awarded a scrum to Stormers. It happens; in that match, resulted in a 22-22 draw.

It was also mentioned in the same article that Raynal, like all French referees, is pedantic.

So it should not have come as a surprise.

    Three warnings not enough?

Foley was mid kick when he blew the whistle.

Was at the pub with an Aussie mate and we were joking about how Foley had apparently lost his hearing. The ref had to blow the whistle just to be sure he was okay.

It was a player welfare issue, not a misjudgement.

That was shocking. He should be banned for the same time that Tupaea takes to come back. No need for that in the game. This is the mans livelihood.

Tupaea now estimated return 2023, will miss remaining RC and the end of year UK tour

Australian lock Darcy Swain cited for 'dog act' as Quinn Tupaea faces three months on sidelines
    16 Sep, 2022 12:00 PM

All Blacks coach Ian Foster confirmed on Friday that Tupaea will be sidelined for at least three months due to a ruptured medial cruciate ligament in his left knee, meaning he will miss the remainder of the season. Foster said Tupaea also suffered a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament, but wasn't sure if the midfielder would require surgery.

Swain was cited for the act of foul play and will face a judicial hearing, Foster added.

Sanzaar later issued a statement saying the citing comissionner deemed the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

"Swain is alleged to have contravened Law 9.11: Players must not do anything that is reckless and dangerous to others," the statement said.

The case will be considered by the foul play review committee on Monday.

    That makes absolutely no difference.

The referee made the correct decision after three warnings.

The player should be the one taking the flak from the ungracious convict losers.

Gregor Paul: Why time-wasting call in All Blacks-Wallabies is good for world rugby

In one of the most dramatic finishes test rugby has witnessed, French referee Mathieu Raynal awarded a match-turning infringement for Bernard Foley taking too long to kick the ball from a penalty.

For years, the All Blacks were haunted not just by the random and unjustifiable refereeing event in the final minute of the third test of the 2017 series against the British and Irish Lions, but also by the subsequent refusal of World Rugby to publicly address it.

As is now embedded in folklore, French referee Romain Poite awarded the All Blacks a penalty – highly kickable – with the scores locked at 15-all, only to change his mind and call a scrum instead.

It denied the All Blacks their chance to win the series, but what came to hurt more was that World Rugby referee boss Alain Rolland is believed to have reviewed the game a few days later and determined that it was "the wrong decision but right result".

The whole business was bonkers and no one imagined there would ever again be a moment of controversy quite like it.
But here were are now, trying to make sense of the decision made by Mathieu Raynal in the last minute of the first Bledisloe Cup test of 2022.

He became the first referee in living history to discipline a team for time wasting, when in the final minute, with Australia three points ahead, he effectively reversed the penalty he had awarded the Wallabies when he determined Bernard Foley had taken too long to boot the ball into touch.

And now the rugby world is split as to whether it was justifiable or another case of a referee melting down at a horribly inconvenient time of a huge test match.

The conclusion to draw is perhaps that it was "the right decision but the wrong result", or at least the wrong time to have intervened in such a dramatic and game-changing way.

Time wasting has become the scourge of international rugby. Foley's 39-second charade was a clear-cut case – and whether the clock had been stopped or not, his intent was to deliberately cheat the All Blacks out of legitimate playing time to rescue the test.

Utter rubbish. An infringement is an infringement, and the time on the clock is irrelevant.

Clive Thomas once blew the final whistle just as Zico headed the ball in a World Cup match in 1974, the ball crossed the line just after but he refused to give the goal as it was after the whistle.

He was pilloried for it, but what's the fucking point in having a clock otherwise?

Of course nowadays referees tend to wait until what they deem full time and then blow the whistle at the the next change of possession or when the ball goes out of play, but that is open to abuse and has been interpreted very liberally in the past (think Fergie Time).

    1. Good for him and I hope other referees do it. At least in football the referee can add time to the clock.
    2. He didn't determine the outcome of the game, the player stupid enough to ignore three warnings, not to mention warnings from his teammates, influenced, did not determine, the outcome of the game.

You should be blaming the idiot that ignored the ref.

Oh FFS did you pay ANY attention to what was going on? Did you even watch the fucking game?

For the last time, Yes, and then the ref blew the whistle while he was in the process of kicking it.

Los Pumas closed the gap to two points in the second half, but the Springboks proved too strong in final ten minutes coming out victorious 36-20.

First match of the weekend, teams announced, six changes for ABs (five due to injury, plus Ardie Savea back from parental leave), three for Wallabies.
Wallaby Darcy Swain received a six week ban for his attack on Quinn Tupaea's knee last week.

The Wallabies haven’t won in 22 straight games at Eden Park since 1986. After last Thursday's close game, a real chance for them on Saturday.
South Africa still my pick to win the tournament, expect a big win for them in Durban over Argentina 11.05pm Saturday night Thai time. They'll know the outcome of the NZ-Oz match and exactly what's required in terms of points differential if that is the decider.

Methinks the pub is going to be swamped with our convict brethren tomorrow. And there's no footy on.

Might have a night on the town for a change.
