‘Nobody cares.’ Beijing shrugs off Canberra’s 'diplomatic boycott'

Five Eyes put on silly show by blindly following US

... Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a press conference on Wednesday that China did not invite any Australian official to the Games and no one cares whether they come or not....

    Except the chinkies obviously.

There is another side too. Nobody really cares over here. I mean, who was going before who is not going now? Nobody actually knows, or cares. Who is going now? Who knows, who cares.

I suppose the good side is that the more senior type nobheads are pretty used to and jaded by these lavish junkets, they don't really give a toss- but junior nobheads probably do and they are probably looking forward to it. Olympics are known to be pretty lavish junkets. Or maybe scomo should just tell them all to stay home- like who cares, except maybe them.

And the athletes, whoever they might be, are going just the same. A lot of international bonking goes on in these games I am informed. It is likely that Australia might win a sun bronzed medal in the bonking, but doubt we will get any on on the piste (just the pissed).

Yeah, standard chinky SOP. Try and change the narrative.

However, the narrative is still "XXXXXXXX boycott blah blah blah CHINKYSTAN HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES".

I see France are being pussies, probably the IOC have threatened them, but the squareheads are thinking about an EU two-fingered salute.

On the positive side, this has raised one slight point of interest in these games which I never had before. How might the Chinese hosts respond to these pinpricks, if at all?

Will they play the 'above it all, noblesse oblige' tack- as if nothing really happened (and lets face it, nothing really did).

Or will they play a bit of snide- and the chinks are pretty good at that. For example, might the high flying squakus contingent find themselves all lobbed together at the same table(s), with a partially obscured view of the 'great chinese fan dance extravaganza' (or whatever) in the back corner of the auditorium, while the enlightened gentlemen of the Solomon Islands and Kiribati- who have switched diplorecognition from ROC to PRC in the last year- find themselves seated at the front row centre tables previously reserved for the yanks?

That might be interesting to see, anyway. Let the games begin!

^ Well in fairness to France, they are a real Medal contender.

    1. Don't winter holidays usually involve going somewhere nice and sunny. ie, to escape the fookin' winter.

    2. Pretty sure the Harbin Ice Festival is known to most people in the world looking to freeze one's nads off.

I have no plans whatsoever to watch anything from the winter olympics.

I shall boycott China as I boycotted Japans summer olympics.

Non event for me, but I can understand if others want to watch some 2am curling .

    They won gold here.

Which just may be the best Olympic (and most Australian) gold medal ever.

Tell that to those who hit European/North American winter sports venues Jan to Mar every year.

    Yea . . . nah.

    Not.

Tourists go to China for the cultural and ancestral aspect, maybe some amazing geography . . . that's about it. China makes it too difficult to enter as a tourist, doesn't have the infrastructure to support it and lacks the safety background.

Why not? Oh, you mean the decades of the Cultural revolution, the Great Leap Forward or generally trying not to have more than 100 million people die, many due to starvation?

Korea, Japan . . . winter holidays took decades to become well known enough, safe enough, cosmopolitan enough to entice some foreigners.

Outside of the Five Eyes I don't foresee many other countries jumping on board with this 'boycott'. I see the boycott as America flexing it's muscle in an effort to re-establish the influence which was lost during the Trump presidency. The recent 'Council for Democracy' where the president invited about 120 countries to attend is another attempt to re-establish the influence that may have waned. I believe it has probably more than 'waned' but likely dissappeared.

I'm interested in seeing what form the Chinese retaliation takes. I guess the more countries on board with the boycott the less likely there will be any real retaliations.

That being said I think the boycott is probably not a bad idea.

I'll be watching the games for sure as Canada is competitness in most events. I'll definitely be giving curling a pass though.

Sorry, russ: I think you're a cool little hippy dude in canada.

But, Trump is the one — in the west — who said it's time to take on china which engages in unfair trade practices, illegally copies tech and is a totalitariainistic country.

Before, Trump: the e.u., dubya and obama were pro-china.

Once Trump stood up to china — they hit us with the "wuhan virus".

    Could you elaborate on this:

    Would you disagree?

Do you think the EU, Dubya or Obama did so before Trump?

Yet another slightly clunky sammy interaction.

    "Cheers"

    "Cheers"

    Who does that?
