AFL Superstar, Dustin Martin’s father Shane Martin dies in New Zealand

Dustin Martin’s father Shane Martin dies in New Zealand, Richmond confirms

AFL: A familiar face got in on the action with Tigers star Dustin Martin as Richmond closed in on Port Adelaide on Saturday.

Shane Martin, the father of AFL superstar Dustin Martin, has passed away in New Zealand.
Richmond confirmed his death in a statement released on Saturday morning.
“The club extends its heartfelt sympathy to Dustin, his brothers Bronson and Tyson and the entire Martin family,” the statement read.
The circumstances of his death are not yet known.

    Shane Martin was
deported to New Zealand in 2016 under Australia’s controversial Immigration Act.
He had previously lived in Australia for more than 25 years and had made several attempts to return to be with his son in recent years.

‘I love my dad and he’s made me the man I am today.’
Shane was forced to watch on from afar as his son scorched the Gabba last October, powering the Tigers to a third premiership in four years.
The Brownlow medallist has been vocal about his desire to reunite with his father and win another flag with Shane in the crowd.

“I love my dad and he’s made me the man I am today. I’ve got full belief he’ll back here to watch us win another flag.
“That’s my dream to be able to have the old man up there (in the grandstand) with the rest of my family and watch the Tiges win another flag.”
As Shane Martin watched on from New Zealand, he told reporters how much he would have loved to be there.
“We spoke to him (Dustin) after the game but as usual it’s all noisy, you can’t hear stuff, but you could hear how excited he was,” Shane
    Martin told the NZ Herald.
“It’s pretty hard to see it on TV when I should be there, really, but that’s another story.
“It’s still a proud moment but I would have loved to be there, but yeah, you know, it is what it is, don’t want to take the moment away from it.”
This is a developing story. More to come.

Mr Martin, a former outlaw motorcycle gang member, had been residing in New Zealand since 2016, after being deported from Australia in 2016 on the grounds of bad character.
“The club extends its heartfelt sympathy to Dustin, his brothers Bronson and Tyson and the entire Martin family,” the club said in a statement.

Dusty Martin's father, an ex-bikie boss, fails in bid to re-enter Australia

“We ask the media to respect Dustin and the Martin family’s privacy in this extremely difficult time.”
NZ Police have confirmed, according to a report in the NZ Herald, that they attended a property on Friday afternoon on the street which Martin lived, where a man was located deceased.
There did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances, police said.
A Richmond spokesperson said the club was giving Martin their full support, and as much time as he needs.

Martin visited his father in April, having not seen him for more than 12 months at that stage, due to the impact of COVID-19.
“It’s been a massive challenge, but it is what it is,” Martin said on Fox Footy during an interview with AFL great Nick Riewoldt earlier this year.
“I love my dad and he’s made me the man I am today. I’ve got full belief he’ll back here to watch us win another flag.”

Mr Martin, a former Rebels bikie boss, attempted to return to Australia in early 2020 but was deported after flying into Sydney Airport and claiming he had Aboriginal heritage.

Since his deportation, Martin had launched a number of legal bids to return to Australia.
Mr Martin’s wife Adriana and three adult children all live in Australia. Mr Martin moved to Australia at the age of 20 and lived in the country until the age of 49 when his visa was cancelled by then immigration minister Peter Dutton.
Dustin Martin has been recuperating from a serious injury which ended his season in round 18 when he suffered a lacerated kidney against the Brisbane Lions on the Gold Coast.
The Brownlow medallist was forced to spend nine days in hospital in Queensland and ended up losing approximately 15 kilograms.
The severity of the injury will end up precluding Martin from contact training for at least six months, with the club not planning on reintroducing the superstar to that part of the program until mid-January.

But given the tragedy he is now dealing with, it remains to be seen when Martin will be ready to return to Punt Road.
